Thank You Re: Soap Scum Suggestion

Can't remember who suggested using a Magic Eraser and dish detergent to clean off shower doors--but a HUGE THANK YOU!!!(it was someone here, wasn't it?)

I don't have shower doors, but I do have brown ceramic tile (and a brown soap dish) in my shower--they're hard to clean and keep clean. Used the ME and detergent, and the soap scum washed off like.... well, magic!

Great suggestion. I really appreciate it!

do you think it would scratch acrylic (or plastic) builder grade bath/shower stall walls?

Finally! Last night I smeared a combination of hot vinegar (microwaved 2 minutes and an equal amount of blue Dawn. I had used it last year (guest bath only used once a year). I followed the directions, just let it sit and the bottom of the tub looked great. It did not budge the insane soap scum on the side of the tub. The tub was only used during Christmas vacation by our adult daughter who never cleaned. I was in panic mode tonight and saw someone above mention Awesome Cleaner from the Dollar Tree. I put a little water in the tub to wet the vinegar/dawn mixture from last night, swished my scrubber pad in it to wet it. Poured Awesome powder on it and thanked God because it worked! I could not believe it worked and was in panic mode because my daughter is bringing her boyfriend in town with her! Now if I could just get the rest of the house presentable!

ust some general bathroom help is if you just keep a, you know, your disinfectant and an all-purpose cleaner and a rag just in every bathroom, but specifically the guest bathroom. That way you can just go in and tidy up when unexpected guests come. It's kind of easier to get away for a minute if you already have the supplies in there. To help keep your bathroom smelling fresh, you can always get a fabric softener sheet and just put it in the bottom of the wastebasket, replace it about once a week. I understand that some water systems supply very hard water. Ours is at the medium point but I myself would never have a water softener installed. I hate the feeling that softened water produces, of being unable to rinse off soap and shampoo when showering. And making the shower floor slippery. We once bought a house that had a water softener installed. The seller had commented that the water in that area was very hard. I activated the bypass after a week and then had it removed. Some hotels have overly soft water too. I make a mental note of those so that I can stay elsewhere on any return visit to the area. Hard water can often taste better to drink because various minerals contribute to the flavor. Some water bottlers add minerals to the product for that very reason. Try drinking distilled water sometime, it's tasteless and not very enjoyable. The spring water we buy to drink is loaded with minerals and is very flavorful. Ditto regarding resurrecting old threads. Better to start a new conversation if the old one is getting moldy.

Hello...Had to do the same as you and recaulk shower walls to bathtub and used a good commercial bathroom cleaner and a scotch brite pad and scrubbed well. Rinse clean and then dried with a towel, I then used 100% acetone on a rag to clean the region to be caulked, but check first to make sure the acetone won't dissolve your tub surround material! Use a q-tip in a tiny out of the way spot and rub surface to see if it attacks the plastic...if it dulls it or comes off on the q-tip then use alcohol instead. I did this twice, then blowed dried the joint well with hot hair dryer to make sure no water was present. Then used a bathroom grade 100% silicone caulk which prevents mildew from forming. Read the labels carefully as many silicone products don't retard mildew growth...it should say bathroom on the label. Best regards, Mark in Buffalo

I shared the hint that I found on the cleaning site here. I don't remember who shared it there. It has been the answer to my years long struggle to clean our master shower doors. In a pinch the other day, I recleaned the shower with a Magic Eraser moistened with undiluted cheap shampoo. That worked too. Glad you liked the suggestion too.

Argh, those magic erasers (combined with anything) do absolutely nothing for my shower scum...I must have very special scum. LOL

We use the shower spray that's made to spray after each shower. It keeps it clean without much work. I think we use the Arm & Hammer brand but there are several out there.

Put white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray on. Works great!

The very best cleaner I have ever found is Easy Off Oven Cleaner, in the blue can, fume free. I have a fiberglass shower and that stuff works great let me tell you... I have been using it for about 3 years now and the chrome fixtures etc still look great, it does not harm them. I spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes then what ever tool you normally use as a scrubber... but it does not take much elbow grease.
