I didn't vote in the other thread, but I would go with white, or a terra cotta shade you can pull from the brick.

The red works, of course, but I think it is the 'safe', expected choice.

The teal is good. The brass against that teal will be pretty.

My fav is the sunflower, though I would like to see it just a bit deeper, maybe a bit golder? My only concern on that is how the brass will look against it.

Thank you Les, I went with your previous suggestions of SW Really Teal and Sunflower, although neither one of them are as dark as the actual chips. The teenage mixing dude was preoccupied with phone calls and texting, so I'm not sure how accurate he was...

If I went with the sunflower, I would probably used oil-rubbed or antique bronze hardware, I think.

I love the yellow, but I'm in a yellow door mood so that my be coloring my opinion.

Question....what did you paint your samples on? It makes it much easier to visualize the color when you can see it in a life size sample.

I painted the samples on 'builder's paper' - a brown kraft paper that they sell in rolls at Lowes / Home Depot, etc. It is 35" wide, so it pretty much covers my 36" door. I'm not sure that the colors come through 100% accurate with the samples (because of the brown paper bag color background), but it gives you a pretty good idea!

Since the Wythe blue had caught my eye on another photo, no surprise that I like that one!

I really prefer the original! The others all look too bright to me.

I didn't vote before, but I love the yellow. Like Les, though, I wonder how your brass would look against it. Is your light black? I can't tell in the picture. If so, you could spray your door knob, etc. black to match the light. I sprayed mine with appliance paint and it's held up wonderfully well. I usually love red doors (have one myself), and maybe it's just my monitor but your red seems to clash a little with your brick. Your brick looks a little more orangey to me. Good luck. Pretty house so whatever you choose will look great!

I rather like your original color better than the other choices, but then, our last house was red brick, and we had an eggplant-colored front door, so I guess I'm just not disposed to liking the lighter colors. What about a teal that's more green than blue?

I understand our need for change every so often, but IMHO, all these brighter colors make it look like the door isn't part of the house. The original color fit, and so would white, navy, gray, or black, probably other more muted shades. But these bright or pastel colors make the door look like it belongs on a different style house. All the focus is on one thing rather than the home in its entirety.

Even when homes have red or other focal doors that look like they draw attention, they don't take all the focus, but rather are the central focus of a unit. They still appear to mesh with the rest. There's nothing else about the exterior that looks eclectic enough to tie to those colors. Maybe I'm just not edgy enough in my decorating, but IMHO I think you're straining to make something work that just doesn't work with what's there now. Again--just my humble opinion. You have a really lovely home though, and I think what it needs is less stilted landscaping-- maybe your DH can let other colors and some free-form shapes in there.

What sujafr said.....I think the colors say "look at me" instead of giving the eye a reason to look, if that makes any sense. Sort of like shouting to make a point when a more reasoned argument would do a better job, lol! I love color, but those all make your front door look completely unconnected to the rest of the house. The original color may not suit your personality, but it does suit the house.

I like the darker door as well. I think it would look better if you also painted the trim and casing around the door the same color. It would give the door more presence without the bold color. Just an idea.

I vote Really Teal. It's the right shade of the color you really wanted anyway.

In our neighborhood you can only paint your door certain colors. They're pretty lax about it but it would be my luck if I painted my door one of those bright colors they would be over here trying to sue me. I think you should leave the door as is and do flowers in all the colors you love in the bright tones. Maybe all along the sidewalk on either side up to the front door and see if that satisfies some color deprivation you are feeling where the front door is concerned. Lovely home!

Like angc I am also wondering if painting the sidelights to match the door will give the entry better proportions. The door looks very small relative to the rest of the house.

I also think a MUCH larger overhead light fixture will give the area more personality. You don't have to spend a lot, I've seen some great ones at Lowe's lately.

I liked the original best, though I also liked the red...until Betsy pointed out that it may clash with the brick. Have you thought about something like BM's Pumpkin Blush, Burnt Caramel, Pumpkin Cream, or Fall Harvest?

