Wallpaper Glue

I've just removed wallpaper from my daughter's room. It is vinyl so it came off very easily. It wasn't paperbacked, preglued paper, so I know the glue is still on the wall. Is there anything that I could use to "paint" or prime over the existing glue? It would sure be alot easier. If not I'll have to wet the glue and then wipe it off, over and over....

Moisten the glue and scrape as much off as you can with a putty scraper. You'll have to wash off the remainder with soapy water, not fun, but it works. ;o)

Scrub it off with warm water and detergent. Since you may not succeed in removing every trace, then prime with Gardz.

Gardz (that is the correct spelling) is a primer that is formulated to seal off wallpaper adhesive. Unlike many paints and primers, it doesn't react with or activate the adhesive.

It's a bit hard to use, because it's quite thin, about the consistency of skim milk. It's also about the color of skim milk, but it dries clear.

TSP is really pretty amazing stuff. Yes, I know it's toxic to fish, but so are many other things we do. I dispose of mine by pouring it into the yard, rather than direct to wastewater. I use it as rarely as possible, but sometimes only it will do. Sizing, I've determined, is only dilute wallpaper paste, which TSP is very effective for. If the stuff you're finding is not water soluble, then it's maybe something that went over the sizing. I also use "tincture of time" a lot. Spray water, let sit, scrape or wipe; spray water, let sit, scrape or wipe. Finally, I have one odd solution for some things... I paint over them (usually with latex), and once the paint is dry but before it's fully cured, it's easy to scrape or cut a lumpy substrate away. I use this for old, very hard paint drips and edges, for example, which come away sometimes like butter once a new bit of paint is put over top. If this glue of yours is lumpy, it might work. Karin L

It probably doesn't matter what you use really. I would use a green scrubbie pad and whatever tool you choose that gets the wall wet. I would just use a squirt bottle with hot water. This is a fairly normal experience when someone has used sizing on drywall actually. My theory is that the sizing combines with the residual paste that is left on the wall and creates this rubberized goo. This is why we don't use sizing on drywall, but I know for years it's what everyone working in the paint stores was telling us this is the proper thing to use. From now on, prime!

I ran into the problem you're having in my upstairs bath. I even used a power sander and the stuff still wouldn't come off. (Did get the little lumps n bumps smoothed out though.) Primed with oil-based primer, then when dry applied two coats of latex paint. That was 4 1/2 years ago. All is still well ;)

Shellac will seal the odor in very nicely. It is about as 'natural' as you can get in a finish. The shell of the lac bug is disolved in alcohol (the drinking stuff with methyl alcohol added to 'denature' it). Plaster cannot be sanded without destroying the finish layer. It is also VERY hard.

Scrape what you can. Then wipe off with TSP. Just did this a couple weekends ago. I have scrapped lots of wall paper- and this was the best to remove the glue residue.

If you make the choice to use TSP indoors you have to find a way to flood rinse it. I think they even use the word "flood" on the directions - can't remember.

But anyhoo, if you don't thoroughly, thoroughly, super rinse TSP it will come back to haunt u. Might be a week later, might be a year later. TSP retards adhesion of whatever product you lay on top of it -- that's why you have to flood rinse it.

Because of the risk involved with TSP and the fact that it has to so aggressively be rinsed, it's not recommended for indoor use. It's an out door kinda thing.

If you're going to buy something to dissolve the glue, order some Safe-n-Simple. It's made for removing wallpaper. Soap and water - not so much. And you have rinsing issues with soap and water or fabric softener and all those other 'make-do' kind of removal methods.

Clean up as much as you possible can and then absolutely use GARDZ to seal it and prep it for paint.
