No problem with water. The lake is at least 5 feet below usual. Two nests were close enough to see this year, which brought folks out in droves shooting pics of them. I got to see a chick within 3 minutes of hatching (and ashamed to say, I didn't have a camera on me!). We winter in the Ocala National Forest in FL, and there are lots of sandhill cranes. Many live here year around, but some migrate north. The ones who stay all year stroll through yards and mobile home parks. In one park, a couple walks their great dane, and she said the local birds ignore him, the migratory ones whoop and jump around, because they aren't used to him.

2nd Nest Fledglings - Photos

Thanks everyone, We are so delighted to see so many fledglings up close everyday now. Here are just few more taken in recent days. This little one sits atop the nestbox (which contains 5 more eggs in Missy's 3rd nest), and calls to Mom who's perched on the spooker: This one is on the deck rail waiting for a spot to open up at the mealworm bowl: And for those of you who liked the "mad bluebird" shot, here's another wet fledgling up close: We're about 5 days away from the hatching of clutch #3, but we're still seeing all 8 of the fledges from the first two nests. oh joy, Kenn :)

Actually, after the leaves fell a few weeks ago, we found a very similar nest in an ornamental cherry tree right outside a kitchen window. Very round, rather small and the cup quite deep. Like your picture it was sort of crammed into the crotch of several branches for security. The weaving is quite thick and extensive on ours with a lot of material in it....not sack-like at all like an oriole's. Thanks for jogging my memory, I had intended to find out what type of bird lived right under our noses all summer and not be noticed.

Brenda, my old non L glass lens was 75-300! This one is shorter, but has better glass. I use a 1.4 TC on it, too.

Do you have to use a tripod? I have a 70-200 VR (same as your IS) but I think if I use the teleconverter, I'll have to use a tripod. We have baby Robins in a tree in our backyard and I'd love to try and get some pics this weekend. Don't know if I can though because they're pretty high up. We saw one of the parents fly in with food tonight and could see their little heads bobbing around.

That baby bird has more hair than my DH! LOL!

Oh, and that *swooshing* noise you hear is the sound of that camera talk going right over my head. :-)
