Reminder: postal food pickup

If the mailmen in your area are picking up food today, don't forget to put something out. I guess it's a nationwide thing, to help the food pantries, etc. I've got my little bag full ready.

We have our bag ready and Ivan will take it out when he takes out the mail. Thanks for the reminder.

Is there such a thing as TOO MANY pumpkins? I bought 3 when they were less than $2,- /ea and of course I picked the biggest ones. Didn't need to buy any. Yesterday I picked up 5 and today 7 and I have 12 pending. Their kids want to have a party first. Hope the pumpkins will survive that party (7). I will freeze them good, thaw them and get rid of the liquid and refreeze whatever is food stock unless it gets so cold they can just go in the garage. I just hope the worms won't get too spoiled after all these pumpkins and refuse their regular diet after all the pumpkins are gone, lol.

I had some ugly hedge type bushes in the back by my swimming pool and the neighbor kid came and cut them down then pulled up the stumps with his truck for $100, LOL, and I planted two peach trees there. Fast forward about 10 years and I have a dying Chinese Elm and a messy and bug ridden Box Elder that I want gone. For $100 he takes down the Chinese Elm, cuts it into transportable sized pieces and hauls away the brush, then fixes the pool fence where he dropped a limb on it. A couple of weeks later and several hours of work smarter, he wants $200 to take down the box elder. It's still way cheaper than those tree places, so it's a deal. He cuts down the old box elder, cuts the wood into pieces, transports it away and cleans up the brush, then fixes the pool fence AGAIN where he dropped a limb on it, LOL. I still have two stumps that need to be ground, so thanks for the reminder FOAS. Heck, if you were closer, I'd lend you a stump. (grin) Lars, here we have stump grinding services that come to your house and grind the stumps. They are in the phone book under "stump grinding" so I'm assuming it's probably in California too. I did do the "drill holes and fill with stuff that eats stumps" thing about 8 years ago when I took down the Chinese Elm. The stump is still there. Annie

So many misconceptions. First, the assumptions that Saturday will be cut... nope. Tuesday is the day they'll cut. Thinking it'll reduce staff? Nope. Some possible temp/part-time maybe but nothing significant. Some electrical/heating cost from the buildings being shut down. Think that they'll lose hours? Hardly. They're under contract, though it should be re-negotiated by someone with some guts. Our not using is causing them to have financial trouble??? That's totally laughable. The mismanagement, overpayment of employees, letting them work 3 hrs and day and get paid for 8+ OT... and they still have trouble with deliveries? LOL One of the local towns has the post office paychecks being sent FedEx... because they kept LOSING their own paychecks! I know a number of people who work at the, excuse me, are employed by the post office. I know a lot of the stuff that goes on there. Want to restore financial soundness? Cut back on unneeded management. Make all of them work the full 8 hrs instead of having someone else punch them out later, go take a nap and come back and other scams. Pay them what they're worth and no more. Quit giving incentives to do less, and give incentives to do more. Quit giving carriers a vehicle and then paying them mileage on their own vehicles. These are all normal and sound business practices for but when you're government subsidized you don't have fiscal accountability. Actually, having the post offices open 7 days a week would be a better option. Make it more convenient to use, and have people wait on customers instead of leaning on the counter in back watching. I do as much as I can by phone or internet and will do more and more as I can. We talk about all the bailouts from airlines to auto companies but forget about the ongoing bailout called the post office.

Seasonal Reminder... use those leaves!

All of you are doing a great service to your selves and your yards. Could I put in a plug for leaving some of the leaves intact, rather than shredding them all? Fallen leaves harbor valuable insect/pollinators in their overwintering forms. If you shred them, you destroy those butterflies and moths, etc. I owned an acre of oak trees, and one year didn’t get around to shredding, as we normally did. So, we had a huge pile of leaves over half of the front yard. The next summer, we had a dramatic increase in the number and diversity of birds visiting the yard, and I am convinced it was the increase in insects available for them to eat. The Xerces Society is urging everyone to “leave the leaves” to save our endangered pollinators. I don’t expect everyone to stop clearing their yards. But, if you have an area that could hold some piles of intact leaves, please consider it. Thanks for listening. Martha

They didn't leave bags here. Not sure if they're doing it here or not. I'll probably put something out anyway. Maybe shame her into taking it if she's planning on skipping it.

They didn't leave bags here.
They didn't/don't leave bags in advance. Think of the money that would be wasted because of so many bags not being filled.

The contributor provides the bag(s) or boxes. I was going to stuff my stuff into my rural mailbox, but think it might just be easier for my carrier in his car to grab a box left by the back door.

Our local grocery chain, based here in town, provides the bags. Just put mine out.

They used to leave bags here. It was hard getting the plastic bags to the curb for the pick up I just heard him out in front picking them up

Ran to the store last night to buy more stuff for the blue bag our postman left. I put it out last night so I wouldn't forget, loading it right from the trunk of my car. No need to bring the stuff in the house and then back out again. I try to buy mostly protein and veggies. Hope they like my picks. A customer at the store left 3 baked beans coupons on the shelf where the beans are, so I just used them and bought 3 large cans for the sack. That was nice too.

I put a out a box of one-pound coffee packages for my pickup. Not really nutritious, but I hope they'll give it out to someone who enjoys coffee. It was raining a little today but the box only looked a little wet. I usually put out a jar of peanut butter or a can of tuna.

I filled the blue bag that was left in the mailbox a couple of days ago, as I do every year. I tried to put a good variety of food, including a box of crackers, 2 cans of soup, tuna, beans, green beans, peas and carrots and fruit cocktail. Our food bank benefits so much from the efforts of the Postal Service!

I have a big bag sitting out by the mail box.....keep wondering when DH sees it and asks why I am giving away our food.

We took our kids and grandson out for lunch in town. On our drive back I looked to see how many mailboxes had food gift bags -- only about 5%.

I do think it makes more sense to give money to the Food Depository and not lug foodstuffs all over the earth. Maybe some people are happier putting out cans and would never send funds.
