Paducah 2013 -some favorites

I'm trying to share some pictures of my favorites. I didn't get so terribly many pics because I didn't want to make my mom and sister constantly be waiting on me to get a clear shot--it was crowded! There's also a YouTube slideshow of the winners of the various categories if you search YouTube for "Paducah 2013 winners".

The photo below is the bed today. Not very interesting because the plants are still too small to see well. The concept of the tub was so that they would get as much water as they wanted -- but unfortunately it was way too much water. The Ajax was to keep mosquitoes from spawning there, but that didn't really work either. I tried dunks too, but the whole thing was kind of a disaster. When it rained hard, the pool would fill up above the level of the soil, and I would have to scoop out water. A great learning experience in any case, and that's why I do this for fun and not for profit. In the future, I may use the pool for older seedlings and as a holding location for adult plants, but only if they are planted high and the water level is low. As for the lost seeds, of course I planted my favorite seeds first, then my next favorite, and the batch that finally worked well was pretty far down my list. But you take what you can get, and this is why I make more seeds than I expect to ever plant. Recipes for Spinach - Weeks 3 & 5 October 2013

Creamed Spinach Serves 6 2 pounds baby spinach or 2 1/2 pounds fresh spinach, tough stems discarded 1 3/4 cups heavy cream or whole milk, or a mix thereof 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 small clove garlic, minced (optional) 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg Wash your spinach well but no need to spin or pat it dry. Place spinach in a large pot over high heat. Cook, covered, with just the water clinging to leaves, stirring occasionally, until wilted, about 2 to 4 minutes for baby spinach and 4 to 6 minutes for regular spinach. Press or squeeze out the excess liquid any number of ways, either by wringing it out in cheesecloth or putting it in a mesh strainer and pressing the moisture out with a spatula or large spoon or letting it cool long enough to grab small handfuls and squeezing them to remove as much water as possible. Coarsely chop the wrung-out spinach. Wipe out large pot so you can use it again. Heat milk or cream in a small saucepan over moderate heat, stirring, until warm. Keep warm. Meanwhile, cook onion and garlic, if using, in butter in your wiped-out large pot over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until softened, about six minutes. Whisk in flour and cook roux, whisking, about three minutes. Add warm milk or cream in a slow stream, whisking constantly to prevent lumps, and simmer, whisking, until thickened, three to four minutes. Stir in nutmeg, spinach, and salt and pepper to taste and cook, stirring, until heated through. Do ahead: Creamed spinach can be made one day ahead and chilled, covered then reheated over moderately low heat until hot. However, it really tastes best eaten immediately.

Have lots to do today since the electric power was off nearly all day yesterday, so I have one less day for all of the preparations for Thanksgiving. Another idea for guests to make and serve themselves a light breakfast before a big meal is to put a toaster or toaster oven on a card table in an out-of-the-way place. Also on the table, put bread plates, butter, margarine, table knives, and the following toppings. Toppings for Toast Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Spread Mix equal parts of peanut butter and cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. For a sweeter spread, add a little honey to the mixture. The spread will last a week or more in the refrigerator. Apricot Butter Boil two cups of dried apricots with two tablespoons of sugar and 2/3 cup water until soft. Put in a blender and puree with four tablespoons of butter. Add one teaspoon vanilla extract or 1/2 teaspoon almond extract. Whipped Honey Butter Use an electric mixer or blender to whip 1/2 cup butter with 2/3 cup honey. If the mixture is too stiff to aerate, add a bit of milk. Season with ground cinnamon if desired. Jazzed up Cinnamon Sugar for Buttered Toast 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons raw sugar Finely grated zest of one orange 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon A few fresh gratings of nutmeg (I scrapes of the nutmeg on the grater) Mix and store in a jar. Keeps unrefrigerated for a couple of weeks, for longer storage, put in the fridge. P.S. I, too, am considering making the Eggs Benedict Casserole, but for Christmas. It sounds so good, Glenda. We had the best time. We laughed so much with each other I'd lose my breath and my stomach is sore from it today. Most of it was in the car on the way home after I missed our interstate split. It pays to have family with a good sense of humor when you see a "Welcome to Tennessee" sign and you aren't going to Tennessee.

There were more quilts than I'd ever seen using 1/2 inch hexagons as an element (I was always looking for them) and my mom is crazy about hexagons. She was pleased, but she was funny, too, properly impressed by the whole concept of 1/2 inch hexagons. Her's are 1 3/4 inches. "HUGE" she laughs now.

Thanks for the link to your blog, Karen! It's very nice to meet you and see another hand quilter. I read it a bit, enough to see you use a paddle, and enough to find an excuse to post a picture of the quilty things I bought at Paducah. I lured my mom and sister on the trip with promises of thimbles. These are all mine, mine, mine, two for thumb quilting and a pink one for finger quilting. I got my sister a matching pansy for her finger, but my mom had tried on a too-small-for-me silver Roxanne's and got stars in her eyes so she wouldn't have another one.

Amazing trip.............I'd start drooling at the Kentucky border. Keeps a person humble when you see all that artistry under one roof.
