Ghirardelli...how do you pronounce it/do you like it?

No matter what Jeff gives me on a birthday day / mother's day ...whatever. He always includes Ghirardelli chocolates. (he must like them)

The are chocolate so they are good. But certainly not my favorites. I don't care for the bitterness of dark chocolates...

Now I love Dove's or Russel Stover's

But I guess it's "don't look a gift horse in the mouth.." lol..pass me another Ghirardelli....

Oh and what is the correct way to pronounce it.

Is it just like it looks ?

Can you write it like it should sound?

Hi Laura, I wouldn't worry about this much (I don't know of any list anywhere either). Do the best you can learning the names & I wouldn't worry about their pronunciation. Speaking personally (& I've belonged to several plant societies) among others of us, there are often variations in pronunciation. Like me, many times it's cause one's only SEEN or READ the word, never heard it SPOKEN. For myself, if someone is using the Latin name (correctly) I almost don't care how they pronounce the word(s). With time & frequent use you'll get to learn what the more commonly heard pronunciations are & get used to them.

Transcriptions of foreign/non-English names into English may be the same in writing, but the original names may very well be different names and therefore pronounced differently. Even the same written names in the old foreign/non-English country may be pronounced differently depending on local dialect, racial identity cultural identity, etc. After immigration to a new country with a different language, the spelling of the transcribed name (on legal documents and elsewhere) may not change, but the pronunciation may be made simpler for use of the name in the new country, which may mean simpler for use with only a dozen contact persons in the new country, i.e. the new pronunciation chosen for the name may be different in a different suburb, for example. It can thus be a complicated matter with even more complicating issues than in the above, and the most reliable guide for pronunciation (and spelling) is likely the bearer of the name himself/herself, as suggested earlier. So, if Jean Iseli pronounces his (business) name EYES-lee then you better pronounce it that way. But his Swiss father may consider that pronunciation a mispronunciation of his (the father's) name and may feel disrespected if you address him that way. So, you address the father as he (the father) pronounces his own name. Note that Switzerland has 4 official languages. FWIW, I know a little about the issue, because I am an immigrant myself from a foreign/non-English-speaking country, and on top of that, I was in an ethnic minority of a very diverse old country :-)

Yup, Denise has it exactly how I meant it! Denise -- Remember Jeff H (of course)? I learned & said Kalan choe like you did, he said Kalanko ee, we never corrected each other & always knew what the other meant. Eventually I switched over as the Calif folks said it more his way & my older NY C&S colleagues say it w/ the CH. Huernias are fun (fellow Asclepiads & thereby cousins to Hoyas), can come out as Hernia (you know, like a man's ailment)? Hey Kelly, No, sorry, the Hoya fest was a great one-time deal hosted by Norma (aka Dufflebag). I had turned her on to Hoyas & she started collecting them like mad -- & subsequently invited a bunch of us out, mostly folks who don't post here anymore & we all provided abt 10 cuttings to swap w/ each other. Participants who are rarely here anymore, Sylvia Marie (who I believe I recently saw at our Gallery nearby, a really nice Patricia, a Robyn (later banned I think) & OkieDeb, who may still post at some of the other Hoya places & became close w/ Norma, & of course I met Cena (she of the current & spectacular outdoor hanging Orchids & Hoyas), who also lives in San Diego as did Jeff; we had a blast!!! Norma also invited both Michael Kartuz & Dale Kloppenburg to the event. I bought a small Incurvula from Kartuz which never did anything & finally died last winter. I still have Kloppenberg's Pubicalyx Fresno, a big pot of which he'd given Norma who shared some w/ me, hasn't bloomed yet. BTW, I shared around a Hoya Crassipes (orig. from Norma) which I adored & recently lost, if anyone here, Denise Oojenn, I think, maybe even Cena still have Crassipes, I'm eager & crazed even to get some back, I just LOVED it, even without blooming yet. Pls. let me know if anyone has it or knows of it, I've never seen it elsewhere or known anyone else to have it. I believe Norma recently said she no longer collects Hoyas (her real & extraordinary expertize is in Crassulas, hence her prior handle 'Crassulady' & Sansvierias, w/ which she helped me greatly in researching for a Sans. talk & I gave at my C&S Society abt 2 yrs. ago. Norma still posts at C&S & at Sans. under the handle Dufflebag. Denise -- I'd sure love to see your talk -- November did you say? You're in Omaha, I have kin in Lincoln & have never been there ... hum ... we'll have to talk in future.

