I think that it sounds very sophisticated and would look wonderful w/ mirrors in gold. I also think that the gold would be a really nice juxtaposition w/ the oak desk.

What type of material for a rug are you partial to? Wool, rag, natural fiber, cotton?

Thanks ttodd. I have karastan rugs, an oriental and pottery barn rugs. My house is very eclectic and I love antiques. I don't lean towards modern at all. This room has a door that opens to our bedroom which is gray wisp in color but rarely is that open. This sitting room is across the hall from our dining room which is barn red. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I love your home by the way.

gold mirrors would look very nice. I would think you would like a lighter colored rug.

I will try to do pictures tomorrow sometime. Currently, it's not much to look at since there's not much in there yet. With the brown walls, it looks like a cave now which is why I need help. I want cozy!

That's okay, that's why it's necessary to see the room. Lighting will be a serious consideration in such a room.

How about the addition of another color, like light blue in the rug? It might make the color palette a bit more complex.

I would think that a rug with lots of cream in it would be very nice - and the suggestion to add another color is a good one.

On the wall of mirrors, the gold frames sound lovely. Consider mixing in some empty gold frames as well as perhaps the initial for the family name painted gold.

Thanks to all of you who took time to respond. My dh and I have concluded that the dark brown is really not what we are liking in that room. htnspz really hit the nail on the head with bringing up the light issue. In addition to the dark color , we live surrounded by trees. So now my new question is a paint choice. In our downstairs, we have some strong colors such as Hampshire gray and a barn red. In the foyer I have a sand beige which is much like sepia tan by bm and does have a little peach undertone to it. This sitting room is off of this color. With all of the color going I am need some neutral relief. Please comment with paint suggestions. I love color but don't want my my house looking like a circus. Thanks so much.

I'm waiting for the pictures too. Like you, I love antiques. I'm partial to traditional style rugs. How about finding a rug you love with several different colors in it? You can then use those colors throughout the room in draperies, pillows, upholstery, etc. A rug would be a good inspiration/starting place.

ttodd--I absolutely love that whole farmhouse! I think I am leaning towards a color similar to BM's Richmond gold but haven't totally decided. If I go that route, I have a karastan rug that would go in that room. I was flipping through March's Country Living and found a room painted with SW's leatherbound and really liked it. The richmond gold is not as dark so it may work.