I vote with sujafr and kswl. The new colors you're trying just don't go with the house to me, and that's not because I decorate "traditionally" personally. I just think the new colors look unharmonious with your lovely home. Again, how about going wild with some brightly colored plants in the front to set off the dark green?

You have beautiful wide trim around the sidelights and over the arched window but you don't really notice it because of the white wall over the door.

My suggestion - go back to a dark color - the Charleston green worked but you might go a bit lighter, a deep, true evergreen. Or a deep, deep Prussian blue. With a dark door the arched window reads as belonging to the door - it's not just a black semi-circular hole floating up there as it is when the door is light.

Paint the wall over the trim to match your brick, but a bit lighter, a peachy rust. Now your trim pops and frames the door. Then decide if you want to paint the sidelights to match the door. Charleston green was used to paint window muntins and frames in the old days - not the trim though.

I don't think the white horizontal lines of your blinds do the sidelights any favors - they look better when they're more closed, more like shutters than sidelights. Your sidelights either need to be nearly all white - blinds almost closed, or all dark - no blinds or dark blinds.

Pruning bushes - the natural unchecked size of those bushes is way too big for the house - the usual suburban problem. They're cute when they're young and then you have to fight them all the time. It's hard not to do spheres and gumdrops when the things just want to be six feet tall! Or twelve feet.

That little crescent of grass on the inner curve of your walk would look good as a flower bed - nothing more than 18 inches tall.

What don't you like about the original green any more? I think that color (or a shade darker, as already suggested) fits the style of the house. The teals, aquas seem more at home on cottage-y architecture, or beach homes or maybe mid-century moderns.

I like the original too. If you like the teal, I would go much darker. Your house is beautiful!

Don't know if this would work, but how about trying a darker grey, similar to the roof color.

I really like the original too... but if you want to sample a couple more, I like the one door1 posted, or perhaps a deep burgundy. I don't care for the lighter colors on your home.

I also tested on the builder paper, and it does seem to be pretty accurate!

i like the direction of the teal shade the best, but i would go deeper and duskier with that shade...
i'm not crazy about the other samples.
the blue that door1 shows above would look really nice too, imo.

I like the yellow. A neighbour recently painted their front door a deep purple and I just love it. I'm sure you are sampled out by now though :)

I think the moulding around the door would look beautiful if painted black with the door the deep red try that out and see what you think! The side lites blend into the wall with the white.

I love the idea of Wythe Blue, but I agree with the others that it is too light for your house. BM Really Teal is too bright for my tastes. What about something like this?

IMO the front door color needs to be dark in order to stand up against all the green and the brick. Otherwise, a light paint color doesn't look like it belongs with your house.

Colors that I think would work are a dark rusty red, hunter green, black, or white. The red would play off the brick, the green would play off the plants, the white would harmonize with the trim, and the white would blend.

You have a beautiful, classic home. In my opinion, a pretty dark blue door would look great with your red brick and grey roof. I would take out the small piece of grass in front of the bushes, and add hostas, colorful flowers and a stylish bench. I also agree that your light fixture should be much larger.

I can see by the first picture that you have some flowers in the landscaping that probably just haven't bloomed yet. I like the first original picture the best.

Paint the area around the doors, a nice medium tan/beige it will make the side lights that are white stand out and paint the door a darker color like the shingles. (I am partial to black doors)

Also if you do that and like the color continue it to the rest of the painted areas on the front of the house. Leave the trim white.
The light fixture could be larger and hang a little lower. Add darker larger pots with flowers.

I'm sorry, in my previous post, I meant to say black would offer you a stark contrast to the other elements (white trim, red brick, green plants). Honestly, I think rust red, black, white, or dark green are the only colors that would work well.Your home is highly structured and if you add a colored door you are working against the existing color structures.

I agree that a darker color might look better, but maybe not as dark as your current green. We painted our front door a nice blue, similar to the one posted by door1. It is Van Deusen Blue by Ben Moore. Another great color is Newburg Green (Ben Moore). It is a darker teal than the one you have posted, but still quite vibrant.

