Well, we have something like you describe, though our window trim is painted to match the baseboard. The doors on the first floor are stained wood, while the doors on the 2nd floor are painted. The windows and stained doors are Douglas fir and the wood on the windows was so lovely that we couldn't bear to paint it. Of course, then we had to paint the baseboards and trim as we did not want to mix woods here and Doug fir for all the trim would have been prohibitively expensive. Floors are red oak. Yes; they should be white. Thanks so much for pulling me back to reason! The choice was also confirmed...by the contractor. After all, he's a 27-year-old USAF veteran, former cop, with a degree in construction sciences. He knows style! LOL I knew, in my heart-of-hearts (as Grandma would say) the ivory just wouldn't work. That's what I get for buying curtains before the remodeling even began.

Yes...I'll try and get a picture tomorrow when I go to the house....But, we are doing cream cabinets- Our island will be stained dark walnut as will our window above our sink. I have seen a kitchen just like that and loved it...It was, to me- beautiful...which is why we chose to do it... I say- go for it and stain it....you can always go back and paint it if you don't like it...but not the other way around!!!

I like the trim that you have, too. And see a couple of problems with stepping up the width of the trim. In the first photo, you don't have enough wall space right side of the door for much wider trim. Maybe 3/4-1" of wall space there. In the second photo, it looks like the current trim is almost touching the fireplace mantle on the left. I would love to replace trim in my house but I have too many doors close to walls like in your first picture. I know that unbalanced wider trim would bother me a lot more than the narrow trim (that fits) bothers me. One wide leg with a narrow leg on the other side--just no. My sense on scale wouldn't be able to tolerate it. What I would wholeheartedly embrace changing is the spidey web arched transom over the French doors. Although I really like it, it is just all wrong in Colorado rustic. And wrong for nudging towards a more Craftsman look. Should I change the hinges and knobs of the doors? Your call. Changing hinges on existing doors can end up opening a can of worms. And the only time that I notice hinges is when some lazy slob has painted over them. Oh, and I notice knobs on entry doors so I would pick something I really liked for there. Otherwise, if they all match inside the house, they're just tools AFAIC.
