need a vote quick..shutter colors with pics

I need a quick vote while the kids are still napping.

I painted the bottom 2 shutters, left one blue and right one maroon. The new shutters are the same brown color as the cuurent ones, but I wnat to know if I should paint them before they go up. They are skinnier for the top ones so that they won't touch.

YOu can barely tell the diffrence with the maroon, I Think.

I prefer the blue. What color is your door? Also, yes, you should paint them before putting them up, rather than after.

THat sounded kind of funny...yes I would paint them before I put them up. What I meant was, should I just put them up as is (the brown) or paint them blue/maroon before putting them up.

jlc LOVE the colors If you have occasional moisture, I would rec remedying the source before putting anything down - I know & have lived to regret it - 2 carpets & one expensive piece of high end Armstrong flooring later. The rolled flooring will trap the moisture underneath & grow mold - I pulled mine up and out several times w/water damage, cleaned w/bleach & put it back. It was such a beast to take up as it is so large & difficult to manage. 1st place to ck is gutters, downspouts, leaders all pitched away from house - landscaping/gardens should be pitched also for run off away from foundation - if its not those it could be a high water table, which can be remedied w/sump pump If you clean the floor really well with TSP (tri sodium phosphate) rinse, rinse, rinse - then you could put several coats of cement paint - and keep ckn'g on the moisture before committing to another type of flooring. I just put the peel/press tiles down on my utility side of my basement - did it myself & they are holding this pic is old & shows the nice armstrong flooring

mitch - still waiting for solid tan and a floral sample from FabricGuru. If those don't work out, I think I am going with the solid dark green that I posted above in the very last set of pictures, probably with the floral throw pillows as shown on the settee even though that's not an outdoor fabric. Hopefully the dark (olive?) green won't show the dirt (or other junk) too much. I'm keeping the bold striped cushions that I think you like, since they're outdoor cushions, and even though the green doesn't match, they're going to be on the other side of the porch. I wish I could just find outdoor cushions that fit the other pieces (n matching stripe would be nice) but 1) I think those cushions are a few years old so pattern no longer available) and 2) other chairs are bigger so cushions are too small, the settee also seems to be an odd (smaller) size - 40" wide instead of 44". Thanks for the tip about light-colored Sunbrella, though, I had been considering that (thinking they'd be easy-clean even if they were light) after seeing "Antique Beige Canvas" and "Flagship Papyrus" in Calico Corners the w/e.

Thank you to everyone for the thoughtful and thought-provoking answers. You've given me a lot of ideas, and pointed out areas that I could improve that I hadn't thought of. Counting up the responses, it is pretty evenly split between staying with the original dark green (or another dark color) and changing to a sunflower/dark gold color. I also like the deeper blue posted by door1 and tracey b's eggplant door. So many choices, only one front door! It's raining here (again, and I live in an area with perpetual drought, so I should be grateful) so I won't be painting today, even though I'm anxious to bring this project to completion. I'm going to save my final color choice for a 'reveal' thread after I'm done. Some things that I am going to do, thanks to your suggestions: get bigger pots with more colorful plantings for the front porch, possible add a bench, add much more color to the plantings in front, look into replacing the light fixture with something larger and in scale with the house, and work on my DH to try to tame and/or replace some of our overgrown shrubbery. Again, thanks to everyone who helped me with your advice and opinions. Having fresh eyes evaluate my home really helped, and I will keep you posted! Sugar-Plum

Gray! Gray! Gray!!! No white walls, though! Light gray cabs with darker gray walls works. Or pale yellow walls. This will keep it bright and it works with your accent colors (My favorite colors are actually aqua and chartreuse). Use a GOOD quality paint on those cabinets though! Fine Paints of Europe or BM, not Home Depot stuff (Behr's, Martha Stewart) - find a color and get it matched, preferably in oil. I don't have pics, but my bedroom colors are Behr's Melted Butter walls (might be a bit too dark in kitchen - it is a very warm yellow), Behr's Flint Smoke trim and built-ins (medium gray), and Amphibian (charcoal) accent wall. Pale blue-gray ceiling (Misty Surf, I think - bought Sparkling Spring to match other grays, but was too light). For the cabs the color "River Rock" might work - lighter than Flint Smoke, darker than Sparkling Spring. Maybe "Whisper Yellow" walls - a shade lighter than mine. Again, Behr, but BM or FPE can color match. In my bedroom these colors appear a true gray - but you really have to try them (or any paint, for that matter) in your own space - the same paint can look totally different from one room to the next depending on lighting and sheen. Buy some sample sizes first. I also see this with a warm white trim around doors and windows. Our white trim is Behr's Pot of Cream, but seriously, it takes 3-4 coats (on top of primer) to cover well - not worth the "savings."

well, we decided to leave the new ones brown and just put them up as is. Here's the new shutters...

I know this is after the fact, but I think you made a great choice. The brown was easier (no painting) and looks good because it matches your trim and gutters. Also, the new shutters look sooo much better with the space in between them on top. Great job!

Wow, that was fast! All I could see was brown anyway : ) The new shutters look great.

Now on to painting the gutter the siding color : )

Yeah, we needed to do most of the work while the kids were sleeping. It was was really hard to see the difference in the colors I had chosen.
Not sure how we'll go about painting that gutter. We leaned out the windows to remove/install the shutters as we don't have a long extension ladder. Plus I'd probably just replace the gutter with a white on rather then have to prime and paint who knows how many times.
Extension ladders are a bit pricey AND we don't have anyplace to store one. We'll have to find someone to borrow from.
Next up is the front planting....but still haven't made any decisions yet.

It looks great. I would ask your neighbors and borrow an extension ladder. Someone must have one. I would repaint the front door with something that will pop. This is going to sound crazy but I have seen it and it looks great....a deep burnt orange. Not a bright pumpkin color, you want something that has a touch of brown in it. I think it would look great on your home. A neighbor borrowed my color decks about 2 months ago and hasnt given them back:( All I have is a phamplet from SW with the victorian colors on it. There is a color called Decorous Amber which is similar to what I had in mind but I would even go a tad darker and deeper.

oohh..that's an idea. Iwas thinking more along the lines of a maroonish brown, but maybe I'll have to play with an orangy brown

I do agree that the front door needs to be painted.

I loaned my friend all my large paint chips from BM and others paint stores. They were all in a shipping envelope with my paint key (colors I used in each room of my house).
My friend and her husband decided to return the paint samples late one night, and popped the envelope in our mailbox, and for some reason put the flag up. I had no idea she had done this until she called to make sure I had received the envelope. I hadn't and after a week, it still has not shown up.

I was hoping the mailman might return the envelope after he realized it was not outgoing mail, but no such luck. The envelope was actually addressed to me at my old address (where I had BM send them), so maybe the new owner (who works for my DH) will receive them and return.

Luckily, I have a copy of the house colors on my computer, but not all and those large BM chips are wonderful to use. My friend feels bad, and it really isn't a big deal, however it would be nice to have them back.
