I had a great time celebrating my 50th birthday in Vegas!

We had a free room at Paris, but DH paid to upgrade to a Calais suite on the 29th floor. The room was big and beautiful, with a living room area, dining table, wet bar with fridge, king bed, and two bathrooms, one with a jetted tub. Also a straight-on view of the fountains across the street at Bellagio.

On Wednesday, my birthday, I slept late, then ordered breakfast from room service. We walked up the strip to check out the new Palazzo hotel and walked around in Wynn so I could take some photos. Then we played slots at Bally's (or was it Harrah's?) for a little while. We sat by the pool at our hotel for a couple hours, then got ready for dinner at Olives in the Bellagio. Lots of good food! I couldn't eat more than half of my squash-filled pasta. After dinner, we went to Bally's and played slots and listened to the band at Indigo Lounge.

Thursday and Friday we mostly walked around different casinos and played slots. About two hours before we had to go to the airport on Friday, we made our way back to Paris so my husband could play out the $150 ticket he had won that morning playing slots. He played for nearly two hours on a penny slot machine (playing the maximum bet of $1.80 each spin), until he had only $1.20 left to play. Then he hit a big win of $637!!! He played that up to over $900, then back down to about $850 before cashing out. We left for the airport ten minutes later. What a way to end the trip!

Wow! Great Pictures, thanks! I haven't been to Vegas in years. So many new places.

To come home a "winner" is a miracle! LOL!

That looks like fun. I've never been to LV. Some day! I love the conservatory pictures. That tree was cool.

With the crazy cold weather we've had this spring more often than not (its cold rain again today), I doubt the evening primrose have come into bloom yet Edna. The Brassicaceae would be up in bloom well before the Onagraceae on the Mojave. The two most common yellow species around here are O. primiveris and C. californica. The californica could be called weedy looking, but not the primiveris. BTW, the main reason I used to pay attention to this group of plants had nothing to do with Lepidoptera. When I lived in St. George, Utah I was a member of the Utah Dept of Ag team that did the spring Gopherus agassizii counts. The desert tortoise in that area fairly reliably timed their emergence from their winter burrows in the spring to the blooming of two specific species of sand primroses that grew in that area. They rely on the blooms for a substantial feast at that time of year with the grasses just starting to come up. Anyway, that was the best time to get fairly accurate counts of an areas total DT population. I also did raptor and lepidopteran studies for several years for the UDA for a new wildlife preserve they were designating in that area mainly to protect critical habitat for DT's, Golden Eagles and two particular species of Lepidoptera. maire, yes, that's my helicopter. Ha. We were so high in the mountains one day that we looked DOWN and saw a helicopter flying below us. That was weird. Anyway, we drove most days, but we took the train to the top of Jungfrau (where I'm doing my Maria imitation above) from Interlaken, and we took the train/cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Murren. Anything I'd do differently... not too much, I think! I'd stay a couple more days in Zurich. When we arrived at our hotel there was a huge flea market across the street. Heaven! I could have stayed there for hours, but we had only one full day so we had to scurry and do other things. Also, I wasn't thrilled with our hotel in Interlaken considering how expensive it was. It was beautiful but the staff was really indifferent -- after being at the Four Seasons, where they practically fell over themselves to take care of us, it was a real change. The only other issue I had was with the altitude at Jungfrau. We had to cut our visit shorter than planned because I was all loopy. I was okay outside but there are all these tunnels leading to the various areas, and I felt very lightheaded in those interior areas, even in the restaurant. Finally I just had to sit down and zone out. We wanted to go in the ice palace but I just couldn't function. One of my sons had a headache but the rest of the family was fine. Weird how it affects everyone differently. I don't know what, if anything, I could have done to avoid it? It probably didn't help that I had had about 3 hours of sleep the night before because of the heat and the street noise. Next time, I want to go with just DH (love my kids, but...) and stay in Murren for several days as part of our trip. Jean, we were on a 5:30 flight from Zurich to Boston. THe heat on those two days was pretty bad especially when we drove from Geneva to Interlaken with a stop in Bern. We were there at midday and we were just melting, walking around, but we were determined to see some of the city and the Bear Park. The bigger and fancier the hotel and the closer to the strip the higher the cost...so if your budget will accommodate that then just pick and choose the one that suits your fancy. We have stayed at several along the strip...any of them will please you..that's there business;;;we have stayed at Caesars Palace, NY, NY. Bellagio and a few others but there are some that are not one the strip that are just as nice and since you have a car you don't need to be on the strip...there is plenty of transportation around town...from one hotel to the others; I think the one that we had the most fun at was the NY, NY..but we are not the kind of people that have to have the plushest of the plush... Sounds like a fun trip...Enjoy Las Vegas...its fun just don't get in a rush cause there is a lot to do and see there. This post was edited by ruthieg__tx on Sun, Jun 15, 14 at 11:17

