I had a great time celebrating my 50th birthday in Vegas!

We had a free room at Paris, but DH paid to upgrade to a Calais suite on the 29th floor. The room was big and beautiful, with a living room area, dining table, wet bar with fridge, king bed, and two bathrooms, one with a jetted tub. Also a straight-on view of the fountains across the street at Bellagio.

On Wednesday, my birthday, I slept late, then ordered breakfast from room service. We walked up the strip to check out the new Palazzo hotel and walked around in Wynn so I could take some photos. Then we played slots at Bally's (or was it Harrah's?) for a little while. We sat by the pool at our hotel for a couple hours, then got ready for dinner at Olives in the Bellagio. Lots of good food! I couldn't eat more than half of my squash-filled pasta. After dinner, we went to Bally's and played slots and listened to the band at Indigo Lounge.

Thursday and Friday we mostly walked around different casinos and played slots. About two hours before we had to go to the airport on Friday, we made our way back to Paris so my husband could play out the $150 ticket he had won that morning playing slots. He played for nearly two hours on a penny slot machine (playing the maximum bet of $1.80 each spin), until he had only $1.20 left to play. Then he hit a big win of $637!!! He played that up to over $900, then back down to about $850 before cashing out. We left for the airport ten minutes later. What a way to end the trip!

Wow! Great Pictures, thanks! I haven't been to Vegas in years. So many new places.

To come home a "winner" is a miracle! LOL!

That looks like fun. I've never been to LV. Some day! I love the conservatory pictures. That tree was cool.

It is one of the Ferocactus. Fresh seeds are fine to sow, and they also usually last a bit. Sowing now is fine, just remember that most cactus seedlings can't stand drought. Also, if they turn red, decrease the amount of light. Feros grow quite easily from seed and grow fast at first. You can expect a dime sized plant the first year, maybe a little more if conditions allow. For a species name, the parent plant looks like F. cylindraceus, especially if the flowers were yellow. Could also maybe be something like an old hystrix. When you look for Fero pics for ID, the color of the spine and the amount of hook to the tip of the central spine are reliable clues. Many Feros have a decided hook to the central (much more than your photo shows), and many (most?) have spines that start out red. Also, just about all Feros have that transverse ridge on the central spine (ridges going the width of the spine). Missing from a few with the twisted spines usually.

Scott, Don't worry about. I actually got a good laugh out of it. The funny thing is that even the perception of other types of cyclists rubs against fellow enthusiasts. If we're sport biking as a group, at a meeting place some will laugh about how the RUB's (rich urban bikers) go slow and aren't real riders because they absolutely pasted them to the road on some vicious passes. Riding with the RUB crowd they'll dog the Organ Donors (sportbike riders) just as equally. In dirtbiking the Hare Scramblers will dog the Motocrossers because of their lack of endurance at race pace with statements like a 5 lap race isn't even enough time to get your heart rate up and the Motocrossers will retaliate with things like those boys don't even know how to jump. I race and ride all types of bikes and events and love every one of them. Later when going over the results I'll laugh at myself and with them about how guys like me make the front half of the class possible. The truth is that if you put in your best effort, without riding over your head, your a winner for competing. It's much more fun to dice in the middle or rear of the pack than to sit in the bleachers with the spectators and watch another man take your position. See ya, Kelly

Kenova, W. VA was where my sister was born but also was raised in Ky. Were you born near there, it is close to Huntington. I have a brother still living in the Tri State area, nice to know where your roots are. Good pictures you posted.

High points for me on the Strip were touring the Bellagio gardens and just the casino and stores themselves. Also really liked going to Ceasars Palace, there is a neat shopping/galleria in there too. New York is ok, and I was pretty disappointed in Paris, but I definitely second the people watching. I liked just going in to the different casinos to see what they were all about-the Cosmopolitan is very pretty-I liked the bling. Hoover Dam in really neat-I'm a science geek but even if you're not it's a pretty spectacular site. Freemont Street is an experience in itself, if you can catch a bus over to there it's worth it. I was slightly disappointed by the fountains show at the Bellagio-it went on for a couple of songs, then stopped, then repeated. It's pretty cool tho, definitely worth checking out. I'd recommend getting a spot along the street early, along the fence line since it gets really crowded really fast. Oh, if you've never been to Las Vegas, and you go walking past the shops in the casinos, be aware that the buskers are very aggressive. I've had them walk right up to me and want to start applying creams to me and whatever else it is they're selling without me even saying anything. Don't make eye contact and do not show any interest in the items unless you like being held hostage to their hard sales techinques. Remember, NOTHING is free in Vegas!

That looks absolutely wonderful!! What a great birthday! Congrats to your hubby too on his win.

I'm not much of a gambler, but I love Las Vegas. DD said that DH and I should take her there for her 21st birthday (a couple years away) and I'm starting to think that might be a fun idea.

omgoodness! i thought only downtown had penny slots anymore! next time you go, be sure to get off the strip...there are so many neat things within the area...

I love it there. It looks like you had a great time. What a great room too. Much more elegant than I've ever stayed in. But, I don't spend much time in the room when there. Long enough for 5-6 hours sleep and a shower.

We did have a really good time. It was nice winning that big jackpot at the end, but we lost at least that much while we were there, so we didn't really come home "winners." But we don't gamble more than we can afford to lose, of course. DH considers it entertainment.

I loved visiting the conservatory! This is the first time I've been there in the spring, so I took tons of photos. I posted less than half of them. The potting shed with the live butterflies in it was awesome!

We didn't wander too far on this trip. We made it over to Rio, but decided not to bother with downtown. A few years ago we took a drive out to Red Rock Canyon, which was interesting. It seems like no matter how long we're there, we never have enough time to do all the things I want to do. But DH doesn't want to go for more than 3 or 4 days. I could spend two weeks there and not get bored. Of course, I'd put on about 20 pounds...

I was amazed at the number of penny slots! Years ago you were lucky to find half a dozen. Now they're everywhere! Literally dozens and dozens in every casino!

I'm already planning our next trip! We may go in November, for our 15th anniversary. (We got married in Vegas!) no, not by Elvis.

Oh I love Vegas..not for the gambling but for the sights. Wasn't the Bellagio something? We spent more time there than anywhere last time we went. We didn't stay there but sure visited it alot. I love those fountains...could watch them all night! Beautiful place.
