What do you make of this PB's Comments

Central FL here... I'll just call them PB A and PB B (BIG pool builders, both have been commented on here in the past, and always positive if I recall correctly).

Background:

- PB A allows us to out source decking and coping, while PB B does not (with PB A, we'll save about 4,600)

- PB A has better prices, in general, for options (another $1000 savings)

- PB B once told us that he would not match PB A's price because he does not respect them (i.e. they are not in the same league)

- PB A never had a bad thing to say about PB B

- PB B has lots of negative comments sbout PB A (e.g. they are not paying their subs, top sales staff left recently)

- PB B is always pushing his Top Quality compared to other PBs... for example, his electricians are top notch, hence they deserve the $15/foot for wiring from perwe terminal to equipment (for every foot over 40')

- Told PB B that we were leaning toward PB A... now all of a sudden PB B is willing to meet PB A's price

I've talked to one of the subs for PB A already, and so far, so good. I'll make more calls to subs for both PB A and PB B.

In any event, all the negatives from PB B does not sit well with me... seems almost like a desperate attempt to get my business. What do you all think??

Sounds like you answered your own question. Anybody who says this is my price and then says no is not my idea of who I would go with. Kind of like a car guy asking you how much you want to pay every month instead of how much you want to pay for the car.

Gorilla,

I agree with repair guy. I try to go with my gut instinct and from what you have said PB A is the way to go. Maybe you could post who the builders are and the area you live to get first hand experiences from their customers. Also, ask for references and go look at the pools they have done. Lastly, as repair guy said, I too have a problem with someone not matching a price and then doing so only when they believe they would lose the business. I think there is something to be said for someone who sticks to their word - even in this situation as it relates to their pricing. Just think what will happen once you sign on the dotted line with PB B. Just my 2 cents.

Rudeness always sort of catches me off guard. I just don't expect it and I'm quite taken aback by it. So my normal reaction is the "deer in the headlights" syndrome. I sort of stare blankly at the person for about a second or two. Then my wits return and my MO is just to ignore the comment and either continue the normal conversation or divert my attention elsewhere, like to another person if possible. It's always easy to think of great comebacks later, but for me, no comment works best. I'm usually fairly reactionary and have said things I regret so this sort of natural reaction is maybe a survival thing for me. It prevents me from saying something that I'll wish I hadn't. Now, in the case of a close friend I might let them know that the comment was hurtful later, just because we're friends and we have that comfort level. Depends on what was said, how it was said, and my perceived intent of the speaker. In the case of a relative stranger, or an acquaintance whom I wouldn't consider to be a friend, I'm happiest keeping my mouth shut. I will admit that later I'll tell the story to DH and go over the rudeness and my feelings, etc. way more than he wants to hear! But that's my way of getting it off my chest while maintaining my composure when needed.

PB's, do you discount for cash jobs?

We are doing an owner build & I've learned a lot about the business in a short time. I can see how a PB would not benefit from discounting for cash. They pay the subs the same regardless of whether you pay them cash or not. The SUBS, however, are very anxious to work for owner builders because they often get shorted(or have their payments delayed) at the end of the month by some of their pool builder employers. I learned this through the transition of April to May. All of the subs were aggrevated at the beginning of the month because of this. I've heard that the builders tell them, "Well, the clients haven't paid us yet so we are waiting for them and will pay you in two weeks when their next deposit is due." They do get their money, but not at the end of the month when expected and it makes them upset b/c they have other people to pay as well. I'm not talking about the creeps who go bankrupt & never pay their subs. I'm just talking about builders delaying payments. The subs can't really do anything about it because they want the builder to continue using them so they really just suck it up even though it is unfair. If you pay them as soon as their job is completed, it's like an extra bonus that they were not expecting. They will work until 8 p.m., on weekends, in the rain...whatever they have to do. I know this is not an answer to your question, but still insight into the business.

I personally donÃ¢ÂÂt care for the rug under the bed because you donÃ¢ÂÂt have that much open floor space around it. As I think I mentioned when originally posted about it, if you had a lot of open floor space and were creating an island of the bed area, that would be one thing. But in your room, the rug is very close to the dresser, etc, so no visual breathing space there, and it comes up far enough under the bed that it looks like you just didnÃ¢ÂÂt get a big enough rug - you need more open floor there, too, imo. I notice that the only place you seem to have looked for comforters is PB. There are a lot of other resources, as well as perhaps local stores for you to shop. I think sometimes we all get caught up in the convenience of shopping on line, and forget to do things locally, that there are things out there that even the online sites donÃ¢ÂÂt have but are carried in the store, or are a past season item on sale that isnÃ¢ÂÂt in a quantity worth showing on line. I think the first thing you should decide is how you want to use the bedding. If you are just thinking about keeping the new patterned comforter at the end of the bed, that is different and less impact that having the patterned piece covering most of the bed. If you want to use the matelasse as the primary bedding, that is a pretty casual, country (or french country, if you prefer) look, so you need to choose the other bedding so that it works with that feel. Your original bedding is much fancier and more formal than matelasse fits with. I think the point about the rug being soft and muted is another important consideration.

amysrq, thanks so much for that link - their products are absolutely so interesting and unusual. What a fun way to add a small punch of color. I found several items there to consider and I was pleased to see the prices were very reasonable too. I wish I'd known about them before the holidays because I see lots of items I could buy my children for gifts - okay I need to remember for next year and their birthdays. Just look at those umbrellas and tell me that you wouldn't enjoy carrying one and using it during a gloomy rainy day? They make you smile, I'm buying one for myself and I may buy a couple for my umbrella stand. tryin2grow - thanks for the link and you deserve the applause. I'm like you, I think sprinkling a few of these colorful items around the house is playful- too much is well too much, but to pull out a pair of fun salad implements for a weekday meal or a funky mirror from your otherwise sedate purse just adds a touch of je ne sais quoi. Sounds like PBA has higher standards of behavior ie not knocking PBB. That will probably hold true for his building standards as well. As a contractor we never knock the competition, if a prospective client asks, we tell them to do their research with references and licensing agencies. If PBB lied about his pricing policy, what else did he lie about? Hope this helps, Barb

I agree w/ all the others. I would be very hesitant to use a builder that is badmouthing another builder. It speaks volumes about his character. Just do your research first. I would check w/ each of his subs just to make sure. It sounds like PB A is your guy, though.

Another follow-up... checked with 3 main subs for Florida Pools and PB B (Gunite, Plumbing, Decking). All check out, and rave about Florida Pools (and PB B for that matter).

DW agreed with you all: bad mouthing a competitor is just uncalled for. Unless I hear something bad from a sub during the next few days, we'll be going with Florida Pools.

You can also do a search on this forum for "pool builders - central florida" and find threads where a lot of us have weighed in on our experiences. Florida Pools was one of the companies we were considering, and I don't think I heard anything negative about them in the course of my research. We ended up going with Bella Pools, just because we wanted more control over the process and ended up coming in at about $6000 under what Florida Pools bid us...

Badmouthing is my biggest turnoff with anything. If all you can do is badmouth, your product must be lacking.

I would not recommend telling PB A that B badmouthed him, PB A probably already knows this.

Also make sure your check the BBB against complaints.
