Quarter round moulding behind bed?

I have a handyman coming tomorrow to replace some quarter round moulding on the floor trim in a hall and bedroom. It was removed by previous owners to accommodate wall to wall carpeting. So here is my question. Should I add quarter round to the wall behind the bed? Right now the bed in that room (guest room) has no headboard on it, but I plan on getting one soon. I presume the legs of the headboard will go down to the floor. The quarter round would prevent the headboard from being pushed close to the wall. There would be a 1.5 inch gap between the headboard and the wall.

When you walk in the room, the side of the bed is directly ahead of you, so the gap would be noticeable.

Would it make sense to omit the moulding on this wall, or is it odd to have it on every wall but one?

Hope I am making sense with my description.

I would put the quarter round on the wall behind the bed - that is the way mine is. I don't like for my headboard (wooden sleigh bed) to touch the wall.

It should actually be base shoe, not quarter round. But either way, if it's installed elsewhere, it should be everywhere. Also, it's best not to have any furniture actually touching your walls.

newhomebuilder - thanks. I am hoping it will look okay. I had wanted to put in a built-in for television etc, but DH wants to put in wet bar. I am just not so sure if I like the open sink showing. Thanks forhgtv... I think we will be okay too since the molding doesn't connect to other molding. I did a quick mockup of what it will look like... I put in the bar, lightened the crown molding and darkened the ceiling. What do you think of the bar layout? We already ordered the cabinets but we would send back if there was a much better layout worth possibility of getting stuck with restock fee. The upper cabinets will be lighted and have seed glass. There are two wine cubes, then below those is a small cabinet that opens. I am not sure what to put behind the sink. In the mockup I put a mirror and then at the lower level is a two tile high backsplash with a vineyard scene (not sure if this is too much or too tacky). The bottom cabinets will be a cabinet with slide outs to put liquor bottle on, then the sink base, then a stack of drawers. The chair will be moved and those windows will be sliding doors to deck. I also modified the mantel to be a wood mantel. Not sure what we are going to do. Previous owners glued mirror onto the two tiered rough cedar mantel. So we are having the mirror removed and then will see what our next step will be. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the advice/experience. The quarter-round I purchased is prefinished white and is some type of composition/wood that is supposed to resist water well. Also, the back-splash is abouot 3" high, so very little water gets on its top. I handled this specific case about ten years ago by filling in the space with a tape-like caulk. That is it was sticky as a string of silicon caulk but it also had/has a finished glossy white face side. As said, it held up for ten years before it deterioriated enough for my wife to say "fix it". I can't find that tape product anymore: not at HD, Lowes or Wal Mart. That's where I've looked. Tile is clearly a good long-term fix. I did look at that too but didn't find any bull-nose that was thick enough. What I need is something that will on one end cover a space between the back-splash and the wall approaching 1/2", everywhere else the gape is a 1/4", maybe less. I did not install the counter! I think I'll locate the studs and use some white head nails to attach, drilling a small pilot hole in the quarter round. If I may bring up another subject: I have a high quality ultra-sonic stud/metal finder and it works great finding studs through drywall. However, I haven't had a lot of luck with it trying to find the studs from the other side, from the outside "looking" back through the exterior plywood. This is a sometimes needed function when I have to replace a few clapboards because the builder didn't install them correctly, including not finding the studs. As you may know, nailing clapboards just to plywood doesn't hold up.

Re: the quarter-round: Personally, I hate it; it's so fat and thick, and such a boring, predictable shape.Because it's fat, it sticks out too far for me (I have visions of toes bumping it in the kick-board space), and it catches a lot of dirt, bcs it's wide (even if it is curved) But I needed some at the baseboard in my bathroom, and I went with a slim bullnose-type molding I found at Home Depot, *near* the quarter-round. It's about 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch thick, about 1.25 inches high, and the top edge is rounded like a bullnose. It covered the same distance as the midsize quarter-round, but it was FAR slimmer than the *small* quarter-round. Shoe moulding is a little less fat than true quarter-round, but this stuff was even more dramatically slim. It was more like a piece of lattice w/ a rounded top edge, really.

Hey there - I was going to suggest the schluter edging as well - we used it on a floor, and a friend has it in her kitchen and while I'm not like "WOW! Awesome edging!" I basically don't notice it. It comes in an awesome copper color that blends perfectly into slate... but that's probably not helpful to you! Also comes in brass-like and brushed stainless-like. We used a mix of tile behind the stove and beadboard everywhere else, so wood was already in the mix. That being said, we used .5" x 1" sticks to frame out the subway. I hated it at the time, but now, again, don't really notice it. May not be for everyone, but here's a pic so you can see what I'm talking about - we did buy the bullnose pieces for where the tiles are next to the painted (orange) wall - but needed a transition between the beadboard and tile - bullnose wouldn't have worked well and the tiles and beadboard are different thicknesses, so they didn't make a smooth transition on their own.

Okay, thanks. That's what I needed to hear. There is part of the trim (or whatever that's called), just not that piece that I call quarter round. Guess I'll stick with the plan to install it.

Okay, base shoe it is. I learn a lot here, although when you think about it, quarter round is a more accurate description, at least IMHO. I guess you can flip a coin over the correct spelling of mould/mold. Actually, shoe mold sounds kind of gross, like what grew inside my sons' sneakers when they were kids.

Yes, I will get it all the way around. The piece I am missing is the one in the bottom right of this sketch.

The difference between shoe mold and quarter round is that the former is a bit taller, but not as thick as the latter.
That being said, whichever your contractor is using, I've seen both used for this purpose, you can notch the back of the headboard legs to fit around the base and the shoe mold/quarter round when you get a headboard.

Let a trolled add their 2cents to this. The quarter round can be put down next to the shoe molding. Most people paint the shoe molding but leave the quarter round natural colored. It makes getting a good paint job the next time your room needs painting. You just remove (carefully of course) quarter round, paint, then replace. Makes for a nice transition to the floor.

Sure learning a lot. I'll be using white so it matches the rest of the rooms upstairs. When I had the downstairs floors refinished, they installed oak to match the floors and that looks nice. Feel free to troll any time with good info like that.

Justgota, brilliant idea! I'll remember that. Is it possible to attach a headboard to the bed frame so the legs don't touch the floor?

Being sort of a "molding" freak I tend to look at all the moldings in every house, every picture. I've always hated quarter-round and have only had base shoe which I've described as "quarter-oval" to explain the difference in the shapes.
My question is for Toolbelt68-I've never seen quarter round in front of shoe mold-and the picture that shows shoe mold is not what I would call shoe mold. The picture looks more like a small flat casing than true shoe mold. Shoe mould (I prefer the U), is much shorter than the picture shows.
Now I need to go on a search for what that drawing shows as shoe mold. And it's late!
