My Roadside Mirror

Saturday I drove by a house that had a yard sale earlier that day. They weren't able to sell the mirror (which was priced at a whopping $3) so they said that I could take it:

Lady luck strikes again!

That's DH taking apart our DR to take to the shop and my dog really does have 4 legs LOL!

Nice find!

Time to change the Foxes pad menu. May I suggest a nice thick steak with a side of sauteed mushrooms?lol!

How much area does this space cover? I agree that vinca minor (periwinkle) and honeysuckle are good bank covers. You mention trees. What kind of trees, how much spread, and are there surface roots? We've had good luck on the bank outside of our fence with iris and day lilies. There is also the honeysuckle and periwinkle ground cover ( over a very rocky and dry area). Periodically it, gets cut with a weed eater. That's all. We also build up the areas under the trees with the fall leaves. We put them in piles and leave them. We usually keep them in place with welded wire cages. In spring we put on some top soil and plant in it. We have transferred day lilies , iris, and stoksia aster into a dry corner area under trees. Tiger lilies and tall phlox are also doing well there. The phlox was there when we came here 18 years ago. The only thing we have done to it has been to thin it out and cut it down when finished blooming. It is in full bloom now. I feel the most important thing is to build up the soil well enough to nurture the roots of the plants and to choose plants with shallow roots or rhizomes, such as the iris and day lilies. That also helps with the erosion. There is nothing blooming continually but the day lilies follow the iris and there has been color since spring. Many of the plants we have used have been divisions shared by neighbors. One of the prettiest gardens I have ever seen was a corner of a city block filled with zinnias entwined with blue morning glory. It might be a little hot and dry now for seed sowing but zinnias germinate and grow fast and come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. For a fast annual garden a variety of zinnias would be enough. Last fall when the zinnias had gone to seed I pulled them and piled them around a stump. There is now a patch of blooming zinnias there and I haven't done another thing to it. We also have a self sowing petunia that returns year after year and homestead purple verbena which has been very durable. Hope you will give us feed back. EP

one_eyed_pony The garden does pay for itself and we end up with about ten cents an hour for our labor...lol We had ninety dollars in seed alone. Ya gotta love gardening to do 4000 sq ft. Nicole, good for you for finding a way to make the chairs work for now, they are great chairs in such good shape. Are you sure, though, that you only need 4 yards of fabric each? I ask because I used 7 yards on my little chair. However, a fair piece of that was used to make the welting (although I made way more than I needed!). Here is the link to a yardage chart on a professional upholsterers site I found http://www.carrscorner.com/yardagechart.php I know what you mean about fabric price! I used CL fabric on my chair, but when I was looking for the dining chair fabric I was floored at the prices. That is why I'm using a table cloth to cover the one I'm presently working on! ;) Trancegemini, I am now kicking myself for not taking photos of the reconstruction of the chairs! Yesterday I started to rebuild the wooden chair shown above, and I started from scratch with it! I added all new webbing, replaced the springs and hand tied them, new burlap and now all new padding. I have tear-down photos of both chairs, but got so involved with putting things back together that I didn't think to record that process! Next time for sure. Double welting is the decorative trim used to cover raw ends, and I see from the link I just found that I can still use this on my pink chair looking at the way it is made, but I would have to purchase a special foot for my machine. LOL about the menu! Yes, it is time to change it - my kids are so excited for Monday's now. Every Monday "Corndogs! Yay! We love corndogs - mom's the bes...What...NO CORNDOGS?!"

Ran out to the hardware store to buy a heavy duty hook this afternoon. Bribed DD w/ the mirror to clean her room. No cleaning? Then no mirror & no pink table. Hung the mirror too high. Sigh.....Oh well it'll stay for now. What a difference swapping her shelf over her bureau for the mirror made! So much more 'clean' and 'simple'. Got a new paint brush to start painting her room white beginning in that corner after she gets up from her nap.

DH just finished putting together the alley DR table and cleaning it up so I'm headed off to that room now. LOL!

And Cyn...tag along anytime!

Fabulous find!

Was it you that got that amazing garage sale chandelier? Did it ever get it hung? I have chandy envy over that one BAD.

Franksmom - yes that was me that found the $10 chandie! I decided to put it in in DD's room. The mirror that I found has the same type of rosettes on it that the chandelier has. I'm probably going to have it rewired first but our electrician moves at a snails pace (still wtg. on one that I gave him a month or two ago) but that's okay since DD's ceiling nds. ripped out and redone.

I didn't get to paint the walls white but here it is hanging up (moved it down) and her room sort of cleaned up. We dug out the little silver beaded lamp that I got from Bombay Co. when I first started working there, and she and I went downstairs and got some rhinestone frames (also ancient Bombay) that had pictures of her brothers in. The girl has good tatse when gentley guided! She got her first arrangement of fresh flowers - pink roses no less that she wanted from our garden - she's such a girlie-girl!

Her pink table is up but that corner of the room was a bit disasterous so no pic. I showed her how it is a dual function table (can't start 'em too young!)she can use it to have tea parties and lunches w/ her dolls by turning the table and using her wingback chair and bed and pulling up her doll high chair.

Oh, I remember that little moppet! Didn't you post a pic of her by your front door a year or so ago? She is a DOLL and that room is darling!

What a beautiful mirror! I don't think it's too high at all. That is one beautiful room and the wall color is so nice. Of course the most beautiful thing in the room is your precious little daughter!

Sis2two - I had already lowered the mirror when I took that pic. I decided it was too easy and quick of a job to rehang it so I did it right away.

Nini - I am repainting the room white. Hoping to get to it tomorrow. That wall color in the pic looks awesome w/ raspberry accents!

DD is greatly enjoying hosting tea parties!
