OT: Trip to ER cost me my computer time!

Guess I missed a few new quilts and things posted last night. Am trying to catch up quickly before running out this morning.

But wanted to share what I was doing....Had to make our first trip to the ER with my 2 1/2yo son!!

The history is that I have a 14yo dog that's very arthritic and can't do the substandard steps on the old deck here at the house. So just after we moved in DH made a handicapped ramp off the deck for him. The kids KNOW they are not supposed to play on it, but kids will be kids and a climbing boy will climb! No matter how often you tell him!

So the kids had been playing outside quite nicely for awhile. Suddenly about 5:30 Cynthia comes charging in with that distinct tone of voice that something was definitely wrong. I raced out and Jason had already picked himself up and started for the stairs, with blood pouring down the back of his head!

As I put the story together, he was playing on this ramp, and in coming down slipped off the edge and fell. He cut the back of his head on something, perhaps the edge of the wood, as he went. He had a 1" gash on the back side.

I'm a calm type parent...no hysterics or anything. Took him to the bathroom with a dishtowel in hand and with water wiped him up a bit. He did NOT like this part!! Calmed him down, determined we were in for a trip and quickly put together a diaper bag with treats (it was dinner time) and juice cups for him and sister. Called DH who was on the motorcycle and couldn't answer the phone and left him messages. After that called MIL who lives not too far away...and she was going to meet me at the hospital to care for DD while I deal with DS.

When I got to hospital, DS was asleep (naptime in the car) and DH was already there. They took us in fairly quickly, and ultimately Jason slept until they needed to check his pupils. Then two staples later and we were done!

Got home about 8pm with dinner in hand. And then DS in my lap until he fell asleep. He slept all night, surprisingly, and seems to be doing fine today. Staples will stay in for a week and then need to be taken out by the pediatrician.

Nothing like a little excitement! Kind of a little surprised it's taken 2 1/2 years to get to this point with him...hopefully, it will be some time before the next adventure like this! !LOL

The scalp sure bleeds a lot, even with a tiny cut! I'm glad it wasn't worse. Good thing kids are short. Less time to gain speed as they fall.

Lucy, you are funny. I totally understand, as Mike is on eveyone's mind, lately. There is quite a bit of travel, but this trip was unusual. We had to bring two editing systems. Way too much gear to travel by plane. With camera and lighting gear, it filled my large Sprinter, cargo van from top to bottom, front to back. It is nice to be able to sit here in the van or a restaurant, and chat with all. Hong... I have a small video and television production company. A great deal of my business is for the PGA of America, through a larger production company. We are on our way home from Phoenix, where the PGA just had their annual meeting. If you saw, or smelled, the rat-hole motel we ended up in last night, you wouldn't think travel so glamorous. Our own fault... It will tell you one important fact. Is the hardware good or bad? Is the problem in hardware or software? All computers have a line between hardware and software. Diagnostics will quickly identify which side of the line has a problem. In your case, the problem is probably on the software side. However this software, only provided by better manufacturers, makes identifying problems faster and easier. Removes all doubt. Everyone should execute their comprehensive hardware diagnostic once when the machine is still good to know what it does. Most do not even know that software exists. Important is to first identify hardware integrity before moving on to software problems. Malware can be first removed by the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool. Downloaded from their web site. Latest version is probably 14 Feb 2012. This will remove the simplest problems. Enough to get most machines functional enough to do other solutions. The program even can be loaded on a CD or flash drive to be executed from there. It does not remove all malware. But it is an easiest solution to implement on the worst infected machine. Your mal-ware software (McAfee, Norton, Trend Micro, etc) then can execute to remove more comprehensive infections.

I agree right now if you can keep your old pc working for you and wait till windows 7 comes out you will be avoiding having to purchase any upgrades. It will be out in about a year. If you have any friends that have pc knowledge likely they could easily help you install a new hard drive and some RAM, these are things I do myself but my first time I was pretty anxious. I also agree that the desktop is generally the best option unless you travel a lot and would need a laptop for that. My sister just asked me the same question and I talked her into a desktop pretty quickly, if you have not used a laptop try asking a friend with one to let you try it out for an hour or so, feel how the keyboard feels, see how you like the touch pad instead of a mouse, etc. If you have any problems seeing also consider the smaller screen of a laptop. I have pretty severe hand problems so using a smaller keyboard would be very difficult. Sitting in a chair with the laptop on your lap would require some type of laptop desk so you do not block the air flow. As stated updating and replacing parts in a laptop is much more difficult. One thing you could definitely do also rather than install a new hard drive in your pc is buy a stand alone usb backup hard drive and move all your thousands of pictures and music and other files and data to that hard drive and free up your hard drive in the pc, if you did that and got rid of any old programs you no longer need, clean out any junk files and folders, empty the recycle bin, defrag the hard drive you may find you have plenty of room on that 80Gig hard drive. I have been seeing some incredible prices lately on usb hard drives so you could easily find a nice size one for around $50, and you could use that stand alone hard drive with any new computer you buy in the future. Plus no one would have to install it for you, you just plug it into your usb port and then you can access it from your pc just like your other hard drive. Add some RAM to what ever belarc says is your limit for that pc or at least 2 gig and I bet you would be surprised. RAM is cheap. I just bought a 1gig stick for one of my computers and it was less than $20 shipped. If your current pc is a desktop I would also highly suggest turning it off unplug it and open the side panel up and clean out all the dust bunnies, that can really affect the performance of a pc. Cleaning the computer and its components ecost has some very good prices right now this search is for under $50 units but it gives you some ideas. well now you have lots of options and ways to go and up to you to make that big decision. We have a pop-up camper. We've camped in several western states at various campgrounds including national parks, forestry service, BLM and a few others. Most are a lot less expensive than the KOA costs mentioned above. Most have cost $15-$25 per night. Some spots are even free. It all depends on your wants and needs. We have a generator and don't necessarily have to be attached to water or electricity. If you're going to be camping in certain states on a regular basis, it would be worth it to buy a couple of books that detail the campgounds within a state, their views, amenities, comfort, etc. You can also look up some info on-line so you know what to expect. My dh always likes to plan his trip before we go. Sometimes we get the campgrounds we want and sometimes they are full. Some campgrounds are reservable and others are not. The book can usually give us ideas on other areas to look. It will also let you know if the camping area is big enough for your RV. The books are also good for sightseeing ideas that we would have otherwise missed. There are also on-line forums for those who like to camp. It's nice to have a first hand account on whether an area is worth your time or not.

