Looking for a forum on historical home interior design

Does anyone know about an interior design forum where people are into discussing historical interior styles and decor ideas from other countries and cultures? I have found various blogs but no forums so far.

I love reading about home decor from different eras and cultures. Right now I am into retro modernist style (Art Deco, MCM and the 70's). I'm also trying to incorporate some of the style ideas at home as I renovate our former home office.

In the past I went through a medieval Gothic stage. I read a lot on medieval interiors and architecture before traveling to France and seeing the style. Also, one of my favorite decor styles is Art Nouveau. Moscow, where I'm from, has many fabulous examples of Art Nouveau architecture and interior design.

Flo, I wanted to show you what I ended up doing with lighting fixtures. These are E.F.Chapman Flemish sconces and a foyer fixture that I found at Ballard Designs. The sconces came with shades, but my DH has a thing about shades and I in this application, I think he may be right. But, don't tell him:) This is the dining room fixture that I also found at Ballard Designs. It is a twisted wire style and the foyer fixture has some twisted metal, too. Here is a view of the dining room fixture from the foyer. The lighting is difficult. I tried to balance my more formal style with the rustic plantation plain style of the house. I followed your suggestion and used the dipped candle style bulbs. I really like them. Thank you for your help for talking me off the ledge. I'm getting geared up for the interior painters next week. I've declared war on the green. It's all going to be warm white. Thanks, again.

I can’t agree. The photos show none of the stippling or medullary rays of tiger oak, nor does it appear to have open grain, like oak. Because the milling of tiger oak is wasteful, it’s mainly used for furniture. it would have to be a very high-end house to have tiger oak trim, doors, and floors throughout. The waviness in the grain looks much more characteristic of Doug Fir to me.

I would say colonial style and scandi go well together. I disagree strongly that you should keep to the original style of the house. However, as a designer, I would say different ideas look better together if they share some similar characteristics or are related - as colonial and scandi are. I think there some degree of lightness and openess in both style, turned wood in both scandi and colonial furniture, although lighter wood and white in scandi. With a keen eye and careful research, two styles that share some common denominators can always work; otherwise you risk looking like a museum otherwise. I would not mix tudor and scandi for instance or high victorian english, as they are diametrically opposed, but if they share components, go ahead.

IMO living in a space first for a bit of time is a good idea since houses have a way of telling you how they funtion and sometimes not how you thought. I aslo do not think long distance design works . I would never assume to do a design job with seeing the actual space You don’t really say what you are planning so maybe share that with us along with the to scale floor plan and pictures. But honestly IMO wait until you have lived there .I was just on your other post and really IMO do not do this before living there for at least 3-6 months.

Thank you for your reply! The Old House forum has some interesting threads. I loved reading about old places in Philadelphia! But I'm looking for a broader historical scope.

I don't know why I didn't think of this one before! I don't know if they have discussion forums, but they offer decorating help for MCM styles.

I seem to recall a past article on pink bathrooms. :)

Have you seen Old House Dreams? The blogger will occasionally include homes in other countries (mostly UK), although the majority of the homes featured are earlier than MCM. She, or one of her subscribers, might be able to recommend other forums or blogs.

Check out Lotta Living for all things mid-century. It's more architectural + object than it is actual decorating, but it's informative.

If you like magazines, look at Atomic Ranch and Modernism for MCM. Then look at Style 1900 for Art Nouveau + Arts & Crafts.

Retrorenovation.com is one of my favorites, but I haven't heard about the Old House Dreams blog. I looked at the latter: it has a good selection of modernist houses!

Old House Web lost most of it's members because of a horrible spambot problem. Most of the posters moved to wavyglass.org.

jmc01, thank you for the wavyglass link! I saw at least one other familiar name there. It's a shame that OHW has had such a problem with spammers and spambots--I noticed that GW was having similar issues earlier this year.
