104 degrees and 2 eggs in the nest

We have had triple digit temperatures for a couple of weeks and no rain. My blues have started their 3 nesting in this Texas inferno. What is she thinking? She laid her 2nd egg today. I have heat shields on the box. I'm thinking seriously about putting up an umbrella west of the nestbox. Temperature relief, and maybe rain, is on the way tomorrow. Our high is going to be "only" 93.

Linda, we've experienced the same brutal temps and dry conditions. The 2nd brood fledged Sat., but when the nestlings were just a few days old, the heat index reached 108-110 degrees for over a week and I was worried sick. Thank goodness things have cooled off and we are getting a little much needed rain.

I didn't get a 3rd nesting last year so I don't expect round #3!

Sounds like you're doing everything you can to cool off the box. Did you purchase the heat shields or make them yourself?

Hope everything goes well with this 3rd nesting! Keep us posted.

Did you put up an umbrella. I have thought of doing the same, was afraid it might scare of adults.????

Love the blog BECAUSE yesterday I drove to a Tucson wildlife rehab home and gave them one orphaned Gambel's quail chick. I had it for one day and then was told by the feed store that is was illegal to raise it. "Pipsqueek" showed up first in my garden compound and then, six hours later in my garage at which time I caught it and brought it inside to rest on a low temp heating pad. I was thrilled to read comments on how it is possible for numerous eggs to hatch at once when only one a day is laid. Thanks for that. Here is a suggestion to discourage any birds from laying eggs in pots or other containers you want to be off limits: Partially crush aluminum cans and lay around the plants, totally covering the possible nesting site. The birds can't fit in there now and should find a more suitable site. I have used this for years, even placing cans on top of the patio fan where some dumbbells want to roost! It is unsightly but very effective. Replace when a strong wind blows the can(s) off. Here are 2 photos of "Pipsqueek" I took yesterday. I placed a toy Hush Puppy dog in the box because it had droopy ears like a bird's wing and that did the trick to comfort the baby quail. The mirror initially helped, too. My bluebirds have been building a nest since early - mid week last week and look about finished, here in N.E. Ohio The latest weather I just saw, after 3 straight 80 degree days, says we are gonna be in the 40's by the end of the weekend! BAD!!! Cherry, Dogwood, and Magnolias have ALL broke out into bloom! Other trees are pushing out leaves. The trees are WEEKS ahead of normal. Really hope my blues don't get a cold spell. Like tobygirl, I also lost a nest of blues to a sudden cold snap. One evening they were very poorly tending to the young. It was around 70 then. The next day, 50! 4-5 nestlings starved to death. I pulled the plug on the attempt after observing them laying in the nest stiffly, with no ability to chirp and couldn't raise their heads. When there were winds and cold rain. ~Tim~

I HAVE BABIES! I just got back a few minutes ago from being gone several days. Went right out to check the box, and just as I got there mom came flying up. My heart leapt! I peeked in very quickly, just long enough to see some fluff; didn't want to take the time to count. (It's a deep nest and I have to use a little dental mirror to even see down inside it.) Well, I figured out that I can take a pic much more quickly and easily than trying to look down into the nest. I read on Sialis not to use a flash (unfortunately *after* I'd already taken one). Anyway, I definitely have 4 - yay! - altho one is smaller than the others. I didn't realize heat really is an issue until reading Sialis again last night. Fortunately my box is positioned so that it's protected from late afternoon sun; but it's still been unbearably hot. So I followed your suggestion Lexarose (thanx for the idea) and just put some styrofoam on top. I haven't seen a bird go in since, but one sat on the spooker (which is on top of the styrofoam) for quite awhile. Should I watch the nest until I see one go in; or does this sound like they're OK?

I made the heat shields with a second identical nestbox. I used plastic tubing to hold the shields away from the nestbox about an inch. The plans are on the Texas Bluebird Society's website: http://www.texasbluebirdsociety.org/documents/heatshield_plans.pdf
I've not put up the umbrella yet. Today I woke up to the sound of thunder and rain. The Temperature is now 74 degrees. We are still discussing the umbrella. My idea is to put a metal T post a few feet away from the nestbox and put the umbrella there (west of the box) to provide afternoon shade. Husband is reluctant - afraid he will spook the birds. I keep telling him that these birds are very tolerant of nestbox monitoring and are used to my presence. Discussion continues.

A few years back somone posted a pic of a big yellow smiley umbrella over their nestbox. Put it up when you can be there to make sure they accept it. If they dont no harm done take it down, but im sure they will.

The umbrella is up as of 4 P.M. today. I had husband pound a T-post in the ground just SW of the nestbox. We taped the umbrella to the post. It provided great shade. The bluebirds totally ignored it.

One thing that you can do is water the yard especially around the nest box.That creates cooling.

I water every day that I am allowed. Wednesday and Saturday. We are under mandatory water restrictions.
