Confused about EZ Touch and Colorlogic LED Combo

See Deeker's post in the attached link (from Dec 2006)

- Deeker said EZ Touch will turn ColorLogic lights on/off, but will not control the color changing

- PB assures me that EZ Touch will control the color changing

Maybe Pentair upated their system since Dec 2006. Anyone have first hand experience with using the EZ Touch system to control the color changing feature of ColorLogic lights?

EasyTouch can control the ColorLogic lights - it is just a manual process. Let's say the ColorLogic light is assigned to AUX3. You would have to press AUX3 x number of times on the outdoor, indoor, or wireless remote to get the desired color or color show to start. This is instead of pressing one button that would go to the color or color show automatically. Not a big deal really as you will probably take a few days to find a color or show that you like and from that point on, when the light turns on, it should go to that color (the last one you were viewing the previous day).

My ez touch works fine (maybe great) with my colorlogics. To cycle programs and/or colors, you just turn it on/off.... which I think is exactly what the colorlogic instructions say to do.

If you are having an installition tech do the install, he will undoubtedly, cut out the back of the cabinet. I installed into a 27" standard oven cabinet. and so I had close tolerances and careful front surgery to do on the cabinet. Installing into the larger cabinet should be easier for your tech. I was doing the install myself, and when I encountered the depth issue, I called a carpenter friend that does a lot of kitchen installs. I asked him how often he has this kind of problem and what he does about it. He told me that it happens about half the time, and he just starts cutting the back until he gets enough space. If cutting the back panel isn't enough, he said that he just "starts hacking the drywall away" until he gets enough space. I had enough depth after I cut a sizeable piece out of the back panel. It amazes me that the appliance manuf. don't design to the standard cabinet size spec, and don't warn you that this could happen. I had a real sinking feeling, when I first realized that it was not going to fit into the cabinet. It turns out that cutting the back panel does not compromize the structural integrity of the cabinet. BTW, I installed into Thomasville cabinets. But I did check other brands of cabinets, and it was going to be a problem in all of them. If you were concerned about oven size, why didn't you get a 30" oven? That is monstous inside. I could not fit a 30" cabinet in, but I would have preferred to have the 30". Goodluck Carguy

Jmith, Everyone loads varies from type of fabrics to water temperatures. My loads is all over the place where I can wash my king size flat/fitted and 4 king pillow case with a king size fleece cover in one load to two bathroom mats in one load. Weighing fabrics does nothing but causes extra unnecessary step in doing laundry. Once you do several large or extra large load, the machine will let you how much you can fill the machine without over loading. If anybody over load this machine will notice how long it take for the load to balance for the spin cycle! I'm a older WT Lux user......

