Ghirardelli...how do you pronounce it/do you like it?

No matter what Jeff gives me on a birthday day / mother's day ...whatever. He always includes Ghirardelli chocolates. (he must like them)

The are chocolate so they are good. But certainly not my favorites. I don't care for the bitterness of dark chocolates...

Now I love Dove's or Russel Stover's

But I guess it's "don't look a gift horse in the mouth.." lol..pass me another Ghirardelli....

Oh and what is the correct way to pronounce it.

Is it just like it looks ?

Can you write it like it should sound?

Hi Laura, I wouldn't worry about this much (I don't know of any list anywhere either). Do the best you can learning the names & I wouldn't worry about their pronunciation. Speaking personally (& I've belonged to several plant societies) among others of us, there are often variations in pronunciation. Like me, many times it's cause one's only SEEN or READ the word, never heard it SPOKEN. For myself, if someone is using the Latin name (correctly) I almost don't care how they pronounce the word(s). With time & frequent use you'll get to learn what the more commonly heard pronunciations are & get used to them.

Around here, it is laun-dro-mat or laun-dra-mat. This is one word that gets a lot of colloquial spin on it. When I first arrived in this location in 1960, I rented a room at a rooming house and the Lady manager asked me where would I like to get my 'meil'. I looked at her quizically because I thought she was referring to food. She wasn't; She was referring to the stuff delivered by the post office. Her German pronounciation was foriegn to my ears. As time went by, that was not the only word that was a stranger to me. For example, a bubbler is a 'drinking fountain'; And then the phrase, make out the light.

Very interesting thread especially considering the mix of accents & regional variation we have in our family (FL, NC, & NY), so I did some research: From Dictionary.com: cab-i-net [kab-uh-nit] I think it really comes down to how fast you say the word--the faster you say it, the less you hear the 'i' & it becomes 2 syllables vs. 3. The slower you say it the more pronounced the 'i' becomes and you end up with all 3 syllables.) hu-man [hyoo-muhn or, often, yoo‐] I always hated when the 'h' is dropped. Had a highschool teacher for a year who dropped the 'h' & it made me nuts! I'm a fan of phonics, the 'h' is there for a reason-let's pronounce it. car-a-mel [kar-uh-muhl, -mel, kahr-muhl] Pronunciation always seemed regional to me like pee-can vs pe-cahn. But using the rules of phonics, I have to hedge on the side of car-a-mel. Mush, when writing or in training, it is written GSW. Thankfully Ive never had to say the words out loud. And we write DGBH for Death and Grievous Bodily Harm which is how we determine what our response option (ie use of force) will be and that perception of DGBH is different for me than it is for someone else. If we were calling over the radio or phone for an ambulance they might say Golf Sierra Whiskey. I know when some police agencies respond to a sudden death, the radio call is a Sierra Delta. My work has a TON of acronyms. Its a language of its own. (forgive me, my keyboard switched to french and I cant remember how to change it back, so no apostrophes.) ck_squared the kids now say all the time: What team are we versing. Thats how they say it, not who are we playing, but who are we versing.

If you try a better quality dark chocolate, you might like it. It is a fancy name but not a fancy chocolate.

That's how Jeff says it...so that's how I've been saying it...but wondering if it was right.

We prounounce it gear-ah-deli here in SF.
Ghirardelli Square is a touristy spot at Fisherman's Wharf.
Their chocolate is not one of my favorites.

LOL - so ironic you would ask this question because I was just asking someone about it yesterday. My cousing from SF pronounes it jer-er-delly, but I heard someone on one of the cooking shows pronounce is gear-er-delly. I like it best at no more than 60% dark.

GEAR ar DELLY is the way we say it here in California. And in San Francisco, you can buy the chocolates at their location in the wharf area.

I like their filled squares, raspberry and mint are my favorites. DS bought me some for Mom's Day. I am not wild about really dark chocolate ones, too bitter. But that is DH's favorite so I give him those squares.

I always pronouced it Gear-ahh-deli (guess I didn't see or hear that middle "r")

It may not be Godiva, but I know a lot of bakers prefer to use the Ghirardelli chips instead of Hersey's or Nestle's for their cookies and baking.

I love the Ghirardelli Carmel squares...not a fan of dark chocolate either.I got a box of Godiva Chocolates for Mothers Day...I'm in CHOCOLATE HEAVEN!!

I second or third the Bay Area pronunciation, silent 'r' in the middle. I don't think we really put an emphasis on one syllable, just roll it together.
I love the peppermint bark and the chocolate mint. Mmmmmmmm

Another that pronounces it like lindakathy. I was just in SF at the wharf over the weekend. We didn't go in the store though. Trying to lose a little weight. The weather was beautiful!

I've always heard it pronounced Gear-Ah-Deli no matter where I've been in CA. Love, love, love dark chocolate. I'll take whatever anyone else doesn't want. :-)

I like it alot for baking. Used to be able to buy it at Trader Joe's but the one I go to now doesn't sell it anymore(so not sure if that's a local thing or what). I bought the white, dark and milk in chunks.
Gear ah deli is how I say it too.
and I love dark chocolate..I prefer it over milk anyday..
And I think Dove is yucky, I'd rather have a regular ol Hershey's bar of it.

My new chocolate passion is Dilettante. I am loving the dipped dried fruits. Makes me feel like I'm eating something extra good for me. LOL

The correct pronunciation is gear-are-delly.I looked it up.LOL
And it isn't my favorite chocolate either.I also prefer the Dove.X DIL brought me a piece of some that her relatives brought from Norway for me to taste.It was delicious!

It is pronounced Gear-ar-delly.

I lived in the Bay Area for 30 years and when DH and I were dating we loved to go to the Ghirardelli ice cream store in Fisherman's Wharf. We'd get one of their hot fudge sundaes and split it. (They were huge!) We no longer live there, but I can still taste it. Yum!!!!
