oiling butcher block question?

I'd like input on what to do with a piece of my counter which is butcher block (but not used for cutting - it's just a section of my counter) and which I have just sanded down. When I put it in 7+ years ago I did nothing to it and in the meantime people have put: hot pans/ wet stuff/oily stuff on it and it was a bit unsightly. Now it looks lovely and the rings and stains are out and I think that oiling it is what is supposed to be done but am not sure. Canola/veg oil? I can make sure that hot and wet stuff doesn't sit on it from here on out.

thanks for advice!!

Deborah
