Using bandana for a mask...

I'm not trying to make light of the flu outbreak, but since I don't have a surgical mask, I was thinking about using a bandana for a mask to go to the store. However, I don't want to get shot being mistaken for a robber. lolol

As luck would have it, I started getting sick Sunday with a scratchy throat and now some coughing. And my cat is on her last can of food today.

I'm feeling better enough to make a quick trip to the store, but can't decide if I'd freak people out more if I cough without a mask or if I wear a bandana. :)

I don't think the surgical mask that's being used so much is any more effective than coughing or sneezing into the crook of your elbow as we were taught as kids. Now if you were going to wear the respirator type of mask then that might be a different thing. My vote is to just not spew your coughs and sneezes out into the air for somoene else to be infected. Exercise care and limit your time out and about as much as possible and I think you and anyone you come in contact will be OK.

The surgical masks and bandannas are worn so that you do not spread the virus. If you are feeling sick be a good citizen and I would wear it. Sanitize your hands before touching the shopping cart and going into the store touching merchandise.

Masks must be changed often. Once they become moist from breath they become a teeming home for germs.

In my area it is in the news that they closed 14 public schools where children have come down with the flu. People are protesting with signs and bringing their kids to stand in protest lines with signs. I don't get that.

Lychee, I never thought to use any protection the few times I used Surround; I found it obnoxious after it was applied because of the texture, but I didn't experience a dusty quality, and of course chemically it's very inert (it's clay and pretty dense). Of course it goes on wet, so dust isn't an issue during application. But it's worth considering whether the dust might be dangerous if inhaled in quantity. I doubt it myself, unless one smokes (because smoking destroys the cilia that provide the first line of defense against such things) but even then I have to wonder whether it's any worse than the many country roads I've driven on. It's not like asbestos or those kinds of things, to the best of my knowledge.

Oh boy, I do remember those, way back in the 50s we would take to very large bandanas sew a short shoulder seam and then do a side seam leaving armhole the size of the wearer, they were all the rage, worn with jeans, (we wore jeans for playwear only) very comfortable when washed and softened up, mostly red or blue, some black, not many other colors then. LOL

It's on the interior, wood. The research I've done shows many use it when there are multiple mullions to easily mask off areas. It doubles as a primer so when you're done you cut away and peal it off the glass. But like I said I have no real experience or first hand knowledge of this product working or how effective it is.

Granlan, I would highly recommend that you forego the bandanna. Right now is a tough time in the travel business so I don't the extra $$$$ to send to you for bail. ;~P

If you choose to go out without a mask or bandana, practice good hygiene. If you need to cough or sneeze, use a kleenex (then throw it away) or cough/sneeze into your own sleeve, not into your hands. Use hand sanitizer before and after touching grocery carts, door handles, etc. And hope you feel better soon! .

I highly doubt anyone will think you are plannig a felonious act Lana. If they do simply threaten to sneeze on them. LOL

I would carry the bandana with me into the store and hold it over my mouth/nose rather than tie it on.
If you are approached (which I don't think you will be) tell them you are taking health precautions.

Not trying to make light of it either, but I gotta share DGS Hunter's take on the flu!

DD Heather and I got an email last night from the boy's Mom.
She said Hunter's been coughing and must not have felt good, he came in and told her he thinks he has the "swan flu"!

Y'all, I appreciate the practial advise. I do practice these all the time actually.

I don't have the flu, but gool ol' chronic bronchitis/asthma which sounds so darn bad in public. I keep tissues and/or a bandana to cough/sneeze in.

Do your usual for yourself,but keep in mind what is out there Lan.

Be sure to wash good AFTER you have touched whatever everyone/anyone may have....you may not spread what you have yourself..but you just might end up getting anything ontop of your own issues.

I hear ya, Rhonda..I'll be careful. If I had more in the pantry or freezer (like tuna or chicken), I'd just share with my little Stash cat, but alas......
