Quilt size problem and bed skirts

Is anyone else having issues with planning out their quilt centers & borders to accommodate deep mattresses? Many of the patterns I fall in love with will fit the top of my mattresses perfectly (a full and a queen size), but the borders aren't wide enough to cover the sides of the mattresses adequately. We have two of the newer sleep number, really deep mattresses. Adding more border leaves the quilt looking ill-proportioned. And besides that, my full size was my grandparents bed and is VERY tall, about 33" from top of mattress to the floor, so I have to make all skirts for it anyway.

The other issue is that if the quilt manages to cover the mattress side, I usually end up with sheet and blankets hanging out unless I tuck everything in all the way around... which is a pain!

Has anyone made a "pseudo" bed skirt that actually falls from the top of the mattress, rather than between mattress and box spring? I'm concerned that it might look too "billowy" coming from the top. I'm really in a quandary over this and hope someone has some solutions!

Because i have my bed higher than it's supposed to be(i have 2 box springs,the mattress and then a memory foam on top of that) It's also queen size,but i make my quilts for either king or even bigger.I keep laying the blocks out on the bed til i get the size i want/need.I like mine to fit more like a bedspread,so all the box springs are covered,then i also make my own bed skirts.Forgot to say that i also usually have at least 3 borders.Works for me!!

My mom made a bed skirt for me where she took a sheet and just gathered on fabric to it to hang to the floor-it was just perfect as I had the same problem with bedding that was lopsided and hunt belong my quilts!! I wish I had another one as that one ripped but it worked for many years.

"Yes,it will!!" Not necessarily. The way to determine the answer to you question is to take some measurements. Measure the width of the quilt. Measure the total distance of the width of the area you want to be covered by the quilt. For example, a queen sized mattress is 60" wide, and if the mattress is 16" thick, and the distance from the bottom of the mattress to the bottom of the box springs is 9", you need to have a quilt that is 110" wide to cover all of that. If your mattress and box springs are each only 9" deep, your quilt would need to be 96" wide.

Wonderful suggestons. I decided on the rail fence idea and an 8" block. That's big but I have to fill a queen size quilt with only 90 signatures and I did it with plain old math. I left a hole in the middle where I'll put a carpenter's star motif. I've sent the bride out to pick her blue fabrics and will strip piece the blocks and iron freezer paper to the back. Now, I have to test all my pigma and other pens to see which holds up better after a few washes. Wedding is Oct 13th. But I'll have plenty of time after that to put them all together.

A zillion years ago when I learned to quilt I took a class where we piece by hand a queen size sampler quilt. As I wss lucky enough to get mine done before the class ended we learned to baste my quilt by hand on post and ladder back chairs. I quilted it by hand. The only thing I used the sewing machine for was the seam that connected the backing pieces. I liked the process but it was slow. I have gone the route of quilting as you go (by hand) amd I have a floor frame that I have hand quilted a king size and queen size quilt. But that takes up so much room that I have done the rest of my hand quilting with a lap frame. Now I am trying to machine quilt. I have done small things with out too much problem but never free motion except for stippling. I find it a real challange to manipulate all that fabric. I sympathize with all of you who admit to the need for patience. The new Keepsake cataloge came today and I noticed they have Skillbuilder of Machine Quilters; It consists of 2 panels 44x35 printed with a lot of machine quilting designs with directional guides. Has a companion book by Renea Allen. I am giving it some consideration as a way to learn more. Has anyone tried it? Jayne

"Interesting responses. Sounds split! What might help is that we don't need it for warmth - it might be a pain to deal with actually. We would use it in summer months, but then might be better to get the guilt in the same pattern as the duvet." You know, if you don't need it for warmth, maybe you should try the quilt instead? I say this because my wool comforter is currently folded up at the end of my bed - it doesn't currently fit in my small linen closet and I haven't come up with another storage location yet. It's sort of a pain having it there day in and day out when we don't use it, so I probably wouldn't choose this route just for looks. What is the name of this duvet cover, do you know? My sister is working on her bedroom and I think this pattern/color might work really well for her. Thanks!

Kay, I don't have as many mattresses as Kathi, but I do the same thing. I make my quilt larger to start with so you don't have to have so much border.
... except thoses dreaded UFOs - then I have tried adding some spiced up borders that incorporate some squares so they aren't just long strips of fabric.

My preferred way is to just adjust the quilt size when making it BUT sometimes that's just not an option so I layer the bed.
Bedskirt, a solid colored bedcover and then the quilt
It's a bit more fussing but it works.
