which Jandy pool pump is best for my pool

Pool is 15000 gallons We are using the Polaris 360. No spa, no water features, fastlane swim system and electric coverstar cover. We are putting in a gas heater and that is another problem as the PB wants to put in the Jandy LD400 and Jandy has suggested the legacy 250. Now about the pump.

Our PB uses Jandy products and wants to put in a 2 hp stealth pump. I phoned Jandy and they suggested we ask for the two speed.

Is 2 hp the correct size for my pool? Will I need some type of a controller or can I set the pump without one. My build does include a time clock. I am a newbie and have never had a pool before so this is difficult and I really need some help. My email is sharon2975@aol.com if you want to contact me. Thanks ever so much in advance.

I agree on a 2 speed, but you don't need a 2 speed 2hp, instead I would look at a 2 speed 1 hp.

as far as I can tell the stealth only comes in 1 1/2 or 2 hp. also will I need a special controller to run this or will it work off my time clock?

These days there are a lot of good companies making swimming pool heat pumps. In most of the country they cost so much less than gas heaters to run and most of them are made out of titaniun so you don't have to worry about chemicals. Some of my favorites have better warranties in some states and some work better in colder temperatures, so it depends where you live. I like heaters from companies that have been around for at least 20 years and have long warranties. Make sure you know what country your heater is made in and also if they have a good reputation of having them serviced. You can Google the name of the manufacturer and then 'problems' or some other negitive term to see what people are saying. If I know where you lived I would feel more comfortable recomending certain brands. Pool size, where you live, the months you want to swim, if you have a spa, if you use a blanket at night are all important for your heat pump choice. Here is a link that might be useful: Home Site

The Pentair 4x160 is now known as the VS3050. The waterfall pump will need a 1 speed pump. The best pump can't be stated yet since we don't know enough about the waterfall's demand. It may be a 3/4 HP or it may need a 2 HP or more. If you build a 50 ton set of falls, I can guarantee a 3/4 HP would not do it for you. The pool and sweep can be run by the VS3050. The spa can run off it too, up to 8 similar jets at the same hight. Additional jets or jets on different levels should be on an additional pump. Scott

Our roof is about 25 feet high. We'd originally installed the 3.2 kw - but had trouble with our solar panels (Heliocol) being self draining and having variable pressure in the system during start up - the pump was VERY sensitive to this and would shut off. Pentair was fantastic and really worked with us to try to get the pump to work - in the end it didn't and we swapped it for the 4x160. We have the Intellitouch control system so we do have "max" control over this pump (ie we can use more than the standard programs for flows) and have been very pleased with it's performance - both running our pool and from an energy efficeincy standpoint. Our biggest disappointment was paying for the more expensive pump...since we weren't able to get that refunded to us (about $300 different on a wholesale basis). Pentair has assured me that not all solar set-ups have this problem - so you may be fine with the 3.2 kw - but doing it again I'd be perfectly happy putting in the 4x160 - provided you have the control system. (We have our pump set up to run the solar, pool filtration and two circuits of water features - and have been able to manage all of that just fine).

Your builder is more than likely going to use an Intermatic T104 time clock. You can switch this out to a T106 instead, which will turn on the high speed, then you can just leave the low speed on 24/7 and have a switch inside the mechanical room for servicing.

There is a 2 speed 1 hp pump. The Model number is SHPF1.0-2. There is no reason for you to have a lager pump than that on your pool.

will this pump be correct if we go with the LD400 heater? and will it work for our Polaris 360? Just want to make sure I understand this all as I want the correct answer for my PB tomorrow when we discuss this. Thanks ever so much.

On low speed it should On high speed yes, but I am still not quite sure why you need/want an LD400 on your pool. \

You need 40 gpm to run the heater on a 400k, and 25 on a 250k. So there is some benefit to downsizing the heater.

You will also need a smaller gas line ran to the mechanical area, as well you may not have to upsize the gas meter. I can guarantee you that your gas meter is more than likely too small for a 400k heater plus the load of the house.

I am not pushing for the LD400 but have not spoken to my PB yet, he should be here in the morning. I am leaning toward the Legacy 250 as this is what the tech guy at Jandy suggested and I hope our meter will work for that. So what you are saying is that with the Legacy 250 and our Polaris and cartridge filter the two speed one hp pump will be the best solution for us. Do I have this correct? Thanks so much.

I am not a big fan of the 360, I feel that pressure cleaners that do not have their own booster pump, tend not to work as reliably as ones that do. That being said, the Jandy 1hp pump's flow according to it's pump curve will be sufficient for a 360.

The polaris 480,3900s,380,280,180 all require a separate booster pump.

You have the same problem that so many pool owners fall into. That 2HP pump is waaaaay too big for your pool. You could easily get away with an efficient 1/2 horsepower model based on your pool volume, if not a 2 speed pump in the 3/4hp to 1 hp range. If nobody has mentioned variable speed pumps to you yet then you need to research that before you go any further as they will pay for themselves over time in electrical savings. To properly size your pump you need a pump that can turn over your pool water volume up to 3x per 24 hours. This means that you need a pump that can move 45,000 gallons per day. That Jandy Stealth could, at least in theory, move 225,000 gallons per day. See how this is way too much for what you need? Use a JEP-2 which is a 2HP variable speed pump. This way you can control how much electricity you use based on the speed that you also choose.