I think the yellow is still the best. Of course, it won't live in isolation. Once the dark ORB (or even wrought iron would be good) hardware and kickplate are on the door,plus you have the texture and interest from the paneled door rather than the flat paper, the look will be far more traditional.

Adding dark iron pots on either side of the step, filled with flowers and foliage in shades of the rusty reds and golden yellows, the door color will feel connected.

I would love to see a larger light over the entry, and a row of bricks on either side of the walkway, in the same color as the house bricks. Eliminating the two mound bushes closest on either side of the front door will open the space and the entry view. Some lower plantings in yellows and oranges and reds in front of all the bushes will really bring the house to life.

In the fall you can fill the iron pots with fall flowers (more rusts and golds) and some bittersweet, perhaps some fall foliage.

I like the original the best. I think if you want a color change go with a navy or dark gray. Your house is beautiful! I would stick with a darker color.

Whatever you do, I think you'll need to tie it into the rest with flowers, colorful pots, larger hardware, maybe a seasonal flag -- something... In the sample pictures, the door just looked lonely.

My vote is for none of your options. I think they either clash with your brick color or just seem unrelated to the rest of the house. My immediate thought for an alternative was a hunter or other darkish green....at which point comments by some other posters about your original choice registered, and I realized that you had in fact had a dark green. Now, my suggestion is to find a green that is as close to the color of the boxwoods (or Japanese hollies) as you can get.

I like your original color or a muted dark color best. While I'm one to do things a bit off the wall a bright color just screws with the stately elegance of your home. If I were you I would maybe put a nice quality bench somewhere or some flowering plants if you want a change.

I am not an ID or a color expert but being "color-oversensitive", I'll "second" keeping the orginal color or going with dark gray, dark blue, or black and adding color to your landscaping. :-)

I personally love bright colored front doors, it shows there is some flair going on in the house. My favorite of the samples is the teal. I've found on my own house I have to keep the colors fairly intense to avoid looking washed out in the bright sun.

I'm all for color pop but with the tone of the brick its hard to pop of primary colors look disjointed. sorry don't mean to be a spoiler bc you worked hard on the samples

I think that a darker blue-gray would look stunning on your home. I'm not a fan of bright colors that seem out of character for a home. but I'll admit some bias against them. I was a realtor for ten years during the peak of residential construction in our area. So many neighborhoods were built with such similar styles and neutral colors... except for the brightly colored doors.

Your house is lovely and I think it would be even more so with some colorful flowers highlighting your landscaping.

Here's the front door of my previous red-bricked house. Prior to that house, I had a mauve door (hated it but didn't live there long enough to get it changed), and while driving and looking at houses, I saw the most gorgeous home with an eggplant-colored front door and fell in love. I swore my next house would have one too. And so I did:

Thank you to everyone for the thoughtful and thought-provoking answers. You've given me a lot of ideas, and pointed out areas that I could improve that I hadn't thought of.

Counting up the responses, it is pretty evenly split between staying with the original dark green (or another dark color) and changing to a sunflower/dark gold color. I also like the deeper blue posted by door1 and tracey b's eggplant door. So many choices, only one front door! It's raining here (again, and I live in an area with perpetual drought, so I should be grateful) so I won't be painting today, even though I'm anxious to bring this project to completion.

I'm going to save my final color choice for a 'reveal' thread after I'm done. Some things that I am going to do, thanks to your suggestions: get bigger pots with more colorful plantings for the front porch, possible add a bench, add much more color to the plantings in front, look into replacing the light fixture with something larger and in scale with the house, and work on my DH to try to tame and/or replace some of our overgrown shrubbery.

Again, thanks to everyone who helped me with your advice and opinions. Having fresh eyes evaluate my home really helped, and I will keep you posted!

I haven't read through all the responses, but I am just a traditional ole gal. How about a white door and put your decorating efforts into some knock your socks off wreaths to hang on your door....a wreath/decoration for every season. I'm just not a fan of these bright colors that have nothing in common with the rest of your lovely home. Sorry, just my two cents.
