label...a ha! moment

Just finished making a label for the landscape quilt and I was concerned that the backing would show through the muslin label. So....I thought, well, let's just put some interfacing behind the label to help prevent the show-thru.

While I was cutting out the interfacing the same size as the label, I had the "a ha" moment - stitch the interfacing and the label together on all the outer edges, trim the corners and the seam, cut a large slit in the interfacing *carefully*, then turn inside out, poke out the corners with my "Purple Thang" and press. Voila! A perfect label ready to hand sew on the back of the quilt.

I've done this before with applique which I call a "cheaters'" method, but it never occurred to me to do labels this way. You can use used dryer sheets in place of interfacing, too!

It's called faced applique. If you do it with fusible interfacing you can press it in place so that it can't shift while you stitch it down. Another method for getting good, "not goin' anywhere" edges is to dab them with starch and then press them. Nice stiff edges that stay in place while you sew them. This is the method I use for applique-as-you-quilt.

LOL! You are too young for senior moments. Wait until you are my age. I suspect it might be more of an overload of info that temporarily sidetracked your password, much easier to do at your age. When I was much younger and managing a store, I tried to set the alarm system and everything went dead. I went to an outside phone to call security and was suddenly surrounded by many policemen with drawn weapons. It turned out I had put in the wrong code, one from 20 years previous, and that code had told security that I was being robbed at gunpoint. Now I just use two passwords, one short and one long. It seems to be working except recently the ATM suddenly decided the PIN I have used for three years was incorrect. Glad I didn't lose my card or call the police again. Spring can't come soon enough!!

2 days ago , I had a petite Ah Ha moment. More of a ahem moment. Here in Texas , it is opposite world. Our major leaf drop , if you live under live oaks like I do, happens in March. That ialso just happens to be when I begin planting seeds outdoors in 4" pots. For years I have spent my morning coffee time picking seeds out of these pots. Either my small oaks have gotten a lot bigger or I have planted way more pots because this yea, it has been driving me nuts. Maybe I have just lost my patience and the zen-ness of the moment has given way to the onslaught of the reality of this nit picking time sink. Every year I forget about the leaves and put out my pots and consciousness comes leaf by leaf slowly as the drop slowly starts. On the second day of coffeee and stooping to nit pick leaves, that unused bug cloth that I wrap my tomatoes in kept coming to mind. I am slow. It still took another day to go and make that long walk to the pot ghetto for the cloth . Here's what a spring live oak leaf drop looks like. Not nearly as nice as a New England fall. The trees go a sickly yellow before the drop. No technicolor show. They will quickly follow it with some nice spring green. Leaflessness only lasts a week or so. Here is my solution to the yearly conundrum. The word "Dumb" comes to mind when I berate myself for the years that it took for me to get to this solution. Hmm I could work this into a poem. It now takes two minutes to flick the leaves off and I can even wait a day or two.

What do you usually put on your label? When I think about it, I've been all over the place in how I labelled my quilts and wall hangings.

I often embroider my name and the year; but if it goes in a show, I just type all the info on a pinked piece of cotton and baste it to the back at the bottom--that is what is requested. I haven't bothered to remove them on some. On my pictorial quilts with an Asian theme, I use a Chinese character as my signature. On the Arab hanging, I had the name of the piece in Arabic embroidered in the bottom border. I don't think I signed early quilts that I made as commissions. The ones I made later for the church auctions had some scripture embroidered, but that's all. If I were doing a commission piece now, I would include my name, the year and the name of the quilt.

I used to name my quilts, but that got too hard. Now I put the block name if I used a traditional block. I put "made for...." and "made by...." then I put the year I finished it, my city and state, sometimes USA. If it is given by a third person I put "given by...." also.

Great idea. Why didn't I think of that. I usually spend several minutes trying to iron under a 1/4" of the label so I can sew it down applique fashion.

I sign directly on the backing fabric if it's light enough to see the writing. I put my name, location and date, sometimes the name of the quilt and, if it's a gift, I include the name(s) of the recipient(s) and the occasion.

Too clever by far! One of those things many of us have done (sew the interfacing and then turn for applique) but then never THINK to use to put the label on!

Annie -- that's smart to write right on the back if it's light enough -- makes it harder for someone to steal the quilt and remove the label. (Not that I've had a lot of trouble with people wanting to steal my quilts...)

Sometimes I use Printed Treasures for labels, and print all the information on that with my inkjet printer. That fabric is very dense, so it's hard to turn the edges and applique on. No matter how careful I am, it always ends up a bit crooked. Now, you have a very good idea! I will do that with my next label!
