Landscaping Q- yor opinion needed

I know this is the decorating forum, but my question is about aesthetics, not gardening advice, so I'd love to hear your opinions. We have a traditional 1950's Cape Cod style house, very symmetrical ,center front entrance and walk. The front porch was flanked on either side by overgrown rhododendrons. Last fall, we pruned them down to the ground, on the advice of our landscaper, who said they would grow back thick and beautiful. Well, all we've got now are dead stumps and an empty space on either side of the door. I'm not upset, because I always hated the rhodies, but we need something there. I'm considering spiral cut evergreens instead of a flowering shrub. I've seen some that I thought looked both whimsical and elegant. Do you agree, or do you think spiral cut trees are an ill-advised trend? Are they hard to maintain in their proper shape? Are they bound to look like ** in five years?
