Patti, there are Sooooo many words that I misspell!! If it wasn't for auto spell check on the e-mail and IESpell on the forums...it would be really bad. Even HAVING those available all the time, there are times I don't take the time to check!! "/

I always thought I was a good speller until someone posted a spelling test here at one time. Took the wind out of my sails that time! Yes, I always have to check on the spelling of that floor cleaning machine, too! Another one is cemetery. (I spelled that last word with an "a" and spellcheck caught it.....I'll never learn.)

It isn't only those complicated words like you mentioned.

Simple things like just I am more likely to spell it with a "g" as in gust. Then I know something is wrong, but that doesn't make correcting it any easier.

At least I have enough age to use for the blame -- LOL twenty years ago I couldn't use that, but was just as bad at spelling.

The word I can't ever remember how to spell is arthritis. There is so much of it in my family. My sister has rheumatoid arthritis, as did my grandmother, great grandfather, great great grandmother.

I know I have a problem spelling certain words. No spellchecker that I can find, so if I'm not in a hurry I'll look it up in my dictionary. Sometimes though if I look at a word too much it just doesn't look right anymore even when it is spelled correctly.

Sheriff, occasion, occurence - just a couple of my bugaboos. Did I spell sheriff right this time?

When I was a secretary I was an excellent speller. But, now I forget certain spellings. Grammer is also down hill, because I use slang now.

LOL vacuum and sheriff are two of my main ones!

DH regularly misspells tomorrow, drives me nuts. I have a hard time with vacuum and weird sometimes. Usually I know how to spell the word it's just that my fingers don't want to type them correctly. :o) Often I'll type 'no' when I mean 'know' things like that. I know the difference, it just doesn't go from my brain to my fingers.

I had an English teacher tell me that a more intelligent person tends to misspell the easier words because they want to over complicate things. He was 'prolly' just trying to make me feel better.

Lydia - install the Google toolbar, it has a great spell checker on it. I use it ALL the time.

The word I see misspelled most often is DEFINITELY. Man oh man, that's a common one.

My mother (born 1920) could have been a spelling-bee champ. However, she was from another generation...when kids went to school and learned reading, writing and ciphering (and spelling).

I have many words that I get confused over, but most of mine are typos. Like Sandy, I use IESpell and my e-mail spell check.

Many people on here definitely write that word as "definately".

Cemetery becomes "cemetary".

But the one that troubles me is that many use "loose" for when they can't find something, rather than for a belt that's too long and lacks enough holes (or "loose" change). I say that when I "lose" something, I can't find it.

I got on some people's case here a while ago about "weird", talking of "i" before "e", except after "c", except in such cases as "neighbour" or "weigh" ... and had to eat humble pie, for that latter list, weirdly, includes "weird", as well!

(As for "neighbour" ... Canadians spell funny [i.e. peculiarly], as well).

I think that there are a couple of others that are sort of my pet peeves, a;so ... but can't think of them at the moment, so I guess I'm not all bent out of shape over it!

I have a hard time keyboarding the letters in correct sequence, too often getting two (sometimes more) in reverse sequence.

It seems to me that we should give our children the example of doing things correctly and being precise, when possible.

They should set their vision on excellence, for they are in global competition, these days, which is getting more intense.

Those who figure that good enough will do ...will get left in the dust, I think.

I don't have grandkids, and I am not exactly unhappy about that, for I think that life will be a great deal more difficult for people in our part of the world, within a generation.

Our rich guys (mostly "guys") are getting really rich, and the numbers of the poor are expanding as the middle class gets hollowed out.

Look at South America a generation ago ... and still, to a point.

The means of production, of producing wealth, held in the hands of a few ... with millions of peons.

I have trouble with RECEIVE, or was it RECIEVE? Let see; its I before E except after C, except not for all cases. What the heck; Where's that spell checker?

My problem is tht i cnt type. My left hand is faster than my right hand, therefore, letter pairs get reversed often like TEH for THE. And oh yeah, how about when your fingernail catches the key above the one you intended to strike.

I make more mistakes now than I did when I was younger. I count myself a better than average speller, but sometimes I make some dumb mistakes.

I was in our local Subway this week and saw a hand-written sign suggesting that patrons try their new location across town with a "large dinning area." I'm still thinking of going back late at night with my magic marker to leave a red circle on the window. I went back and forth on whether I should say something to the staff or not. I'd surely come across as obnoxious if I said something, and likely the staff does not really care. On the other hand, it was driving me nuts! An email or forum post is one thing, a sign for the public in a business is another.

Maybe it is a large "resounding" area....LOL

You all have mentioned many of mine. I forgive other people when they spell something wrong, but dang--I'm a writer! Just goes to show I'm a "human" writer, coz I spell stuff wrong, too. And the older I get, the more I get in a hurry (especially on forums) and use the wrong word when I know the right word (their, there).

Ole Joyful, I agree 100% with what you've said. If you go to any news media website where reader comments are enabled, you'll find that 80% of the posts are rife with misspellings and poor punctuation and 98% of the posts have at least one misspelled word. And these are the people who are READING the news - in other words, I'd be inclined to think that they're "smarter than the average bear."
