What do you keep in your 12' glass-door, upper cabs?

Now that our 12" ones are installed, I'm realizing that our old, dysfunctional kitchen must have had a non-standard depth on the uppers-- they were like caves (and working at the counter was like being in a cave since they created a cave-like space under them).

Our everyday plates are too big... these cabinets are glass, so I was thinking of keeping our decorative espresso cups and glasses in there.

Any other ideas?

The middle cabinet on my hutch is bumped out to 15 1/2" so I can keep plates, bowls, and china in that. The narrower 12" deep cabinets on the side hold glasses, mugs, coffee and tea cups, canisters of tea, sugar, splenda, etc:

My pantry is a smidge over 11 inches deep, but it holds all my baking supplies, canned and jarred food, recipe books, vases and lots more:

I hope we get to see some pictures today!! You must be so excited and everything is moving along so fast.

I have a 12 inch hutch, still working out what looks best in there. It's not one of my everyday cabinets so I have my nice wine and champagne glasses, china and decorative pieces in there. Some vases too.

Have fun planning were it all goes!

we have ikea cabinets, i put the plates in drawers - which I originally didn't plan to do, but when I went to ikea and saw a sample kitchen with it done... i loved it. ikea has these adjustable plate thingies that are pretty cool, i did get them, but now i realize i could have done without them because we are using the drawer liner stuff so i could just stack them and they wouldn't move around. but they are cool so i'm keeping them! i LOVE that the kids can get to the plates and bowls easier -- "Set the table" has never been so easy! The reason I switched to the drawers is because I wanted glass door uppers with interior lighting and needed to use glass shelves so the light would flow through. however, my plates are really thick heavy ones and I was afraid to overload the glass shelves. but again, i thought putting the plates in drawers would be awkward, but living with it... I LOVE IT. Oh, and I did split up my dishes because the are so heavy even on the drawers. so i have 6 in the upper drawer, 6 in the bottom, plus split up the bowls.

I am guessing that having the lowers light is a function of wanting to disguise the undesired oak on the lowers, not that you desire the look of lighter lowers. If that's correct, recently someone posted about having gel-stained cabinets to disguise an unattractive grain. I've included one link below. There is a picture of the finished cabinets in an espresso color, and they look beautiful. If that appeals to you, you could then do your lighter cream and glaze for your new uppers. Hope this helps. I learned something interesting from my contractor when we discussed mounting the wall cabinets a little higher so I could have enough space for certain appliances as well as a light rail. My contractor told me that I'd need to customize the cabinets by either reducing the height of the wall cabinets or increasing the height of the full-height cabinets (like the pantry and double oven cabinets.) Otherwise, mounting wall cabinets higher would result in cabinets where the tops don't line up. jayne p.s. I reduced the height of the wall cabinets to 34 1/2. I probably could have been fine with 35 inches but there's no way I would have known it until the end of the installation so better this way than not being able to cover the undercabinet lighting.

Our goal was not showing off stuff. Italian Double Satin Fibers--very subtle close up; we needed something to break up the amount of oak in the room, but didn't want it to be a strong design. If I had turned the patterned mugs, etc. a bit before snapping photo, you wouldn't see a lot, just the presence of the dishes. Color of item is a bigger issue than item shape when looking through a partially obscure glass if you want to NOT see stuff in cupboards, I think. I would probably choose a less expensive option if doing it again, but my #2 runner up "Dissymetry" seemed to have too much pattern when I was planning. Hi Positano,

My husband went to take pictures and realized the memory card was full and his computer was at work! I told him I was about to get booted off my kitchen support group for not posting pictures, so he'll try to take some pics today (we should have all the cabs in by this afternoon!)

Vases are a good idea-- the glasses look good in there too, erikanh.

I guess we can play around with it. I have a lot of salad plates-- 30+... I guess I could keep some in those cabinets since they are rather small.

I wish we had gone for a 15" cabinet... on the other hand, it would have been cave-y since these uppers are flanked by a fridge and a wall oven.

I've got these lining the tops of my cabs around the kitchen and will soon have the same dilemma! I'm planning on putting all my 'pretty' and shorter stuff: crystal, small vases, a couple of lladro statues?? who knows!! I think we'll have to play with it a bit. I just got to see them lighted up for the first time today!

Hey Danielle and Mairin, I've got the same problem! I've got 4 glass cabs for dishware, all 12" deep. In fact, all my uppers --except for those atop the fridge are only 12" deep. How is it that I had the help of an ID plus the KD at the cabinet vendor and no one thought to bring up the issue of cab depth for oversize items? I certainly didn't think about it! My plan now is to stock those cabs with glasses, bowls, some of my decorative items and some every day coffee mugs, dishes,etc. that can fit. Alas, the oversize items I was hoping to display in there will just have to be seen only when I put them to actual use. C'est la vie!

Erika, your solution of the 15 1/2" center bump out cab is a great one. Wish I, or at least someone on my team, had thought of it. Those glass cabs and your pantry look fantastic!

I love these photos! I originally thought I wouldn't want glass cabinets, but after seeing these I think I need more glass cabinets!

Erika, what do you keep in all of those great glass jars?

Hi Melanie~

The jars on the right hold baking ingredients: flour, sugar, brown sugar, confectioner's sugar, kosher salt, baking powder, baking soda, corn starch, unsweetened cocoa, shredded coconut, chocolate chips, raisins, walnuts, bread crumbs.

Jars on the left: rice and pasta!
