Is it possible for a DIY'er to raise the thermostat on hot tub heater?

The water temperature in your hot tub or spa should not, at any point in time, exceed 104-degrees Fahrenheit or 40-degrees Celsius. Immersion in water above these temperatures, especially for prolonged amounts of time, can lead to a variety of heat-related illnesses such as stroke, heart attack, nausea and brain damage. Worst case scenario, these temperatures can result in death.

Our current hot tub is my 3rd one. It is set on 104 but the floating thermometer registers about 3 to 4 degrees cooler and I know it is right. On my other hot tubs I could get out and feel warm, but I get out of this one and I am cold. I know that it is not accurate. We live way out in the country and it will cost a fortune to have someone come out here to correct the problem.

I have finished major part of the project, still need to fix small things like paint work on the wooden boarder, arbor over waterfall, rails, aquatic plants and fish. here are some pics; Mia, thanks again for the pump and filters, it is working great, lift lot of water. racket, I don't think I will spend the extra on a heat exchanger. I am coastal calif. and it does not get cold here. Mike at Coastal Products said I want good circulation everywhere in the room. That's why he said the 480 cfm fan should be across the room from the air replacement vent--so the air moves. (The room has a sliding glass door I can leave open for air replacement, at least while I am in the tub.) poolguynj, I believe the unit will come supplied with an ozonator. if not I should probably add that feature. michelle, I will definately wire for 220. It is new construction and that will be easy. ronnatalie, I'd like to know more about your indoor swimming pool room. Is the cover enough? No special exhaust fan? No special vapor barrier? Anyone using solar water heater for their hot tub?

I use the dual heat method as well since sometimes you want heat but the sun isn't out. I have a 700 gallon attached spa, 480 sq-ft of EPDM solar panels and a 400,000 BTU heater. The controller I have will use solar first and then when the water is within a degree of the panel, it will automatically switch over to gas heat to finish the heat cycle. Some days, the panels are hot enough that the spa will easily reach 102 degrees with just solar. Other days require a gas heat boost. The controller is a nice feature so you don't need to think about it. In July, I can expect a peak rate of about 200 BTU/hr/sq-ft (~1600 BTU/Day) or about 100k BTU/hr which is about 1/4 the rate of my heater so it does take about 4x longer to heat the spa with the panels. If I know that I will be using the spa late in the day, I will usually heat it up before sun down. It might lose 5 degrees or more but it is still better than starting at the pool temp.

Its time to replace my old spa heater. The 11k heater , aquatech,element is in a round copper tube and the weld has failed. The hot tub is in a outside spa room with the equipment in a little room out back so I have plenty of working area. Pump,blower,heater are controled with vacuum lines/switches and a Hypro Quuip brain wired 220 with a dedicated service pannel. Fiberglass shell tub 7' across 40'' or so deep. While Im at it I may as well replace the pump its lost all but one of the speeds and is puting out pretty low preasure. Good brands,online sources?? Thanks Folks!! John Hyatt

In that case, can you give some specifics about the spa.
Is it a prefab, or inground. Specifics about the heater would help as well.

Our tub is a pre-fab KeyBackyard Spa which we bought from Sam's club. The heater has never worked right. I called the company, now defunct I might add, and they had me call a repairman who talked to me on the phone and told me that there wasn't anything wrong with my tub so he wouldn't come. I don't know anything about the heater it self. I know that it can be accessed by removing the spa sides. If it was something that my husband could do, I know that he would try!

You could buy a 4th one with the money you saved on the first 3. Or you could buy one from somebody that serviced what they sold.
