soap scum on tub

What do you find the best thing to use to clean soap scum on a tub. My son has bought a home with a pink tub, and it really is a mess with scum.

I just bought my first bottle of Kaboom at Home Depot and used it on my acryllic stall shower and I am impressed. There was a smudgy ring around the drain which looked to me like it was imbedded forever. I've used various other products, can't remember them all, Oxyclean was one of them and they only barely phased the smudge. But...with Kaboom, it worked great. The directions say not to leave it on but to rinse and redo if this stain isn't gone. That was what I did. Kind of makes you wonder why you shouldn't leave it on? But in any event, I'm sold on the product.

once clean, buy a case of Dial Clean Rinse, it leave the bather clean and the tub/shower sparkling. I used in a hotel whirlpool, and it cleaned the jets so well, I won't use a whirlpool tub again! What a shock!

Take a look at any WalMart, Target, Depot or Lowes for a perforated bath mat. With a refinished tub, you should lift any mat regularly and hang over the skirt or on a towel bar so the water/soap scum won't fester underneath which will cause staining. Todd Stull Enola, PA

You might want to try Charlie's Soap general cleaner. If you will spray it on the tub and let it sit while you clean the rest of the bathroom, all you'll have to do is wipe down the tub, then rinse. This cleaner doesn't 'power' through like other cleaners, but if let to sit will do it's thing with little work on your part, then rinse down the drain. Hey Folks, That was me that mentioned the soap dish being dated. It was tongue in cheek, I really am not a slave to what is and what isn't dated! LOL But, in my defense, I was referring to the chrome soap dish recessed into the bath wall directly in line of fire of the shower head, where in one kid's long hot shower, the entire bar of soap can disintegrate! You know, the one that matches the toilet roll holder! (I still have said TR holder in the last remaining non-renoed BR) I actually was voicing one of my pet peeves, and it was more about the location of said soap dish. Though, really, if I was spending thousands of dollars on a new BR I would never put one of those metal recessed soap dishes in there, regardless of how many bars of soap I may use! I personally have hung shower baskets over the shower head, I thought that's where everybody put them! There's a super duper model on sale right now in my Costco! But, my Basement Br has a 4 foot long shelf, and I will never go back... my new Master BR will prob have 2 narrow but tall niches (ie 2 shelves) on shower head wall. (only interior wall in shower).

You water supply may have rust in it. Our first house had rusty water, we used filters to remove it. Maybe get a water test done from a water conditioner company. If you do have rust, its not a health issue, but it will stain your fixtures and clothing.

I finally bit the bullet and joined the melaleuca club, so I use their tub and tile cleaner- and not only did it work on my (modern era) tub and shower - even got out the dye residue from me doing my hair in the sink...

but it did wonders on the 60's pink Crane tub at my folk's house, which had a buildup that was half hard water, half soap scum (looked like Lost River Caverns under the faucet)

but, believe it or not, suave dandruff shampoo works great in a pinch ;)

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - I learned about it right here on this forum and it is a miracle product in my eyes!

Once it's clean, switch to liquid soaps. No soap scum. It's really amazing.

Use the cheap, cheap dandruff shampoo to clean the tub of soap scum. It is easy to rinse also!!

Ditto on Joann's comment. We stopped using bar soap after remodeling the bath 10 years ago - on the suggestion of our contractor, we switched to liquid. I am not the best about cleaning the shower, yet in 10 years, we have never had a speck of soap scum. They say that the talc in bar soap causes it.

Anyone have the recipe for cleaning using vinegar? (shower door...does it also work on soap scum on shower tiles?)

I just use tilex soap scum remover or soft scrub. Both seem to work fine.