Please bear in mind that many of the builders that frequent this board are busy building. They will probably respond but it will take some time. Many of the people that post here also post at TFP too, myself included. If your pool is already walled, backfilled and decked, the fact that you have a Hayward light niche and sand filter already pretty much makes the continuance of the Hayward equipment for the sake of continuity and integration a simpler path. The additional warranty is a bonus as is the fact that it will likely cost you less. I hope you weren't stung too badly by the PB's actions that lead to his conviction. If the pool has not been decked yet, it may be possible to change the niche but I don't know if the the mounting holes will line up. I have never had to replace a niche. Adding an addition hole for another niche with a steel walled pool might require an replacement wall panel. That will likely cost you a liner too. The additional fixture and niche is what costs, daisy chaining the power is usually pretty simple if the deck boxes and near each other. Without the decking, increasing the pipe sizes is easier, regardless of the pump. Slower moving water = less friction loss which begets lower energy costs and also improves safety, especially at the suction outlets. While the returns will be smaller, especially with eyeball return fittings in place, feeding them with bigger pipes is beneficial. A 2" pipe can move twice the water at a given velocity that a 1.5" pipe can. Slower moving water through the pipes is less energy lost due to friction. WRT to whether the Hayward vs Pentair filter is better, I personally feel that the Pentair Tagelus is a better top mounted sand filter. The parts it's made from are stronger. A simple example the is easy to see is the stand pipe takes the filtered water from the bottom of the sand bed to the multiport. The Hayward uses a much thinner plastic pipe that is known to crack, leaking sand back into the pool. The Pentair uses pressure rated Schedule 40 pipe, a MUCH stronger material that doesn't crack. The Pentair Tagelus 100D, equivalent to the S310T 500 lb. filter, has a slightly larger sand bed. Pentair's multiports, in my experience, tend to last longer before needing attention/servicing. I am not a big fan of the Tri-Star series but that's what Hayward uses for their variable speed pumps. IMHO, a 3/4 HP Super Pump will give you the flow you need for filtering and backwashing. A simple Intermatic timer set(one for the pool pump, one for the pool sweep booster) is all the automation you need. The light is easily turned on and off with a switch. Changing to a LED fixture will not light the pool effectively with only one fixture. There just aren't enough lumens. Adding fixtures is a very expensive proposition. If it's what you want and are prepared to pay for it, great, but taking apart a pool to change a wall panel isn't an easy task. If the deck is poured, you'll lose the deck too. The addition of an automation controller and variable speed pump is an expensive eye candy set of additions that for your pool, are unlikely to be a cost effective, problem solving set of additions that would, in the long run, make repairs more likely and more expensive. Yes, the variable speed pump would save you on energy costs, but I don't think to the tune of the additional initial costs. If you decide against changing the plumbing size, you must remember to set the speeds/ flows down so they don't exceed 75 gallons per minute or you will starve the pump of water. This will cause a condition called cavitation where the impeller of the pump is spinning but not moving as much water as it was designed to a given speed, wasting energy and generating vibration at the shaft, increasing wear and tear on the pump's bearing, seals, and motor shaft that will reduce it's life expectancy. It will also run louder. The communications from Brand A's controller is different than the communications link from Brand B's pump. While Pentair offers the Intellicom II to help with Pentair's variable speed pumps, it cost's the non Easy Touch/Intelli-Touch controllers expensive relays and limits you to 4 speeds. It makes more sense to match the controller and pump manufacturers on a new installation. A two speed pump with any of the the major controllers is not a problem. They are all similar in how they control the pump and how the pump's speeds are selected which allows interoperability between the brands. The controller need to be configured with a two speed relay, both physically and in it's programming. Since you don't have a south facing roof, I think solar will be of very limited use and would be an expensive disappointment. A heat pump with a solar cover is likely to be more effective and offers a more economical way to heat your pool over a gas fired heater. If the pool is too hot, there are versions that can cool the pool too. If the pool has a return port installed already for an auto filler to be connected, the Letro will be fine. It's not something you can just add to an already constructed pool without going through a similar set of efforts needed for adding a niche. Better is a subjective term. WRT which salt cell I think is better designed, I prefer the Intellichlor because it's electronics are on the cell, not in with the power supply. This offers two significant advantages. The first is at replacement cell time, you get new electronics. The second is the heat in a power supply cabinet will shorten the life of the control board of the other brands of cells. Pentair also offers a larger available unit that will last longer than the Hayward. If you go with a gas fired heater, it should be a 400K BTU unit. How the gas company feeds their meter is their problem. Heaters, funaces, stoves, etc... require a substantially lower pressure but consistent volume after the meter to function correctly. In order to supply the volume a pool heater needs at the lower gas pressure a residential device needs, the pipe size needs to increase. The added size adds a steadying buffer for the pressure as other gas appliances turn on and off. The heater's regulator is a 3/4" line. The shorter the length of pipe @ 3/4", the better. A 400K BTU heater needs at least a 1.5" supply run before it's reduced to the 3/4" connection. Long feed lines need 2" pipe to the meter but I don't get the impression you will need that. The person you spoke to at the gas company may have misunderstood you needs. I have never heard of a gas company having to run a separate line/meter to a residential home. I'm not saying it isn't possible, only unlikely that the existing line feeding the existing meter couldn't handle the additional load a gas fired heater would generate. That is normally just a change in the meter. Meters serve two purposes, one is to measure how much gas is used and the other is to regulate the pressure to the customer's plumbing. Given the information you have shared, I suspect that my replies will give you plenty to think about and will save you some money. Think about the wants/needs/haves ratios and the constraints I have mentioned. If my understandings are correct, you will find my suggestions reasonable. Best Of Luck; Scott

Lets define a few things.... Macro = several things going on with one button. Yes, this can be a light and other things. A ColorLogic will work on any system and yes, you change them as well as sync them by power interruption as follows. OPERATING THE LIGHT Your Hayward ColorLogic light is operated through power-cycling: a method of changing modes which requires no special controller or interface. To activate the light, simply turn on the switch. To deactivate the light, turn off the switch. To advance to the next program, turn the switch off, then back on within 10 seconds. Whenever the light has been off for over 60 seconds, and is first turned on, it will come on to white for 15 seconds for quick clear view of your pool, then go to the last fixed color or color show it was running. LIGHT SYNCHRONIZATION If your pool or spa has multiple Hayward ColorLogic LED lights, they may be operated independently, or they can be easily synchronized so they will all display the same colors and shows at the same time. For light synchronization, all lights must be wired to the same switch. Once installed, all lights should be automatically synchronized, however, if they get out of sync, they can be re-synchronized easily. To re-synchronize your lights, turn the switch on, then back off, then wait between 11 and 14 seconds and turn the switch back on. When the lights come back on, they should enter program #1, and be synchronized. You are trying to access the color swim and color sync features of the IT which will not work with these lights. The color options on these lights on Pentair automation are done by power interruption. This is the same reason people avoided IntelliBrites on the earlier versions of the EasyTouch. Too much work. The IT will allow you to address any color or light program on a Pentair light.

gorilla x - My guess is that Pentair has probably revised their controller since Dec'06 to be compatible with the Hayward colorlogic lights. This is purely speculation, but I know for a fact that Jandy released a new revision 3 PPD for their controllers in July that has full control over the colorlogics and all the lighting scenes included with this pool light (i.e., mardi gras, USA, voodoo lounge, etc.)

Pentair should be able to provide an answer on complete control of the colorlogics with a phone call to their tech support.

