Here is a picture of the doors leaning against the wall I want to use for the long closet. The closet will be two feet deep, which will fit right up against the existing door frame. I think I will put large, colorful paintings the entire length of the wall above the closet---or a mural. I had a builder come in today for an estimate. He said it would work, and he had some good suggestions. I hope the estimate won't be out of my price range; I'll find out in a couple of days. I spent a few hours after he left cleaning the dust and dirt off the doors---they had been in an old abandoned factory for years before they were salvaged. Now, I need to go over them lightly with steel wool and mineral spirits, restain, then revarnish. Wish me luck! Here is a link that might be useful:

Thanks again for all of the help. This is my most-answered post of my project! It has been upsetting but I am over it now. As for the question, did he really throw them away, I believe it when he said he did. I am in the very uncommon position of really liking my contractor. I don't think he was lying to me about it. I think he just doesn't appreciate vintage, as budge1 experienced. I could be naive but he has been really considerate about everything throughout the whole job. Anyway, as I said I think the ones I ordered are in better condition than those I had. I will be seeking to deduct this from the final bill when the job is done. Thanks again! Thanks OS, that's what I'm trying for. It's so difficult to make a brand new house look old. I see gorgeous photo's of newly built houses that people have successfully transformed into something that looks beautiful, yet 100 years old. I'm having a difficult time envisioning the "whole" picture and that's why I need to take one thing at a time. If I had to make my living decorating for someone else, I'd starve to death waiting for the paycheck that would come at the end of the job. People on this board with young children will be seeing their kids off to college and I'll still be trying to deocrate this house. LOL Can you post a photo of your knobs, I'd love to see them.

Oh- I just checked my order and two mistakes on my original post- I did get the vintage bronze, good thing you asked! They look dark just like the ORB to me, I don't remember why I chose the vintage bronze since I did not know the information that you just posted. They've been installed for a year (not two) and I have not noticed any difference. I can try to get a picture tomorrow at home if you'd like. They look the same color to me as the ORB hinges that I used. BTW I really like the egg shaped knobs- besides being cute and different, they are so much easier to open than the round ones, without the "catching clothes" and "dog opening doors" problems of levers. I appreciate that DDH has all the needed specs on the knobs listed in a nice diagram. Make sure you measure your backset and bore. Our original crossbore was only 3/4 inch and this knob (and pretty much all other knobs now) needs an inch so it had to be enlarged. There is a door knob drilling kit from HD/lowes that you might need that includes the drill bit to enlarge the crossbore (you need 2 people, one to hold the door and one to drill). I also bought this knob because the faceplate was removable and I did not have a routed location for the faceplace on my door. Once the crossbore is the right size the installation is trivial. PS I learned all this information by first buying the knobs at HD without research and realizing all the reasons why they would not work. HTH
