Anyone have a lcd tv/dvd combo to recommend?

I'm purchasing my first LCD TV. Just wondering whether anyone has one with the built-in DVD and how you like it. I hate to buy a TV online but can't find too many choices around here. (I also posted this on the electronics but that board moves much slower than this one.) Also wondering what else I should look for in an LCD. Thanks.

Don't plan on anything lasting a long time. They say 5 years for TV's and appliances is the norm now.

I tend to look for a more economical set now. Do you have a WalMart close by? You can order online or have site-to-store delivery.

I don't usually buy the warranty that goes with it. If you do, make sure to read the fine print. They don't always cover what you think they should.

Anytime you get a combination machine, you're asking for more trouble. Much better to get a separate DVD player; they are cheap. And if you follow the Electronics board, notice one thing---- don't buy anything Phillips/Magnavox! Everyone complains!

Hi,With all the changes coming down the pike in years to come, choosing a TV can be daunting. We are looking for three 19-20" LCD TVs to be used as secondary TVs for bathroom/bedroom/kitchen nook - just straight TV watching, no DVDs. We're on cable -- only the main TV having an actual set-top cable box; auxilliary TVs just use cable input. Apparently TVs under 26" are not required to have ATSC digital tuners, and I haven't found any small TVs that have them (although I'm seriously confused on this point). OK, so what to do here -- I don't want a set-top cable box for every little TV in the house when everyone goes digital. These auxillary TVs would presumably have NTSC tuners - how's that going to play out? What's the most economical strategy in the long run? Buy LCDs w/o the ATSC digital tuners and replace them all later? Will there be converters available to access digital signals w/o forking out extra bucks to the cable company for each TV? What screen ratio would be best to buy, 4:3 or 16:9? What makes the most sense for secondary straight TV watching (via cable connection)? Also would appreciate recommendations as far as brands -- LG? Samsung? Sharp? Sony?, etc.? It's all too confusing - can't even write a proper question! Thanks for any input.

Model Number MWC24T5 24 inch This TV is just a little over a year, used only about 5 times. It has no sound or pic. A repairman came to the house, said it was the power supply and replaced the part. TV worked for two days then the same thing happened. The same TV repairman came to the house and said that there was a wire loose, and tighten it. Another couple of days, the same thing no pic or sound. The same repairman came to the house, said he would have to take it in. He never came back and closed up shop. Through the Consumer Protection Agency I was able to get my TV back but with the same problem. Since it's not worth it to pay someone else to repair it nor is it worth it for me to file a law suit, I was wondering if anyone has any idea what the problem might be and/or what I can check for.

I feel your pain. It seems that most armoires these days are huge! I searched for 8 months for a small armoire for our bedroom. I ended up looking at a lot of gentlemen's armoires from the 1920's - 1940's. They are usually about 36" wide, 18-20" deep and 72" tall. I did see some that were wider and shorter, too. I found several on Craigslist and at antique stores. Wood finishes ranged from light oak to dark mahogany. Maybe something like this could work for you. Good luck. Lisa

We just went from a 27" crt tv to a 42" LCD Emerson (bought at WalMart on Black Friday) for Christmas. We LOVE it. It's not even hooked up to HD, just DirecTV. We've only seen HD on it when I get a blu-ray from NetFlix. We really love the picture. We also got a Sony blu-ray player that can stream NetFlix. We got the 4 Monster HDMI cables (5 feet) on Black Friday for $10.00 each. We also got a Wii, which we also love. The bowling is so much fun. We will probably get a Wii Fit for it, too. When we get back to MN, we will get a 46" Sony Bravia or a 50" Sanyo plasma. Our tv has a refresh rate of 60, it works for us. And it cost $398 on Black Friday. The LED and the plasma have beautiful pictures, but the LED is a jump in price. I think they will drop though, as the stores push 3D more. The LED is noticeably brighter than the LCDs, to me. But they all look wonderful in the big sizes compared to a 20 or 26" CRT tv. Like being at the movies!

Another vote for buying a DVD player and a TV. If something goes wrong with a combo, you're out two machines.

I too recommend buying separate units. It's just like the phone/answering machine combo. One or the other will go out first, and then you have to buy another combo unit which is more expensive than just having to replace a phone, or an answering machine.

We have a 32" Insignia from Best Buy that has a built-in DVD. We've only had it since December, but like it so far. I'm not sure how large you can go and still have the DVD built-in??? Insignia is a Best Buy brand. It was relatively inexpensive, too!

Thanks everyone. I guess I'm trying to avoid so many boxes/clutter, so the idea of a combined unit is attractive. But I also hear you loud and clear about one component going bad before the other. Well, I guess I'll just make the usual rounds to see what is available and/or on sale: Target, Sears, Best Buy etc. as well as scope some online sites. I wish I knew more about all this. . .but electronics is "not" my area.
