Months of the year motifs?

I've been thinking about making a quilt with a block for each month of the year and I wanted to pick your brains for ideas for motifs to use. I like to have holidays represented, but also other ideas especially when there's no holiday associated with the month.

January: Snowflake, snowman

February: Hearts

March: Shamrocks

April: umbrellas (for showers)

May: Flowers

June: ????

July: Flag, Fireworks, Patriotic

August: ???

September: ???? apple for the teacher or back to school?

October: Pumpkin, black cat, ghost, etc for Halloween

November: Fall leaves, turkeys, Thanksgiving

December: Christmas ornament, stocking, tree, Santa etc.

Any other ideas, especially for June, August and September?

Amy, This might not help much but for June, there's a bride and baseball. For August, there's camping or a seashore scene and for September, I like a school bus. HTH.

June could be...Picnic, beaches or swimming, weddings, of course! Father's day

May could have Mother's day.

August.. Fair days or vacation time.

Sounds like a really cute idea.

Oh, Rachel, I'm so sorry. It sounds like things are going from bad to worse for kittygirl. The only other thing I can think to recommend is to get her to a university vet school clinic, if possible. That's where you'll find a lot of veterinary specialists and specialized diagnostic equipment under one roof. If a definitive diagnosis and effective treatment plan can be established, that's where it's most likely to happen. Please keep us updated. I wish you and kittygirl the best possible outcome. Laurie

I have Nandina in my North strip. It is true that late in the day they they get some sun. Even so, I choose to plant with thinking a northern exposure in mind. I think Lavender needs more sun than it will receive close to the house. Could you plant it about three feet from the house? I had Teucrium for awhile in front of my Nandina but I don't think it liked the boron in our soil. I also have some Vinca underneath the Nandia. I would not say it is thriving as I completely ignore it. Still, it remains there and sometimes blooms. Any time I have a difficult situation I use Nandina to solve it. I know it is a pest in some areas but there are really not that many plants that can take shade with an hour or two of hot California sun.

If the OP was the landlord CoolAir missed another point beyond the OP was last year and that is IF the tenant pays. It can cost a whole lot to evict in some areas if you can evict. The if is being found out in many areas this year.

I was thinking beaches, flip flops, beach umbrellas & blankets, fishing for August or June.

September is back to school, buses, apples, pencils, slates w/letters, ABCs, blocks.

A Sunbonnet Sue under that April umbrella sure would be cute!
June could be a bride and groom or a bride's bouquet. I like the beach theme for August and you could add some sea shells/star fish. Back to school could be a stack of three books with a red apple on top.

Amy, I like your idea and it will probably depend on what state you live in and what your customs are. Our schools have been starting in August for years and we're still doing the beach thing in Sept. We also have Strawberry Festivals in February/March. I think that whatever happens in your part of the world is what you should put in that months block.

Some more thoughts.

June- graduation cap
August- Grandmother fan (it's HOT)
September- Is it too early for leaves to turn? Maybe a colored leaf or school theme.

Sharon, I agree with you that it depends on where you live. I'm in SoCal, so summer months mean dolphins and ocean swimming for me, and though I love snowflakes never see one here in January. But as for seasons in SoCal, I don't think I'd want to do a quilt with Draught, Fires, El Nino and Santa Ana winds, which is the closest we have to 4 seasons :-). --Amy

Here's a few more ideas. Be sure to let us know what your final choices are. This sounds like a neat quilt. :)

January - mittens, melted AZ snowman (that's what we had this year)
June - BUGS! And lots of them! LOL....or wedding rings, beach things...
August - blazing SUN...moquitoes....
September - apple basket - are they still in season?
November - corucopia
December - gingerbread cookie, Nativity

June is traditionally WEDDING Month...so how about a Bridal Bouquet? It is also my Birthday and the flower is Rose. Just happened that my Grandmother named me after herself (Rose) and the month, so I became June Rose. Oh how I hated tht name when I was a kid. But it is unique.

Apples are ready in the fall. An apple tree would be cute, as well as leaves falling from a tree for September. August - I would definitely go for the beach scene. And I agree with June being the wedding month.

Every new year I buy a very pretty calendar. I spend alot of time choosing the right one. Usually it's country scenes or quilting scenes, waterfalls, etc. I have saved them all in the hopes that I will find something nice to do with all of those really pretty pictures - maybe frame them for my sewing room or decoupage them onto something. BUT copying and printing them onto fabric for a months of the year quilt sounds excellent! Or making them into seasonal placemats! Or tablerunners! Or potholders! I'm on a roll!
Off to dig out those calendars!...

I would use a sun motif for June and a beach-type thing for August. What a fun quilt this will be.
