3 Favorite Mom memories

I heard the hymn In the Garden this morning and cried like a baby. Number one on my list of memories is:

1) Hearing my Mom and Dad sing this song, plus others, while we were riding in the car.

2) Watching my Mom knead bread. I would start 'smelling' the finished product already.

3) Having her read to us as she rocked the youngest child.

Anyone have some of their favorites to share?

My mom made the most delicious chocolate cakes that I have ever tasted! My sisters and I have never been able to duplicate it! Her favorite saying was "There's no excuse for nastiness. Water is free and soap is cheap!" Of course, that is far from true now, but the concept still applies. I remember the tenderness and compassion she showed for the sick or injured and her readiness to help wherever she was needed. After over 25 years, I still miss her!

1.I had tried out for color guard and I was the only one that didn't make it. Mom made me go to school the next day when all I wanted to do was stay home and cry. Well we were barely into 1st period when II was called to the office, there standing in the office was Mom, she checked me out. When we got in the car, she said she knew how bad I was hurting and that I had faced the other kids at school, so I could come home and cry it out.

2. I got invited on my first date and it was to the opera. We were going with his parents. and I needed a long dress. Mom sewed like a pro. In one day she made me a beautiful long dress with a matching shawl. I felt beautiful.

3. The look on her face when she saw Sam for the first time. He was 2 days old. And then she proceeded to to "hog" him the whole time they were there.

When I was growing up in the 1950s, my friends and I had a favorite 'hangout spot' at a nearby corner. The house on that corner belonged to the Goldberg family, who had twin girls. Mr & Mrs Goldberg were very strict and wouldn't allow the girls to play with us (apologies here for being politically incorrect, but the reason was that girls weren't allowed to play with non-Jewish children... and none of our group was Jewish, in fact the Goldbergs were the only such family on our street so we rarely even saw the girls outdoors... I know it sounds awful but remember, this was the '50s). But right at that corner of their front yard was a group of HUGE honeysuckle bushes. They were the only honeysuckles on our street, and they smelled SOOO wonderful! We'd 'taste' them too, as we'd sit on the curb at the corner, hang out, and wait for whoever else in our group of friends would be able to come out and play. The great thing about that corner was that everyone could see it from their house, so you'd know just by looking out your window who was outside and who wasn't. This became especially important to us gals as we got a little older and wanted to see if a particular boy was there yet or not! ;-) The sad part, though, was that every so often we'd see one of the Goldberg girls watching us through a window and you could tell she was just dying to come out and play with us but "wasn't allowed". To this day, whenever I smell honeysuckle it takes me right back to those summer days, evenings, and nights growing up with my childhood friends. I was so thrilled to find honeysuckle already growing in the yard of the house I recently bought!

I didn't know my paternal grandparents. My grandpa died several years before I was born, and my grandma when I was a baby. I did know my maternal grandparents and have lots of memories. They loved to garden. The house that I remember them living in most of my life had the yard totally surrounded by mostly peonies and iris', but also tulips, ferns, and a bed of old fashioned mixed perennials. They also had a vegetable garden and a row of gooseberry bushes. I think this is where my love of gardening comes from :-) Grandpa played Slap Jack with us kids. If you don't know what that is, it's a card game where the dealer turns over one card at a time. Everyone stays ready, and if the card is a Jack, tries to 'slap' it. The person who slaps it first, wins the pile of cards. The person who wins the most cards, wins the game! Grandma made jam out of ripe gooseberries. She's the only person I ever knew who did anything with them other then make green gooseberry pie. Her cooking specialties were applesauce cake and divinity, which she made in HUGE amounts every Christmas season. She made them for all the kids (6) and grandkids (17) but not the greats (30+) every year. She'd stir up a huge batch of cake. She used applesauce as one of the 'wet' ingredients, but if she didn't have enough applesauce it didn't matter. She's just substitute some canned pears, or maybe even some tomato juice. Didn't matter what she used, it always ended up tasting like applesauce cake and was always good. And then after she poured out enough cakes from her batch of batter, she'd start adding more flour and would end up with a batch of applesauce cookies too! My mom was born in 1917 weighing only a little over 2 pounds. She was born at home and it was a miracle she lived, back in those days. I remember Grandma telling how she was up, holding on to the back of a chair, and sweeping the kitchen when Mom was only a week old. Someone stopped to visit and told her she was going to regret doing that. Grandma was in her upper 70s or maybe 80s when she was telling this story. I remember her saying she was still waiting to see when she was going to regret it!!! Grandma collected salt and pepper shakers, so she always received a lot of them as gifts. She used to put the name of the person who gave her a gift on the bottom of the item, saying 'you'll get this back some day'. We, being young, would say 'Oh Grandma...' and she'd say 'Well, I'm gonna die someday, you know!' Grandpa had emphysema. He smoked only briefly, as a young man, but somehow he ended up with emphysema. He was on oxygen full time, and confined to bed when I was in my last years of high school. When I married, at 18, he decided he was going to get himself well enough to 'walk' me down the aisle. He did it too! My mom pushed him, in his wheelchair, oxygen tank and all, and he walked me into the church and down the aisle! What a miracle! There are so many stories, but I'll stop here. I loved my Grandma and Grandpa. I still do.

