Using bandana for a mask...

I'm not trying to make light of the flu outbreak, but since I don't have a surgical mask, I was thinking about using a bandana for a mask to go to the store. However, I don't want to get shot being mistaken for a robber. lolol

As luck would have it, I started getting sick Sunday with a scratchy throat and now some coughing. And my cat is on her last can of food today.

I'm feeling better enough to make a quick trip to the store, but can't decide if I'd freak people out more if I cough without a mask or if I wear a bandana. :)

I don't think the surgical mask that's being used so much is any more effective than coughing or sneezing into the crook of your elbow as we were taught as kids. Now if you were going to wear the respirator type of mask then that might be a different thing. My vote is to just not spew your coughs and sneezes out into the air for somoene else to be infected. Exercise care and limit your time out and about as much as possible and I think you and anyone you come in contact will be OK.

The surgical masks and bandannas are worn so that you do not spread the virus. If you are feeling sick be a good citizen and I would wear it. Sanitize your hands before touching the shopping cart and going into the store touching merchandise.

Masks must be changed often. Once they become moist from breath they become a teeming home for germs.

In my area it is in the news that they closed 14 public schools where children have come down with the flu. People are protesting with signs and bringing their kids to stand in protest lines with signs. I don't get that.

Might be cool to get the tiny terra cotta pots & tie a knotted bandana around each of them-adding a piece of styrofoam inside & silk or fresh daisies. You can use the bigger pots as well & simply take a bandana & soak it in liquid fabric starch then cover the pot with the fabric. Let dry overnight & trim the edges to suit you & perhaps glue a piece of cording on the top rim and around the bottom of the pot. # pots per table-of graduated sizes & filled w/flowers of your choice...cute! I also like them used as napkins-you could use rope (tied lasso style) as the napkin rings. I'd even probably get a child's size straw cowboy hat to put in the center & place the pots around the brim. Maybe cut pockets from old jeans (YARD SALES!) and using fabric paint-put your new last name's initial on the pocket, then add your packets of seasonings/rubs inside the pocket.Ooops-I see the rubs are in jars...hmm..well buy denim yardage & cut pieces big enough to gather the material up around the jars & tie off w/roping-making them pouches instead of the pockets.

Oh boy, I do remember those, way back in the 50s we would take to very large bandanas sew a short shoulder seam and then do a side seam leaving armhole the size of the wearer, they were all the rage, worn with jeans, (we wore jeans for playwear only) very comfortable when washed and softened up, mostly red or blue, some black, not many other colors then. LOL

Thanks, sleeve. I have an 11 yr old opened BOS of the no vent N95 respirators. Date says (c) 2002 or close. Time flies. I think these were for SARS outbreak. surprisingly the yellow rubber like bare elastic is still good. The exhaust vent types were purchased in early January 2020. No one of my siblings wants any, saying that their too uncomfortable. I mostly stay HOME. We don't socialize, and make very few trips out. But, yesterday was a gorgeous day and I went with a masked neighbor who seems very careful to buy some tomato plants, lettuces, organic milk and deli salads (darn pricy) at at super aware country store. Only a couple people in at a time with masks, distancing and no bags from elsewhere. Half gal milk = $7.75 in glass bottle ($1.50 if return bottle). A cup of bean salad, $4. I will figure out their recipe. I put it through the mass spectrometer in my mouth. I wore an old, non vented N95 and safety goggles. Mask was u o for table and hot. I DID keep messing with it, so was glad I was pretty much in the clean rural woodsy boondocks. (But you never know). When we passed through a working class small city, I went into a store for wine. I had on my gear, the cashier had on a cowboy bandana. A 30-ish woman came into the store, o mask, and barbed into my shelf area. I left For the cashier. She was right behind me, no mask, no distance, no sense. I asked her to please back up (like 5 feet!). She had a bunch of pink and lavender colored toy wine. She looked at me as though I’d told her that there was a deadly global pandemic. Meh. No worries. No cares. My friend encountered a couple of women in a grocery store. No mask, crowding her. She asked them why they were not wearing a mask. They fired back that it was their freedom of choice, blah blah. The State is on MASK rules if outside your home. Oh, and distance. What is with these clueless people. Flyovers are okay, but how about some public service announcement, mini tutorials on infection control? Think I might tell the next maskless fool who won’t keep back that, oops! You e got something stuck on your face! Then disappear as they rubs cooties into their fave with dirty hands. I won’t do it. But what is with the clueless, right to infect others, mask-less zombies? At least they didn’t shoot us in the back of the head (Recent MI news). I spotted a 25Lb bag or organic, unbleached, AP flour for $25. Maybe I should go back to the clean store for it. But that’s a lotta flour.

Granlan, I would highly recommend that you forego the bandanna. Right now is a tough time in the travel business so I don't the extra $$$$ to send to you for bail. ;~P

If you choose to go out without a mask or bandana, practice good hygiene. If you need to cough or sneeze, use a kleenex (then throw it away) or cough/sneeze into your own sleeve, not into your hands. Use hand sanitizer before and after touching grocery carts, door handles, etc. And hope you feel better soon! .

I highly doubt anyone will think you are plannig a felonious act Lana. If they do simply threaten to sneeze on them. LOL

I would carry the bandana with me into the store and hold it over my mouth/nose rather than tie it on.
If you are approached (which I don't think you will be) tell them you are taking health precautions.

Not trying to make light of it either, but I gotta share DGS Hunter's take on the flu!

DD Heather and I got an email last night from the boy's Mom.
She said Hunter's been coughing and must not have felt good, he came in and told her he thinks he has the "swan flu"!

Y'all, I appreciate the practial advise. I do practice these all the time actually.

I don't have the flu, but gool ol' chronic bronchitis/asthma which sounds so darn bad in public. I keep tissues and/or a bandana to cough/sneeze in.

With all the gun toters here in Texas, just wouldn't pay to chance the bandana approach. :)

Do your usual for yourself,but keep in mind what is out there Lan.

Be sure to wash good AFTER you have touched whatever everyone/anyone may have....you may not spread what you have yourself..but you just might end up getting anything ontop of your own issues.

I hear ya, Rhonda..I'll be careful. If I had more in the pantry or freezer (like tuna or chicken), I'd just share with my little Stash cat, but alas......
