I know that in some languages, to depolish is as common a word as "to polish" so if I'm speaking to people who know that language, the question would start with the implicit ability to depolish anything.E.g. "what scouring powder or what grit sandpaper is the right one to use for this particular surface here? Do I start with 2000 grit? Do I buy poudre texienne, or pierre verte or what? Do I do it damp or dry?"

Search "dépolir" in French and you'll see people are only asking about powder, paper and scouring paste (It's like toothpaste without the sugar) when they want to remove a shine. Nobody asks if it is do-able.

I left a piece of a shiny marble sill outdoors for months. It was brilliantly shiny at first. It naturally de-polished itself. Or, the sun did it.

Everything shiny gets duller over time.

For your same reasons I looked into getting my island of polished Rosso Verona marble honed after installation. The plastic orange juice pitcher left an etch circle the 2nd day it was in. The fabricator who installed it gave me a quote of $800-$900 for a 4 ft. x 11 ft. island. Since the money fountain had run dry I decided to live with it. I suggest you get a quote from the company that installed it. They come to your house, seal the doorways the best they can, and use the right sandpaper to remove the polish. There will be a lot of dust they told me.

They took my sample of my polished marble I used when doing kitchen research and honed that for me so I could see what it would look like so you could do that too. Definitely more dull without as deep a color for my red marble.

Thanks for the input.. Kevin- unfortunately, it is already in. Has been since January.. I am not thrilled with the upkeep- not so much the constant cleaning of it, but the water rings that are forming every couple of weeks that won't go away. I just had the fabricator come back out today to "take care of it" and asked them to seal it again..Unfortunately, I wasn't here, my dh was and he thought they fixed it. They just left around 20 min. ago and I checked everything and the water stains are still there.. I don't want to be that person that complains constantly. They have been here 3 times already fixing stuff-- Is there a way to get the stains out myself? I just don't get it... I may have to call another company to see if they can fix it. ARGHHHH

This is exactly what I want to do...after living with granite for years that I inherited from previous owners, I've finally figured out that what I don't like about granite is that it's shiny. This might be my solution! Love love love how that kitchen turned out!

I have a honed counter top that is called Super White, harder than marble. It came out duller than I thought it would. Is it possible to put a sealer on it to make it shine? Or is there any product you can put on a counter top after it is honed to make is shine?

I realize this is an old post, but wondering the cost of having granite countertops honed in place. If you're still checking responses, I'd love to know! Thank you!

Also looking for this info. I HATE my polished super white granite. They are so etched and cracked in places. Is it worth it to have honed (I wanted honed to begin with but fabricator talked me out of it :( I have quotes to replace with honed marble for the whole kitchen around 4300. I have someone coming to quote us on honing in place and will report back but any insight?

If you have etching, it's doubtful you have granite. That's good news because it's going to be easier to hone a marble-ish.
