Finished pool/spa/waterfall/grotto/slide

Been lurking for a while and just about finished up our project. Still having some issues with getting the slide "smooth", what kind of different finishes/sealers are out there for this?

So a month has flown by and we finished our second gunite shoot last week so I finally have a little extra time to give an update and post some pictures. First: There were some concerns brought to my attention about the quality of the plumbing (crossovers/heat bending and such) work so after looking into it a bit here is what I did. 1. I had 25 yards of sand and AB gravel delivered to my yard. 2. I proceeded to backfill the plumbing trenches with sand by hand/shovel and water hose until a good layer of sand was underneaththe plumbing. This took two days but I think it was worth the effort. 3. I then used a mix of AB and sand to continue filling the trenches 1/3 up, and any crossovers to get adequate support. 4. I then hauled out 30 yards of trenched dirt/rock as it was not my intention to use any of this crappy material to fill back in the plumbing trenches. 5. On the first gunite shoot I used the gunite rebound (3 or 4 yards) and lots of water to continue filling trenches. 6. The next day I used a bobcat to finish backfilling the trenches with AB gravel to grade level. 7. The plumbing has been under pressure at 40 psi for over a month with no problems. (I was told by some very reputable plumbers that setting the plumbing pressure any higher then this is a bad idea.) Undoubtably my plumbing will last for 20+ years maintainance free! :) Second: I took some extra time and expense to have the engineering firm I used send out an engineer for two on-site inspections just before each gunite shoot. It was good piece of mind for me to have the engineer on site and give final approval of the construction before gunite. Neil Anderson is the engineering firm and I am not sure if you could find one person in Northern CA who would disagree with the statement that they are the best there is. All right, onto the pictures and the progress. One week later it was time for the second gunite shoot: So I am calling it a little over half way done at this point and it has been time consuming road to get to this point as an owner builder. But I still have to say that doing an owner/build is a GREAT way to go. I would recommend it to anyone instead of using a pool builder unless you live in TX near Kelly. Then I would just use him!

Small Pool With Spa or Larger Pool With No Spa

I would think that a bigger pool would be better. We do use our spa quite often in the winter months, but we use the big pool almost every day once it's warm enough to wade in. If you miss having a spa later, you can always buy a hot tub (and close it in the summer months like my neighbor). Since the heating is going to be a problem, that might be the best way to go anyway. We were lucky that we had gas to our house, oddly, just to the water heater in the garage (I suppose electric ranges were all the rage in 1970), which we extended into the house when we remodeled the kitchen and laundry room for a gas range and dryer, and now along the side of the house to the spa heater. We have Artistic Pavers Shellock, which are pretty cool in the hot sun (compared to regular pavers) and expensive, but we end up using flip flops almost all the time anyway. We don't want to track grass or dirt into the pool and we need them for the shell under our tiki hut, so the deck isn't as important as I thought it would be. We also got a removable hand-rail offset at the main steps that we thought would be for when in-laws visit, but we ended up never taking it out. We use it for hanging towels that we grab as we step out into our flip flops. The fact that it's off-set instead of smack in the middle of the steps is really great. Anyway, biggest thing to think about is how YOU really expect to use the pool. If you are building it for your own young kids - remember they grow up fast you will be stuck with a pool you won't use for yourself once they're out of the house, so if YOU want a spa, get the spa. I was warned off of building a pool by lots and lots of people who had them for their kids - but our pool was really for me, and now my hubby uses it more than I do! The teens and their friends are just a temporary bonus. And the salt system is so easy to maintain, a happy surprise.

Thanks for the reply... so the inside of the grotto above is carved/colored gunite, right? And all the rest is real rock. Do you get those flat slabs from a regular stone supply yard? Can you give me an idea of what a slab like that costs and how big you can get them? Looks to be about 8" thick? I have a gunite grotto that my PB shot, and the waterfall is being done with all small rocks... and is not the look we were going for. I'd like to put a slab like that on top of the gunite shell, and then let it overhang the front, then veneer some sort of stone under the lip to hide the front edge of the gunite roof... and then step another flat slab a few feet higher up. And what is used to color the inside? Is it permanent or does it require maintenance? Thanks for your help. Your waterfalls look incredible!

Back wall, you understand except I would go to the level of the the top of the rock on the right (picture #2). Request a 9" overlap, drill a standard anchor and use a "D" ring or short spring on the strap. At the drop off by the skimmer, put a small pillow to fill the space and keep critters out. Long straps for the front of the spa with standard anchors and springs. Note that th cover manufacturer make declare it non-safe because of the tangle foot trip hazard potential. The cover will hold a snow load Put a layer of vinyl under the cover where it meets the spa except for the wall. It will prevent chafing, ensuring neither the cover nor the rock surface is marred, scuffed or torn. Another pillow for the other side's rocks. WRT to the PB's suggestion of draining/we do it with public pools all the time, public pools don't have the jungle you have. The potential for difficult to remove stains like tree sap, acorns, leaves, etcetera, is high.There is also a potential for cracking but that is small. I don't recommend closing the pool and not the spa. The spa will need to be drained to winterize it's bottom drains. Raised spas can freeze solid. I know I wouldn't want to jump in a full and cold spa with air blasting out the drains. I don't ask those that work for me to do things I won't do either. Once the spa is drained and the drains are winterized, you can still refill the spa from the pool. This will lower the water in the pool below the tile or close to it, judging from the pictures. Only fill the spa to 12 inches from the tile line. This allows rain and snow melt to finish it when using a mesh cover (recommended to keep weight down). Put a step pump in the main pool to keep the water off the tile. Pool covers are much larger than spa covers. It is more important to keep the water level less than 15" from the bottom of the cover because a snow load will need it's support . Snow floats. Snow when wet is heavy. In early Winter and mid to late Spring, these weights happen and put a lot of stress on the cover. Having the water there keeps it from getting out of hand. Pools have a lot more surface area than spas. The materials used in fabricating them are the same. The smaller perimeter of the spa cover won't have to hold the same amount of weight as the pool's cover. Sorry, I tend to ramble. Scott

AWESOME!!!!

I really LOVE your decking. Is it stamped/patterned concrete with colors or is it floor tile laid over concrete?
Every builder has his own favorite slide sealer, I use MMA over colored plastic flakes.

I used the same decking for my pool last year. It is from a Florida company called Artistic Pavers. They have all sorts of styles, sizes, and colors. They are about 1.25" thick concrete.

glass tile slide, that is interesting.... any pictures around the web of that?

the handrail was done with a rebarb frame, then concrete all around, chiseled out, the painted two colors.... black, then brown on top....

Where were you when I was looking to hire out my build?! I went w/ 'the best guy in the business' according to those I asked and I got a lot more grief than I ever bargained for. All of the pools you have built/shown us thus far have been magnificent. Wish you had done mine as well...

I think the OP may be gone but we just used some X cel deck new IR coating around our own pool, its nice and cool and slick if not put on a textured surface. DH did some color samples on smooth concrete which got covered, they were slippery when wet.

To Just, why not put that pool in its own post? It deserves it. Barb