High points for me on the Strip were touring the Bellagio gardens and just the casino and stores themselves. Also really liked going to Ceasars Palace, there is a neat shopping/galleria in there too. New York is ok, and I was pretty disappointed in Paris, but I definitely second the people watching. I liked just going in to the different casinos to see what they were all about-the Cosmopolitan is very pretty-I liked the bling. Hoover Dam in really neat-I'm a science geek but even if you're not it's a pretty spectacular site. Freemont Street is an experience in itself, if you can catch a bus over to there it's worth it. I was slightly disappointed by the fountains show at the Bellagio-it went on for a couple of songs, then stopped, then repeated. It's pretty cool tho, definitely worth checking out. I'd recommend getting a spot along the street early, along the fence line since it gets really crowded really fast. Oh, if you've never been to Las Vegas, and you go walking past the shops in the casinos, be aware that the buskers are very aggressive. I've had them walk right up to me and want to start applying creams to me and whatever else it is they're selling without me even saying anything. Don't make eye contact and do not show any interest in the items unless you like being held hostage to their hard sales techinques. Remember, NOTHING is free in Vegas!

That looks absolutely wonderful!! What a great birthday! Congrats to your hubby too on his win.

I'm not much of a gambler, but I love Las Vegas. DD said that DH and I should take her there for her 21st birthday (a couple years away) and I'm starting to think that might be a fun idea.

omgoodness! i thought only downtown had penny slots anymore! next time you go, be sure to get off the strip...there are so many neat things within the area...

I love it there. It looks like you had a great time. What a great room too. Much more elegant than I've ever stayed in. But, I don't spend much time in the room when there. Long enough for 5-6 hours sleep and a shower.

We did have a really good time. It was nice winning that big jackpot at the end, but we lost at least that much while we were there, so we didn't really come home "winners." But we don't gamble more than we can afford to lose, of course. DH considers it entertainment.

I loved visiting the conservatory! This is the first time I've been there in the spring, so I took tons of photos. I posted less than half of them. The potting shed with the live butterflies in it was awesome!

We didn't wander too far on this trip. We made it over to Rio, but decided not to bother with downtown. A few years ago we took a drive out to Red Rock Canyon, which was interesting. It seems like no matter how long we're there, we never have enough time to do all the things I want to do. But DH doesn't want to go for more than 3 or 4 days. I could spend two weeks there and not get bored. Of course, I'd put on about 20 pounds...

I was amazed at the number of penny slots! Years ago you were lucky to find half a dozen. Now they're everywhere! Literally dozens and dozens in every casino!

I'm already planning our next trip! We may go in November, for our 15th anniversary. (We got married in Vegas!) no, not by Elvis.

Oh I love Vegas..not for the gambling but for the sights. Wasn't the Bellagio something? We spent more time there than anywhere last time we went. We didn't stay there but sure visited it alot. I love those fountains...could watch them all night! Beautiful place.
