Layout help - please help me plan a functional kitchen!
Comments (14)florantha - yes, I would want to protect the range from traffic more than in that last layout. The suggestions of opening up the long wall on the left are interesting, I don't think they are right for our family. We do want to keep a table in the kitchen and upon reflection, I don't really want the kitchen completely open to the family room since a little separation is nice when friends are over and the kids are watching a movie in there. I do think that the thoughts are ideas that could inspire other readers in their own planning. I am leaning toward option C (last) in the original post, but I am a little hesitant about the fridge location. I like it along the back wall because it leaves the sides of the room more open, giving more of a feeling of connection to the family room and to the outside through the window on the right wall. The room is long and my idea was to place the bulky fridge to shorten the room, not narrow it. Placing the fridge on the back wall in the corner also allows room for a bigger (deeper) fridge without interfering with traffic in the room - I'd like to maximize my fridge space without going to the expense of a large built in. But I also know that it's preferable to have the fridge on the perimeter of the kitchen. The proposed location would not drive traffice through the prep and cooking area, but perhaps it's still a bad plan? Feedback would be appreciated. For Layout C, the shallow pantry on the left side of the room is 12" cupboards, the space from there to the island is 41", the island is 41" wide, and the space from the island to the cleanup sink is 48". I've pulled the counters on the back wall so that the counters would be 30". Sorry not to have added these dimensions to the drawings....See Morewanted: Crown Moulding for cabinets
Comments (2)BTW I would like to use the moulding to close the gap between the cabinet and ceiling (I have not yet installed the cabinets, I can figure out the correct hanging height if I can choose a moulding now. Do you see any problem with this if the ceiling does not run true (I am sure this happens), Does anyone know how this is addressed? Caulking? Or just leave a tiny gap between top of moulding and ceiling? It's addressed by that piece of 2x4 flat stock you mentioned -- the molding is attached right against the ceiling, so it's the flat bit between cabinet and molding that winds up making up the unevenness. Sounds like it would be really obviously uneven, but because of the flat plane, it works! A real carpenter will probably wander along soon to fill you in on the details. :) If you go to a local lumberyard, they will have a lot of different cove moldings to choose from, and there are many excellent online sources, too....See MoreIkea Sektion Installation questions
Comments (0)Hello - I am partially there with my ikea kitchen install but had a couple of questions: - should the side cover panels just be used for the end of a cabinet run - or am I supposed to use them between cabinets if the cabinets are different sizes (I have a 30' long cab adjacent to a 40' long one so the last 10" of the 40" shows - is there supposed to be a cover panel between these two?) I'm sure its somewhat subjective but just wondering what the "normal" way to install these is. Also, if I do put a cover panel between those two top cabinets, then I assume I also have to slide one between the two base cabinets underneath to keep the spacing the same - but I don't know if it would be weird to have a side panel between two base cabinets of the same size - and maybe that is a reason to skip it on top? - the top cabinets are about 1 inch from the ceiling. the guy doing the install told me that when the doors go on they can be slightly dropped so there is a thin edge of the top frame available to attach a thin crown molding to that would cover the gap between cabinets and ceiling. he said this will be better than using the ikea deco strips because my ceiling is uneven. does this sound right? - for lighting that is going under the top cabinets -- where do the transformers go - behind the top cabinets? there seems to be enough space there, but not sure if there is somewhere else they are supposed to go. THANKS!!!!!...See MoreBulkhead in high ceiling kitchen?
Comments (6)I don't see mention of the height of your cabinets. Here's one kitchen I did with 10' ceilings and no bulkheads. I really don't understand the benefit of bulkheads--other than eliminating cleaning the tops of the cabinets once in a while. (Green added by subsequent owner.)...See Morealku05