We didn't have big birthdays either. But one stands out in my mind and still makes me tear up. I must have been 8 that year and my birthday gift was a new pair of school shoes. My mother picked out the most godawful blood red oxfords with argyle plaid laces. Man, those were ugly shoes. I wanted saddle oxfords like my older sisters had. My father's birthday was the day before mine so I never had my own cake. Every year mother made an angel food cake with white icing and that was the cake for both of us. I did get to pick the menu and it was always fried chicken. Sometimes I asked for fried chicken AND chicken and noodles. Now that meal would still make me forget I never had my own cake. Anyway, the year of the shoes, we were watching TV--a new novelty in our home. Back then we watched TV with all the lights off. Don't know if that was the norm, but that's what we did. I kept seeing those ugly shoes in the TV light and I just started crying. Very softly so nobody'd see me. But my dad did. He sat me on his lap and started telling me how neat me new shoes were. Well, I gave it my best try of acting happy about them. Then he got up, went out in the kitchen and was gone for a while. I was beginning to feel better about the shoes when he came in the living room with a bag from the drug store. He'd gone out, walked the 5 blocks downtown and to the only store open and bought me two new sets of paper dolls and a few other little things. I felt so guilty for being a baby about the shoes and somehow I just knew that was probably his lunch money for the week. It's not a happy memory, but that's how much daddy loved us. And that part is a happy memory.

1. My Mom's favorite saying "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything." I still try to live by that.

2. My Mom standing on table with a big broom and bigger scream,swatting at a crab on our porch. I can't see a crab today without smiling.

3. The love she had for her children. I wish she could have lived to be with her grandchildren. She met the first one,and passed just before the second one was born.

Here's one:

I was about eight. I had been very sick -- so sick I was in my mother's bed so she could catch a rise in fever at night. My spirits were very low.

One morning my mother woke me with a breakfast tray of toast and tea. The teacup was upside down over the saucer. When I lifted the cup, there was a fledgling robin looking at me with his bright little eyes! Mom had found him, stunned, in our back yard. The robin and I had a few seconds to stare at one another before he revived and started to fly around the bedroom. Mom opened the door to the deck above the screened porch, and out he went.

Things happen, and then...life goes on.

My mom has been gone for 17 years and I still miss her terribly. But I do have my memories.
1.) Many hands make light work. In fact, we just got back from my sister's house helping her clean up the place to get ready for graduation. We will go there again next weekend. The weekend of the grad party, we all plan to do something. My sister's husband recently died and as you can imagine, she is overwhelmed.
2.) Remember to keep the faith and hope always. You might think the situation is helpless but she taught me it usually gets better (or you learn to appreciate your struggles.)
3.) Remember to have some fun. That's a good reminder for all of us.

My mom loved the hymn In The Garden, too.
Lots of memories of my mom.....she died when I was 29.
I remember her braiding my hair so tight every morning.....and the dresses she made. And the lunches she packed everyday.
I remember her putting her cool hand on my forehead and turning over the pillow when I was sick.
I remember her always working in her garden. She grew beautiful flowers, even in hot, dry Bakersfield.
And the cookies......and the canning in the summer with her apron on and sweat on her brow.
Sorry....but I couldn't just write down three.

My mom died in 1976 and I still miss her. Everyone came to my mom for advice. She knew no strangers. She loved people and animals.

Mom loved crafting. She would love this computer age and all of the ideas out there.

Many evenings my dad would ask Mom if "Dolly's Diner" was open....meaning he would like a snack and she would make something for us.
