Need more greens! And why don't I have tea?
Comments (4)Hi Khristle! It sounds like things were going well if your pile was heating up and you could not recognize the stuff you had put in there. I gather from your post that you know UCGs work as a green. How moist is the stuff you have in there with the shredded newspaper? Perhaps it needs more moisture after adding all that paper. Was the paper and coffee added to the previous stuff that had heated up before? Have you tried going a few days between spinning the tumbler? I have never used a tumbler but maybe you could try waiting a couple days between spins. If liquid comes off your stuff, I think that would be called a "leach" type fluid. It might contain coffee, veggie and fruit juices if you have just added wet greens. For "compost tea" I believe you use actual finished compost with it's beneficial micro-organisms and add some to (dechlorinated) water and then aerate the solution with device such as an aquarium pump or other air pump or circulator to keep the stuff from going anaerobic. I have never made tea but there are many discussion on this to be found - I am thinking of trying this someday when I have time for a new project! Personally I have not had success scoring spoiled produce from stores "sorry miss, we are not allowed to give this stuff away...", but some of my friends save kitchen scraps in an ice cream bucket and give to me since they are not composting their own stuff. (I have no idea why they have not caught the composting bug, but I still love 'em!) Good luck! It sounds like you have fun with that tumbler and will have some good stuff out of it one day! Comments (9)One thing you left out in the original post is the amount of time involved. How much time passed between when you started the compost and when it got hot? How much time between then and turning it? How much time before you then decided it had cooled off? It could be that what you saw was the normal composting cycle and you added straw to almost finished compost. Maybe if you had let it decompose a little longer, you'd have had some nice compost ready to use. Since you added the straw, you'll need a nitrogen source. I'm not sure if apples will provide much nitrogen. I think they're mostly sugar and water, but I seem to recall reading that fruits and vegetables are considered greens. Any chance of picking up coffee grounds from coffee shops or restaurants? Starbucks has a corporate policy of giving them to anybody who asks, but other places may be willing to save them for you also....See MoreNeed help choosing a green paint color
Comments (4)We like SW "Sagey". We have it in the LR and put SW "Softened Green" on one wall which goes down the stairwell. The "Sagey" is a gray-green that looks slightly greener in some lights. "Softened Green" is two steps down the color chart from "Sagey"....See MoreNeed Help with Sage Green Paint Color
Comments (10)2014: For anyone who reads this for, I'm sure the original poster has moved on from this issue, but it helped me! The original post complained that Behr's Mountain Haze is too gray and dull. I was going to use Mountain Haze but decided to do more research. Behr has a few other pale sagey colors: Cilantro Cream, and Pale Sagebrush. I did samples of each color on the bedroom walls. I decided that Mountain Haze was less sagey than I wanted. Cilantro Cream is in a coordinated palette with Ultra Pure White, so I decided to use this for walls and trim. Pale Sagebrush is pretty too, if you want just a little less yellow. Always remember - the color may look different on your walls, in your room, depending on lighting and flooring and other items and colors in the room. Ultimately I needed a slightly stronger color to carry the dark furniture in the room and Cilantro Cream fit the bill....See MoreUser
