St Louis Gold - tropical yellow water lily
Comments (4)Tropical waterlilies grown outside the steady 75-95f range of the tropics are usually pot luck whether they will settle in and fire up. St. Louis gold is an exception, a very reliable plant, coping better than most with the wobbly temperature range across the continent. One of those rare small varieties which are likely to fire up 10/10 times, in sun or shade. In strong sun, SLG is likely to have smaller lilypads than when grown in shade, a modest 3" in size. With half shade, more likely to be double that lilypad size. Its spread can be a very modest 2' wide set in a shallow position. Set a foot deep, the lilypad spread can be rangey 6' wide Something a bit special about SLG, besides being very robust, very heat tolerant, very cold tolerant, a tropical waterlily you can plant it out a month earlier than the usually more fickle varieties, SLG is very easy to keep over Winter, where with simply floating in water, a decent size tuber will reliably chug out several new plants ideal to plant out the following season A superb plant for a short volatile growing season Given a generous fertiliser, don't be surprised to see three to six blooms on the go at times. Vastly outperforms most other tropical waterlilies on every count...See MoreMusa basjoo in St. Louis,MO (Missouri Botanical Garden)
Comments (2)Wow, that is a nice big clump of Basjoo. I'd like to get to mobot someday, I've heard good things about it. And I'd look up that Basjoo too. Gives me hope that maybe mine here, in a suburb East of KC will someday be some nice plants. I have a friend in the bootheel of Missouri, about 200 miles South of St Louis, that I'd like to try some plants like Basjoo, Monkey Puzzle, straight Southern Magnolia, cacti and more. Although he's a good friend, he's not what you'd call a plant lover, he's more of a tree cutter than a tree planter. I mentioned a Banana in the backyard by his inground pool and some cactus in the front and his response wasn't too favorable. I can see why he might not want cactus because he has small kids, but a Banana would be ideal, and rare there. Back by the pool, in the backyard, on the South side of his house would just be ideal. Maybe its just me, I don't know, maybe I have pool and zone envy! But the plants are only 8 dollars right now! I'll just kind of show up with the plants in tow, then he can't refuse! Will...See MoreOn the way to St Louis don't miss Louisville KY
Comments (1)Thanks for all of the suggestions EO. I am not dreading the trip to Waverly near as much now that you have enlightened me to the Louisville scene. We might even leave a couple of days open to look around down there! Before the night at Waverly ,that is, In case I have a heart attack or soil myself! LOL! Comments (15)Yay, another SFG-er in STL! I decided LAST summer to make my first SFG this year. I have 2 4x4 beds, and I'm about to make another one because I don't have enough squares for everything I want to plant. (I'm south city, but I garden in the metro east. don't ask :) ) I see that you've already found what you needed, but I'll chime in in case anyone else is looking. I found the big vermiculite bags at Market Basket in Edwardsville for ~$19. I THINK I saw vermiculite at Bayers on Hampton too, but I already had mine at that point. Actually, Bayers has a lot of good stuff (like row cover and trellis netting) at a reasonable price and had great friendly help. chalkrock: I hope this isnt too late, but one of my "5 kinds of compost" was the cotton burr stuff and I really regret using it. It was not fully "broken down" and has lots of sticks and actual cotton burrs in it. It was a big disappointment in comparison to the rest of the compost I added to my mel's mix, and I can't wait until it breaks down and my beds feel like they did before I added that stuff. Sorry for the bad news. Christine...See Morehomer100_gw