I contacted Pentair... here is my question, and their response...

I am interested in the IntelliBrite LED lights and the EZ Touch system.

Example: I'd like be able to press 1 button on the EZ Touch wireless to change from blue to green, etc. I do not want to have to press the remote's button multiple times to toggle the LED power to change light colors.

Can the EZ Touch system provide 1-button control of the LED lights?

I am sorry, but the EZ TOuch can not be programmed that way. The light has to cycle through the color scheme also. Please contact us again if you have further questions or comments.

I have the IntelliBrite LED lights and the EZ Touch system. Only for a few days that is why I am here looking for answers. I have been playing around turning on and off the lights and it seems to do diff speeds and colors (changing or constant) and even the special shows (red, white, blue) ECT... looking for a sheet that tells me how many times to turn on and off to get the results I am looking for like make the light stay on one constant color or changing colors with speed.
ALSO
Is this bad for the system and or the lights? What can I expect?

What everyone needs to realize is that when you purchase the IntelliBrite, you are buying Pentair's most advanced light. You will only get the benefits of this light when you purchase the most advanced automation. That is the IntelliTouch, not EasyTouch. EasyTouch is meant to be an entry level into automation. Once considered highe end, the SAM/SAL lights are now less than the IntelliBrite.

Go to the Pentair website under lighting, IntelliBrite and there you will find the toggle sequences.

All Pentair automation allows the "sync" feature on multiple lights. With ET or IT, you simply set sync and multiple lights will change to the same color provided they are on their own relays.

EasyTouch will not sync an IntelliBrite but it will a SAM/SAL. IntelliTouch will will allow the advanced features of IntelliBrite to be used but EasyTouch will not.

Example, multiple lights can be used in the color set mode(each light on its own color with one button push)or the color swim mode (each light blending colors across the pool). The color set/swim is only available on the +3 versions of the IntelliTouch.

With EasyTouch, you must toggle to get the various colors. Once you find something yuo like, you can use the hold/recall option. It's a ridiculous amount of switching but that's the case w/o IntelliTouch.

2. Party Mode: Rapid color changing building energy and excitement.
3. Romance Mode: Slow color transitions creating a mesmerizing and calming effect.
4. Caribbean Mode: Transitions between a variety of blues and greens.
5. American Mode: Patriotic red, white and blue transition.
6. California Sunset Mode: Dramatic transitions of orange, red and magenta tones.
7. Royal Mode: Richer, deeper color tones.
8. Blue: Fixed color.
9. Green: Fixed color.
1. Red: Fixed color.
2. White: Fixed color.
3. Magenta: Fixed color.
4. Hold: Save the current color effect during a color light show.
5. Recall: Activate the last saved color effect.

I was looking in the manual for the Easy Touch not the lights.

Maybe I am doing something wrong with the Easy Touch the light settings are off, on, or sync. When I select sync nothing seems to happen, same if I select lights on. It seems to me the menu will control nothing as far as lighting is concerned. I did not ask enough questions I guess. I have never even heard intelli touch before reading in the forms how much more is that system? I am guessing I should have bought an intelli flow pump as well everyone seems to like and recommend them. I am happy with my pool and equipment looks great and canÂt wait for summer. I canÂt believe I said that living in phoenix.

Are the lights AUX relays set to lights on circuit types?

From the manual:
Make sure the AUX relay circuits which control your lighting have been assigned names. Then verify that
SAm and/or SAL, and/or FIBERworks have been set up in "Circuit Types" as SAM or SAL lights. If
FIBERworks lighting is incorporated, it also has to be set up as a "PHOTON GENERATOR" for the circuit
controlling the light bulb, and COLOR WHEEL for the circuit controlling the color wheel. For more
information about setting up lights, see "Settings Menu: Circuit Types," on page 29.

FYI on Intellibrite lights and EZ Touch.
Issue is memory space on the EZ Touch to display all light features of the Intellibrite. Therefore todays model is push the button XYZ number of times to get to the color or color feature you desire.
This is changing and EZ Touch is already being tested in the field to display all combinations of lighting on the controller.

When should we expect the newer version Easytouch to be available to the market/ homeowner. Our pool should be complete around mid January and would hold out for the updated system if available by then.

Wish I had better news but the EZ Touch unit with IntelliBright light colors displayed will not be ready until at least February. Units are out in the field being tested right now. Amongst many other procedures on new products to help eliminate infield issues all new products must spend time in the field during development.
The upgrade to the EZ Touch is complex and not an upgrade that can be added to existing units. The upgrade involves boards on wireless units, boards on indoor controllers as well as power center boards.

Since I am close to a contract and had the ET8 in my bid, I contacted Pentair... but they had the same information Deek posted.

So I'll go with IntelliBrite LEDs, and install the new ET8 after the upgraded unit hits the street. That whole "click a button a million times" routine was a big sticking point for me... but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Have you received a quote on the IntelliTouch i7+3? Short of the cost for the load center and controller (about $500)it's pretty comparable to the ET8 and it will run the lights. I'm guessing to retrofit an ET8 on an existing pad is going to run that much more in labor.....
