Some things I've recently done

I was motivated by mary c's Quilts of Valor that we recently made blocks for - to just make a few tops myself. They were sent to a longarm quilter, then I put bindings on, labels, made presentation bags for them (pillowcases) and they are presently on their way to a military hospital. I hope a few more of us feel inclined to do this - it gives you such a good feeling!! So, here's my two latest:

I also earlier this year signed up for a challenge project our guild was having. Deadline for this was end of March, and these were exhibited at the April meeting, and judged, then will hang in libraries in our city. The challenge was: create a quilt that would please one of your favorite literary characters - and we were to use at least a 2" square of a featured fabric - a wild geometric colorful print. I chose Mary Poppins, and called it "Mary Poppins' Dream" - ("For many years Mary was expected to use a plain black umbrella to reflect her dignified responsible status as a nanny. She so longed for some gaiety and beauty in her life. In her dreams, visions of colorful, playful umbrellas filled the sky, floating majestically to the ground.") - I didn't win, but I hear the judges liked my idea, and I had loads of fun making this!

What is happening here is: We've finished one of the two trellises that we are putting up for the clematis. Still working on the other one. Getting better at routering and not breaking the bits LOL. Still taking out dead scapes. Amazing how many just aren't ready to come out easily. Found scapes on LESLIE RENEE and RASPBERRY BANANA CHEESECAKE. They are not giving up here. Bearded Iris are also blooming. Odd since they didn't bloom in the springtime. This pic was taken on October 11th and they are still blooming. Found about 10 stalks in the garden. Still having to mow the lawn when the weather cooperates. Vegetable garden still has to be cleaned up. Nearly 90% finished with two new planting areas. Still need to put mulch on top and just let them sit till next spring. Waiting for the cannas to die back so I can dig them out and store them for the winter. Weekend is suppose to be sunny, so I guess we will be back out working outside for the next couple of days till the rains come again. Julia

So good to hear from you, too, Luckygal! And, wow, you sure did good for 1 day of GS'ing! sounds like a lovely camping trip...always enjoy being by a lake, too! And such wonderful dish bargains! I'm going to post a pic here from GJ that you might enjoy...that I saved in my future projects album...someday, I may find the right statue to try one of these and collect enough seashells...don't find them often here in the corn & bean fields! LOL! I LOVE your summer/beach vignette...that painting is what makes it come alive...I can hear the ocean! Love how you "nested" that large seashell on top of the vase...used so many textural items in the vignette & adding the candle! BEAUTIFUL! TFS! Jeanne S.

Yes, I meant to communicate "stupid things" I've done in my old house. Otherwise, I would quickly reach the limit with postings. There is a reason I now always have a spray bottle of water next to me as I heat gun. Heat guns get hot. Former owners may have filled holes with rags. The combination is frightening. I think one of the stupidest things I've done is to explore new skills on the front of the house. I just wanted the house to look better from the street so I dove into the stripping and painting process. I don't think many people would notice the areas that bother me. I now know I should have learned on a less visible area of the house. Sharon, how long will it takes for these errors to become charming? Maybe I'll start calling these blunders future charm. That's a great barn and I love the "mistake". I also collect "stuff" that we, or others, may find useful. I have stacks of old windows with great glass in them. I do harvest the glass for windows I am working on, but there is far more than I will ever need. I have doors, maybe 20 deep, leaning against the wall in my barn. I couldn't have them go to the dump or get burned. I have probably salvaged enough doorknobs to furnish my street. As part of an old house group, my husband and I were given a chance to strip three old houses destined to be torn down. A new science building would replace them. It was as if an addicted person was placed at the source. These items will all be offered for donation to benefit the organization. I will make the appropriate donation for the things I need. Unfortunately, I am also making donations for things I might need. After you walk past all the doors and windows you won't even notice the other items. The junk men know my name and I have their phone numbers. Sometimes I just find things next to my gate. Instead of becoming the old lady with all of the cats, I will be the one with all of the house parts. Anyone remember the movie "Burnt Offerings"? My husband is sure I'll be moving up to the attic. He's wrong. I prefer the loft in the barn.

I think they are wonderful! I was just talking to mom about you yesterday. I said about how for years all you drew was horses, maybe now you have realized that you can draw anything that comes to your mind. :) That is amazing! P.S. Did you ever finish the apple tree picture that I loved so much? Heather - who can draw one mean stick person. LOL!

Wow those are all awesome. I love that first QOV in particular. And the long arm quilter definitely didn't just "phone it in" either. Love the quilting she did - the loops in the pinwheels and pics in the border.

I've been collecting frabric for some QOVs -- need to get going!

AWESOME on all and I love the Mary Poppins umbrellas too. Very creative!

Oh, they are all so beautiful. I love the Mary Poppins and the London background. I also love the corners on the first QOV. The QOV's will make a couple of soldiers very happy I'm sure. You do great work.

I am another member who thinks the Mary Poppins quilt is a winner! You even caught the grey London sky, which makes the umbrellas stand out so well. They are so nicely sized, too, and placed to suggest motion.

Both QOVs are gorgeous, especially the top one with its fancy corners and wonderful quilting around the border. I also love the richness it gets from those bits of gold fabric.

I can't pick a favorite thay are all GREAT!!! But if i was forced to choose,i think i'd have to go with the first QOV one.

Think i should also make some QOV quilts,since i have a lot of Americana fabrics,and i need to use it up.

Funny thing about the corners on that first QOV - I struggled and stressed alot about what to put in the corners - found a block I liked on Quilterscache, had to resize it to fit the border widths, paperpieced it (not my favorite thing to do!) and it just turned out wrong!! I had just one corner made and spent over a day on it, and then had 3 more to do, so I gave it away, and just drew those "rays" on a piece of paper, sewed 4 of them in about an hour, and it was done! Sometimes simpler is better! And those tan triangles - those are corners cut off of another project for troops that I did. One of our car clubs periodically gets together and fills boxes for troops to send to Iraq, and I made 60 cooling neckties (fill narrow tubed scarves with polymer crystals, and when soaked in water, they expand and stay cool for hours) and I trimmed off the ends of the ties to narrow them down , and the resulting triangles were too nice and big to just discard - saved them and this quilt was just perfect for alot of them.
Here's 40 of them - I was told to stick to colors that would blend in with their uniforms, not bright, colorful ones.

Wonderful quilts! I saved a copy of the first one on my computer for future inspiration!
Also, I have 2 of the cooling neckties for my kids who play soccer here under the Florida sun. They are great.