Around here, it is laun-dro-mat or laun-dra-mat. This is one word that gets a lot of colloquial spin on it. When I first arrived in this location in 1960, I rented a room at a rooming house and the Lady manager asked me where would I like to get my 'meil'. I looked at her quizically because I thought she was referring to food. She wasn't; She was referring to the stuff delivered by the post office. Her German pronounciation was foriegn to my ears. As time went by, that was not the only word that was a stranger to me. For example, a bubbler is a 'drinking fountain'; And then the phrase, make out the light.

If you try a better quality dark chocolate, you might like it. It is a fancy name but not a fancy chocolate.

That's how Jeff says it...so that's how I've been saying it...but wondering if it was right.

We prounounce it gear-ah-deli here in SF.
Ghirardelli Square is a touristy spot at Fisherman's Wharf.
Their chocolate is not one of my favorites.

I don't like dark chocolate,either. I once drank dark chocolate cocoa,it tasted rancid!

LOL - so ironic you would ask this question because I was just asking someone about it yesterday. My cousing from SF pronounes it jer-er-delly, but I heard someone on one of the cooking shows pronounce is gear-er-delly. I like it best at no more than 60% dark.

GEAR ar DELLY is the way we say it here in California. And in San Francisco, you can buy the chocolates at their location in the wharf area.

I like their filled squares, raspberry and mint are my favorites. DS bought me some for Mom's Day. I am not wild about really dark chocolate ones, too bitter. But that is DH's favorite so I give him those squares.

I always pronouced it Gear-ahh-deli (guess I didn't see or hear that middle "r")

It may not be Godiva, but I know a lot of bakers prefer to use the Ghirardelli chips instead of Hersey's or Nestle's for their cookies and baking.

I love the Ghirardelli Carmel squares...not a fan of dark chocolate either.I got a box of Godiva Chocolates for Mothers Day...I'm in CHOCOLATE HEAVEN!!

I second or third the Bay Area pronunciation, silent 'r' in the middle. I don't think we really put an emphasis on one syllable, just roll it together.
I love the peppermint bark and the chocolate mint. Mmmmmmmm

Another that pronounces it like lindakathy. I was just in SF at the wharf over the weekend. We didn't go in the store though. Trying to lose a little weight. The weather was beautiful!

I've always heard it pronounced Gear-Ah-Deli no matter where I've been in CA. Love, love, love dark chocolate. I'll take whatever anyone else doesn't want. :-)

I like it alot for baking. Used to be able to buy it at Trader Joe's but the one I go to now doesn't sell it anymore(so not sure if that's a local thing or what). I bought the white, dark and milk in chunks.
Gear ah deli is how I say it too.
and I love dark chocolate..I prefer it over milk anyday..
And I think Dove is yucky, I'd rather have a regular ol Hershey's bar of it.

My new chocolate passion is Dilettante. I am loving the dipped dried fruits. Makes me feel like I'm eating something extra good for me. LOL

And it isn't my favorite chocolate either.I also prefer the Dove.X DIL brought me a piece of some that her relatives brought from Norway for me to taste.It was delicious!

It is pronounced Gear-ar-delly.

I lived in the Bay Area for 30 years and when DH and I were dating we loved to go to the Ghirardelli ice cream store in Fisherman's Wharf. We'd get one of their hot fudge sundaes and split it. (They were huge!) We no longer live there, but I can still taste it. Yum!!!!