Jenn, so glad the cut wasn't too serious and he's fine. Kids will be kids as we know. I spent most of my childhood in the ER with gashes and puncture wounds, I was such a tomboy. I sure wish they did staples back then. Glad everything is okay now!

That remimds me of raising 3 boys. They had LOTS of stitches. They must have had good bones but not tough skin. It became quite routine for us, especially middle DS. DH used to say he had more stiches that a singer sewing machine. They are so tough. He may have a little bald spot. Ask me how I know!

Glad to hear it wasn't more serious. I'm like Fatquarters, raising boys is an experience...We have 4 and 1 of our's was forever getting something stitched up...We were on 1st name basis at the ER and I often think, if that had been now, we would probably have been investigated...Oh boy, those were the days! It's no wonder I was reaching for the hair color at an early age....

Glad Jason's injury wasn't any more serious. He probably faired better than you, your dh and his Gramma.LOL

I hate to tell you, but it doesn't get any easier as they get older.LOL Our 11 year old grandson had stitches in his forehead just a couple of months ago. You just never know with those little ones.

Kathy, it's funny. I think we, the grownups, certainly did better than him. We are all very laid back about things...MIL raised 5 kids on her own. ER trips didn't happen too often due to finances...she handled things on her own.

My kids are taught to "get up and brush off". I'll give it a kiss, but unless it's bleeding it doesn't get a bandaid. And then, they usually take the bandaid off after an hour or so. We just don't make a big deal out of injuries.

The Dr. asked if he needed some nurses to help hold Jason, etc. We said, "Nahh. We'll do fine." And we did. We are just very practical, I guess.

It's funny. After I inspected the wound, my first thought was whether I should give him dinner before we went to the ER...they can prove to be lengthy waits and it was dinner time! lol (My mom did just that when I was in the same shape at the age of 10!)

Glad he is OK Jenn.My son was the same. He broke his femur when he was 14 and had to have surgery to put a metal rod in his thigh. They were playing football in the woods and I had to make him get in the car to take him to the ER.
I am calm also, I waited until I got home (6 hrs in surgery) to have a nervous breakdown.
I still have nightmares about how much pain he must have been in getting into that small car.
But what else could I do??? You just pick them up and run.

Glad to hear you all are doing ok . My son too is a walking disaster, must be a boy thing. When he broke his arm we did get questioned a lot on how it happened. I guess maybe I was too calm. When they told me they had to X-Ray his arm to see if it was broken, I told them I didn't think they needed to. Maybe to see how bad it was but, it was obviously broken. (Nifty 30 degree angle where there shouldn't have been one was a clear give away) When he threw up from the pain meds I just calmly asked for a pair of scissors to cut his shirt off. I couldn't see pulling it over his head and dumping it in his hair. My DH was not so calm, I kept sending him home for things (clean cloths, let the dog out...) I guess one parent, usually the mom, is wired to get through whatever the situation. That little guy will probably give you plenty more. Sounds like he's a good little trouper. Hope he does as well when the staples come out.

Well my DGS just had to go to the hospital for stitches but it didn't happen here it happened in New York were he is visiting his mothers family! When raising my 2 boys one had LOTS of stitches once twice in the same day LOL! Glad to hear it wasn't too serious!

I'm glad he is fine. I think the kids do better if the parents don't make a big deal out of things.

As a mother who raised two boys I'll tell you: this is just the beginning.

Boys=blood=bangs=bumps=bruises=bandages

You have a good, practical attitude that will serve you well for future trips to the ER. Glad to hear he's doing well.

Is he telling the story yet? It's always neat hearing a little kid relay a tale of injury.

I think you have a kid somewhat like my brother!

The running joke around my house is that my youngest brother could cut his arm off, have it in his other hand, walk into the house and say, completely deadpan (as usual), "I think I need to go to the doctor". Okay, this isn't exactly a joke, because he's done similar things (holding his bleeding nose in place, come in and asked for Mom to 'please stitch me up, so I can go back to play' comes to mind).

Glad to hear your son is alright now, though. And thanks for the giggle. Telling us about your son's accident made me go through all the really good times when my brothers and I used to play, until they got 'too old for that kind of thing'. :)
