Plantation shutters

Every window in my house has plantation shutters. They look good and i have no intention of ripping them out.

However, if I were starting from scratch, I'd definitely go for drapes or pelmets -warmer, and with more color.

Any ideas (or pictures) on how to add dressing to plantation shutters?

I have seen drapery panels on either side of some shuttered windows. We have the plantation shutters in the diningroom only which faces the street. Most of my neighbors have the same. Experiment and see if something like that would work for you. Some of the drapery hardware companies make a small rod in various materials and sizes that could go on either side. That might also work.

I have plantation shutters throughout my home too and am very happy with them. At some point in time, I may enhance them with drapes in a couple of rooms. In the model homes there were lots of examples of shutters with short (about 1 foot long) decorative rods with a single panel on both sides....they weren't functional curtains, but they added color...like described above.

Yes, Penney's installed them and it's included in the price. There was only a choice of real wood or composite. Then you could pick your color (they had many colors including stained) You also pick your louver size. They are made my Norman Shutters. Scroll through their website and there are some beautiful pictures. I wonder if different Penney's use different brands???? I only did the front of my house but that included french doors and that sometimes raises the price a bit. So with my 40% off sale, my total for 14 windows and 2 french doors was $6100 and then I got another 10% off for doing the whole house with them. (wood blinds on the back) So that brought it down to $5490 The French doors have a cutout for the lever that I think looks pretty cool. Here is a link that might be useful: Norman Shutters

Oh, Patricia! YOU hate something (plantation shutters) so much that you cannot imagine why they are still popular. I suppose it is because YOUR taste is not everyone's taste, and that is a good thing. I know you have strong feelings about 4000K lighting, shutters, sage green with brick, and several other choices, and I know you are a "Pro." When you say "I hate" someone's choices, it sounds so demeaning (like "I hate" the name you chose for your child). I often agree with your constructive criticism, but find some of the comments potentially hurtful. By the way, we have beautiful plantation shutters and I love them, but I know they are not appropriate for all homes and also know that they are not everyone's choice. To each their own. As for the OP's question, I believe that the interior and exterior shutters would never be visible from the same vantage point, so I see no reason not to have them if that is what works for her.

IMO nice solar shades for hest and UV control allow you to keep the view . where i live we also get a great view of city lights so I never close my drapes but if nightime privacy is a big deal then just use the solar shades all day and close the drapes at night . I have never liked plantation shutters and was removing them a lot in Calgary 20 yrs ago so I am always surprised how many US posters are still using them. They block view are a PITA to keep dusted and so heavy looking too. BTW yes in the South where there were actual plantations and aslo a long time ago there are so many great ways to get window coverings now

How much do you use these rooms? I also have dining room with a window on the north wall, but the room is rarely used. When it is used, it is usually at night, or if during the day, I open the blinds. However, DH and I spend a lot of time in the living room - I would not like to be cutting back the light in a north facing room frequently occupied unless it's used for watching TV. I think plantation shutters look strange open as shown in your second picture unless you're able to fold them all the way back against the wall. If you think you'll want to have them open all day, every day then I would consider other window treatments.

You could put up a cloth valance to dress them up and add warmth. Could be a simple rod pocket with a standard rod. Or a decorative wood rod.
