I want snakes.
Comments (20)YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! I spotted my first snake today!! After all these years I finally spotted a black racer just after sunset. I got up close to be sure what kind it was and he stopped dead in his tracks. Remember they are just as scared of us as we are of them. As long as you leave them be they wont bother you. Now I am sure many will disagree but that is rather true. Most cases of snake bites involve some sort of disturbance to them. Though the disturbance may have been unintensional. I mean how did you know there was a snake under that overturned canoe next to the pond. As a child I found myself in an emergency room shortly after turning over a canoe. No not a snake bite, I was raised around snakes it was routine for me to use a large stick to turn over the canoe. Well that day the stick I was using snapped and went into my leg from the downward force of the canoe. A common phrase: "well I just stepped over the brush pile and he struck". Well you startled him when you came across. So, Yeah I get it. But if you see one in plain view and just avoid going near it then you will be OK. Now I know that may not hold true for all species but for most that is true. So why should all snakes be killed just because they are a snake? I ask that because thats what I hear from a LOT of people! "well any snake is a dead snake in my yard" a phrase that makes me cringe. A friend of mine many years ago brought a snake he had killed bragging about the copperhead. When I told him he had killed a corn snake he just couldn't believe it. I had to get a book out to show him. I never understood how the copperhead got that name when the corn snake has a lot more copper color than the copperhead. I don't know, does "copper" refer to something other than color? I suppose it has the darker color of tarnished copper sometimes but not usually on the head. Those darker colors are usually more mid body. Well I will have to keep quite about the snake. I don't want my neighbors to know they would probably freak....See MoreID-ing Snakes In The Garden - Coral Snake
Comments (54)Marcia, Please help me find out what kind of snake I came across today. While I was at the local dog park (near Orlando) I came across a yellow with black stripes snake. It looked to be between 3.5-4 feet long and did not appear at first glance (that was all I gave it out of fear) to be shiny. I was about 3 feet from it and didn't know it until my dog almost stepped on it. She obviously didn't see it either. The snake seemed a pit peeved about the whole thing but it decided not to attack and to slowly slither towards ME to get away from my dog. Needless to say, I took off in a different direction real quick and hollered for my dog to follow. I am not like you or others on this site. I am not a fan of snakes and am extremely afraid of them. Although, I don't mind the black racers that seem to have taken up permanent residence in MY back yard and they love to procreate often (or so it seems). I have seen a lot less field rats since the racers moved in and that makes me very happy. Anyway, can you help me figure out what this snake was? I have spent hours and hours online tonight trying to find it and just can't seem to find anything that looks like it. I am guessing that it is not dangerous to me or my dogs??? I am scared to take my dogs back through those woods that they so dearly love. As soon as I told them, "No more woods until the snakes are gone again," they "told" me to find it if it was dangerous or not and if it isn't that they want to go back again. So that is mostly why I am asking you for your help. We all love the walks but I am afraid of the snakes. Please help me feel safer about going back. Thanks in advance for your help....See MoreFront Door Huge Feng Shui Challenge
Comments (21)Sorry I didn't get to my computer until just now. To me, both green and black are fine, but if you are more comfortable with green, then go with green. Please understand I'm not a Feng Shui expert. However, if you think something in the house is afflicting your DD, perhaps you could look into the Flying Star Feng Shui school. Of course, after you're done with painting the door. Flying Star Feng Shui is essentially a method of mapping good and bad energies throughout your home. It works best in conjunction with the Form Feng Shui school. The Form Feng Shui school evaluates the house's environment: the terrain, street layout, nearby buildings and landforms, water bodies, etc. As I've already said, I favor Eva Wong who combines the Flying Star Feng Shui with the Form Feng Shui. This book by Elizabeth Moran could make a good supplement to Eva Wong's work, although it presents a rather simplified version. I did Flying Star energy maps for my home. When I saw what kind of energy layout my home had (not a good one, a high conflict house) I had my pastor do a home blessing for us. I also used a few countermeasures in some rooms. It helped a lot. We stopped arguing all the time, especially my DS. In fact, my house chart type is labeled as a "divorce house" in Feng Shui. Several couples lived in it before us, and each time the house was sold due to a divorce. My DH split up with his ex in a little over an year after moving in, although they had lived together for about 8 years in their previous home. Please remember that Feng Shui methods are more of an enhancement nature, like swimming downstream vs. swimming upstream. The main effort needs to come from the person himself. Sending my prayers to you and your child....See MoreFeng Shui for House Entryway
Comments (22)Thank you all for the great advice! I do want to clarify that perhaps we haven't had 'bad luck'. In general, we are very lucky to have a loving family, live in a nice house and have our health. This could just be that life is busier (and thus more things happen) and my daughter is school-aged bringing home more germs. My Mom reminded me that getting a cold twice a year isn't considered 'frequent' illness. Parents always have that innate ability to bring you back down to earth. Regardless, I always want our home to be the best it can be and feel like an oasis away from the busy world outside. I have thought of the idea of hanging a crystal light fixture from the ceiling but we don't have a light there currently and aren't going to start opening walls/ceiling to run wires. Additionally, at the top of the staircase there is already a light fixture so I think it might look strange. Can anyone recommend non-light ceiling fixtures? I have looked but haven't really seen ceiling hangings that aren't meant to be for lighting....See Moregyr_falcon
