In my teeny bathroom I tried that. I did not want to damage the vintage tiles by drilling into them. It has always been common to have a hook in a bathroom door for a robe or something, so what difference would a towel bar make, right?

I found that the towels could not dry properly and got smelly. My door opened against a wall though, and the door is left open to let the steam out and for convenience, unless there are guests over. If you keep the door closed all the time or there is no wall behind an open door so that air cannot circulate it may be fine.

Speaking of duh, I just realized I have a raised panel door so I'll have to see if I can find a bar to fit inside the raised panel. Because the door is 36", I might be able to do it. Glad to hear this is an OK practice.

browny, I thought about the drying factor and would have to keep the door closed, which I plan on doing anyway because my double windows in that bath will be so tempting for the cats and having them up there all the time, the tub and windows would get hair in them. Gee, I suppose this is another room I'll have to seal off to those fur balls. LOL

If you can't have the furballs in the bathroom, how can they share the shower with you???? Princess Posie would be so sad if she couldn't come and play in the water ;^)

I've done that and it worked well. My door opened to the tub so there was plenty of space for drying and close enough to reach from the tub. I have raised panel doors also and used an over-the-door towel rack. I think if I did it again, I'd find one that installed on the door though. This one tended to bounce when the door was opened quickly.

This is not the back of the door, but we use hangers instead of bars. The towels dry much faster. Another tip...try to hang towels over/under an air duct.

I would wonder about the towels drying on the door also. But if you are going to leave it closed, I suppose it would work. We have a robe hook on the back of our MB, but the door is always open, mine is close enough the the wall that towels would not dry on it quickly.

We are able to hang towels inside our large linen closet. Hubby fixed hook thingies from the edge of the shelves. That way the towels are allowed to hang straight down - from end to end - and as NHB suggested, they hang over an airduct. They dry very quickly that way. I like the hook on wall idea also but the towel is going to touch against the wall at some point - does anyone ever have a problem with spots/discoloration, etc. behind where the towels hang?

Just my personal opinion, but the idea of towels on a door doesn't really resonate with me. It's not a terrible faux pas, but it just doesn't seem appropriate somehow. More something you would do when you have no other choice than anything else.

I like hooks for bath towels on the back of doors, they dry well and look good; make them bathsheets and monogrammed, even better.

We have a decorative over-the-door rack with hooks as well... similar to this one. We also didn't plan well with regards to the towel racks when our house was built...

when we redid all 4 bathrooms I had NO towel racks...nada. Towels always "smell" if they are left to dry. The only exception are all white that are bleached regularly. So my solution , and it has worked perfectly for 7 years, is heated freestanding towel racks. I will never go back to air dry. Of course we are in the "South" so that is a major factor, but I want towels dry asap. I wash QOD anyway but my towels have lasted better than ever before and I belive it is due to fast hot drying. c

Thanks everyone for your responses. This thread has definitely been a learning experience. I didn't realize that towels actually can dry fast when hanging from hooks. I always thought bars were better, but I stand enlightened.

trailrunner, that is quite an idea, the freestanding towel warmer. Never considered that one. Something else to think about though.

We use only white towels and yes, they are bleached with every washing. I'm a nut about hot water and bleach. So anti environment I know. LOL Don't mean to be, just feel like this is the most sanitary way to wash bath linens.

As a child we had hooks behind every door in the house. I think over the years people moved away from that for many reasons and one being the invention of a hollow core door.

Hooks can be safely installed in hollow doors with the proper anchors, that is not a problem. My designer reminded me that men like to remove their jackets before using the washroom, I had never thought of that, it's nice to have the hook in the powder room.

You know Mitch, that makes perfect sense to have a hook, if not for anything else, except for the guest using the room. I know hooks can be anchored to hollow core, just thought being hollow core people are less likely to try to nail anything on it. At least I would be.

Wet towels, the State House under water, the dog needing to 'go' and house all closed up praying that we will not have another flood, towels dirty for 12 hours, the whole house stinks. I am a good housekeeper but this house just stinks with cats, their litter dogs who are wet, wet towels, windows closed, no air circulating and no power. Not going to do anything but wash as soon as the power came on and it did and I washed, and the sun came out and the dog went out and life is good.

I just took a look and there is absolutely no sign of discoloration on my walls. I guess it wouldn't matter anyway, because the towels are always hanging on the wall and would cover anything. :)

I am sure you missed the flood we had. The news only carries the NOLA floods for PC reasons. Other areas have them too. We were ready for some rain after 8 years of drought which the media darlings missed as did everyone else since the media missed it. It's not important unless it happens in a PC area where they can use it to their advantage.

I sure did. Did you get water in your house? I know what it's like living without power for a stretch and all the hardship that goes along with it. We had no water, no electric, no toilet, no phone and standing in 4" of water. LOL, that's what it was like for us after Katrina. You can't mop or clean anything without the AC as it doesn't dry. It's awful, I know. Glad things are drying out for you.

Fortunately for NOLA, there was not 8 years of drought and then flooding that the soil could not hold even on hills, like where I live. This is our third of the year. I have had my carpet and hardwood replaced three times. I guess the newsmedia missed that as we are all responsinble and carry insurance in this area and leave when told to do so. My roses that covered arbors 8 foot tall and a pathway 55 feet are gone. The arbors are gone. The only people who care are the ones with an IQ above room temperature and they are not part of the media whose IQ is somewhere around freezing. I think Keith O's is so low, it is about like the letter of his last name, a big "O." We had tornadoes here last year that destroyed most of the businesses and homes in our area. No news media. The owners are all self-sufficient and pay their taxes and insurance. Remind me why I don't trust or believe anything I hear or see on the news.

Oh Patricia, that is awful. No, you're right, we don't normally get flooding here. The only reason I even had flooding in my home after Katrina was because the parish president (Jefferson parish) saw an opportunity to get rich so he ordered the pump operator's to vanish.

You're better than me. It would only take once of replacing flooring and I'd either be raising my house or finding another. That's why we built our new house up and way above the projected flood stage for that area. I can take wind, but that damn water can cause so much damage. Insurance does cover the heartache and backache that goes along with the flooding.

That is so sad about your prized roses too.

I had a cousin who lived on the West Bank of N.O., across the Miss. River. His house flood 13 times before the government would buy him out. It was horrible. I can't imagine redoing a house 13 times.
