Bump out windows, window treatments

I know I am in a BIG minority, but I think I want to add some window treatments to my kitchen. I am quite monochromatic and while soothing, I sort of miss the warmth of a fabric accent to bring in a peek of color. My color is currently highly dependent upon how many fruits/vegetables are laying around and thats a not a great design strategy. I'm not talking crazy big things, but maybe a french valance over the bay window and a roman shade in a floral over the sink. I added the floral part to make people crazy but its true, the fabric I like right now is floral. It's cool flax/linen though!

Anyway, my issue is that I have counter height windows and an 8 inch bump out. Where does one mount shades in this situation? I would THINK I do it inside the casing close to the glass but I cannot think of a single instance of having seen this. Does ANYONE have any photos of window treatments at a bump out?

Hard to find what you're looking for, I know. The Ministry of No Treatments will soon be calling you in for questioning, and then they'll send you to the Bureau of We-Don't-Need-Privacy-We-All-Have-500-Acres for reeducation. One poor woman stumbled in here looking for window treatment suggestions to shield her daughter, whose medical condition required her to avoid sunlight, and was treated to clucking tongues and about a thousand pics of naked windows.

I think with counter height windows you should be very careful about fabric shades going down to the counter, especially if it's near a sink. Messy. Valance, panels or whatever gets the fabric away from the muck, then some sort of less fabricy shade or blind for privacy and light control. You have more latitude if your windows are well away from whirling chocolate cake batter and spurting chickens.

Yes, I remember the thread with the woman's daughter! She did later recant a personal love of window treatments and reiterated that if not for her daughter, she would have never have broached the subject.

In truth, I doubt i will ever lower the shades, but I thought functional appearing shades might be better than those that are clearly decorative. But I dont know. They cost a fortune through the online store I found the fabric. I might have to resign myself to only valances or to sewing and its been many many years.

Thanks for the photo, I think it looks nice! But my bump out is bigger. I will try to take a pix if my camera phone will start to focus. Latest software update ruined focus. PITA.

We skipped the bumpout to keep costs down. You're right, it looks nice, but since it wasn't needed, we skipped it to splurge on other things in the kitchen.

I think I'm getting closer. I found this picture of joan2121's kitchen during naptime today. I am in love. I can see tile samples over her range, so I'm guessing she hadn't gotten to the backsplash yet when the pictures were taken. I haven't been able to find a more recent picture to see how or if she tiles the space behind the sink. I don't have quite the expanse of windows like she does, but I think it would still be wonderful. I looked up on my official plans, and we're supposed to have two 2' double hung windows behind the sink with transoms above. I wonder if it's too late to make it a 5' space with a 15" window, a 30" window in the middle, and another 15" window. Do windows even come in those sizes? Well, something like that. A bigger picture window in the middle that doesn't need to open, flanked by two smaller windows that can be opened. Would I still want a transom above? We will have 10' ceilings so I think there will be plenty of space. What do you think? Is this possible? Is my builder going to tell me I'm crazy or that it's going to cost a million bucks? There can be molding both directly at the window plane or at the wall plane, or both, or neither. The boxing out is basically an "extension jamb" at this depth, and molding at the window isn't really needed (used basically to eliminate a shadow box effect with jambs over 1 foot deep) Another approach is to angle the jambs somewhat (splayed jambs) so the angle of view is increased. If you want to hang curtains or blinds at the window plane, some amount of trim would be needed, like 2" or so. Then the regular casing used everywhere else in the room would run around the wall plane perimeter. IMO, it looks best not to crowd the window too much by having the cabinets abut directly. (I bent this rule in my own kitchen owing to very wide old-house trim (5") and a crying need to squeeze wall cabinets in; I had to customize some of the trim to 4 1/2" , and then cut some of it back to the cabinet edges. You can use drapes, with a long rod above the window so the panels fall on each side of the alcove. That may be all you need. If you absolutely have to have a shade of some sort you could use a brown roller shade inside the alcove. I would not use a roman shade - if mounted out side the alcove it would look odd because it would hang so far out from the window, and if mounted inside the window it will remove too much light even when fully open.

Inside mount shades are not that unusual. They are often not the top pick because they violate one of the unofficial rules of window treatments, which is to make your window look bigger. Considering what window treatments cost, you might as well go ahead and actually make the window bigger. Anyway, you may not need, and probably can't accommodate, outside mount, but inside mount is perfectly respectable and nice looking. Check out the Smith + Noble website for pics.

adh- I can't say I did the over the sink route, but I can tell you I too like the functionality of a roman shade, although I never actually lower them. I like the valance look they provide, without the fussy appearance of a valance- if that makes sense! I made my roman shades for my kitchen nook windows from mini-blinds (no-sewing)and it was really pretty easy. You can google for it to find step by step directions. The nice part is that it is really inexpensive, and so if you decide you don't like it after all, you won't feel obligated to keep it.
