Square Tile Pattern for Whole House ? I can't decide ?

We are planning on tiling our whole home. We live in Florida. Originally we were going with 18 x 18 on a diagonal and now dh says the 20 percent more is too costly and he doesn't like the diagonal anyway and thinks it will be too busy looking. The tile we picked has veining going through it in a cream and tan.

Does anyone have tile set on the square? What do think of the pattern, do you like the look in the whole house? Do you have a photo to share with me?

I am going crazy with this remodel and just want to make a choice and be done with it. We had a tile picked out which was heavily discounted and really beautiful and now it is discontinued and there aren't enough in stock to do our home. Now we have picked another one. I am afraid to commit to laying it square since it will be in the whole house and want to be sure I'll like it before we put it down.

Any and all advice would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

our tile guys did not charge more for the running bond pattern. this gave us the "visual texture" we wanted in certain locations without the upcharge for diagonal (I know it's because of the labor involved in more cuts). see below for a comparison picture of the same tile in each pattern, one in the laundry, the other in the mechanical closet.

Hi Mairin, thanks so much for posting. I see the difference. later today I thought I might get three or four of the new tile we have chosen and bring them home and lay them out on the floor and see what they look like. So tomorrow I am going back to the store to get them. If it was only one room I would be ok, but the whole house seems like such a big decision to make and hopefully be happy with the look. Thanks again for taking the time to post your photos. I hadn't thought of the running bond pattern, that's another one for me to try and as you said isn't more dollars out the door on a tight budget.

The only decorating I've seen of yours is on RMS and it's your girls' bedroom and I absolutely love it. It is bold, brave, cheery, and very cute. How could anyone be depressed in there? When I view the second group of pictures it's like "ok, yeah, so what?" But when I view the first group with the red fridge it's like, "FUN!" Heaven knows kitchens are drudgery enough. Put some fun in there. If you ever remodel, or get bored, well, you know what they say... it's only paint. They will always sell white appliance paint. Take it outside, mask it off and spray away. Or sell it. The point is, it's not permanent. It's not fatal. Indulge yourself -- get that red fridge and all your friends will envy your moxy and will oooo and aaaah over it for years to come. Why have a house that looks like everyone else's? Where's the fun in that?

Thanks for the update, glad to hear you are liking it. Now as to grout - that's another decision. Using double-sided sticky tape, adhere leftover tile pieces to a smallish piece of plywood (or other - shouldn't be flexible). You want a smaller piece, so it can fit under your uppers and rest on the countertop. Then, mix up a small batch of your grout choice and slap on to your sample board per directions. Clean up and wait a day to let the grout color dry, then see how you like the effect. Take pictures of it in place, then chip off the pieces of tile (hammer and screwdriver) (very easy), and repeat with next grout sample if desired. If you have enough left over tile, do multiple at the same time. To give you an idea, here are some I did recently. These were just grouted.

I love the slabs you are looking at. Beth is great at this and has very good taste and knows her color schemes! I too like the tempest with the stone and cabinet choice but it has what you like best. Just because we all think it looks great does not mean you love it. Maybe you do need to look at more. Look at all of Beth's beautiful pictures. You want to be sure and you should LOVE your choice. I just went through this myself and this house we are building will most likely be my last (scary thought) so I understand where you are coming from. Get the stone that you jump at immediately and love. Maybe Beth and AJCN can fly out and come with you :)

the place we ordered from doesn't keep it in stock. We've got the sheet from where it was shipped from, so we plan to call them. There's 10 other places that sell it, tho, w/in a couple few hours of here, if need be, and I don't know if they all get them thru the place ours came from or I would assume there are more warehouses or wherever. I'd think we'd have it all taken care of by May, so I think we'll be good. And if not, we'll figure it out then! Nice we don't have a big house-it was like 4 and a partial boxes to do the pantry.
