Umbrella Pole Material for Baja Shelf Sleeve

We have an umbrella sleeve in a Baja Shelf and want to know if there are umbrellas made specifically for this application.

It's a Salt Water Chlorine Generator pool.

I've read that wood can swell and get stuck or crack from strong winds. Aluminum would likely have some corrosion.

Are there and PVC coated wood or aluminum poles on umbrellas made for use inside pools?

My aluminum sunbrella umbrella (purchased from Costco) is on it's third summer in our SWG pool with no problems so far. We know it can corrode over time, but figure that the umbrella fabric will also only last a few years and the Costco umbrellas were only $99, so it's worth the corrosive risk. I feel the same way about the Overstock umbrellas. To me it wasn't worth the cost of the resin/durateak umbrellas.

We have an umbrella that is aluminum and works just fine. We got it from Overstock.com, it has held up really well for several years. You are right about wood; we made that mistake with our first umbrella!

Aluminum will corrode in a salt solution. In fact, you can put a few pieces of salt on a piece of aluminum foil with moisture and it usually will eat a hole through it in less than a week. But there are different alloys and the react differently.

We are about to remodel our pool and have these "wedding cake" type steps that I want to replace with a larger "Carribean shelf/Baja shelf" as well. The sleeve for an umbrella seems like a must. With regard to kids using it, my two are now teenagers and they don't seem to like anything we, as their parents, decide to do.....so I'm making my decision independent of their likes or dislikes. However, one big reason I would like to have this in the pool is for our labrador retrievers. If you let dogs use your pool, it's a bonus for them.

Umbrella pole extender???

What solutions do people use when they need to extend the height of umbrellas? Some of my customers have baja shelves about 18" below the deck of the pool and when you stick an umbrella in the hole, it is about chin height for most adults walking on the deck (ouch). I have used galvanized conduit sleeves to extend the height but eventually the customers complain because it starts rusting. Does anyone make an adjustable plastic umbrella pole extender?

Ours is about 8" deep. Our shelf is used mainly for the old farts that come over that don't want to get wet. LOL. Seriously, it's great for that and for, like today, it's 82 degrees in Michigan. The pool is too cold - 66 degrees - to swim in but I put a chair in there and rested my tired, hot feet after a run. Little kids like the shelf but only for a short time. It's the old people and the ladies who didn't bring a suit* who like it the most. *I think a lot of the ladies who said they forgot a suit are just self conscious. But I know, on a hot day, they appreciate being able to sit in a comfy chair, feet in the water, margarita in hand and feel like part of the party that's floating in the pool. Best part is, we have two bubblers on the shelf that are awesome foot massagers when seated in a chair.

When does umbrella sleeve get put in??

Exposed Aggregate is pea gravel...but it's in concrete....very common here in Houston. It is very easy for the guys pouring the deck. They just set a PVC pipe in the ground and pour around it. All of the pipes are the perfect size to accommodate the umbrella pole. So I guess you can say they are universal in size. We told the PB we wanted 3 and he said No Biggie. I know they weren't in the contract, but he told me just to tell the deck guys and tell them where I wanted them and so I did......it's so easy for them and probably a minimal cost. I have read on here that some people have paid $20-40 for each one, but I assume your PB would put them in no charge since the other one was forgotten. I would just tell the deck guys and they should add them. It does work best with a concrete based decking as they just pour the cement around the pipe and that is it. I will try to take a pic for you and post it on here later today. Just remember if you place the umb. sleeve in the decking, it needs to be 3 inches from the coping....probably for strength and to protect the coping.....makes sense, but I just can't explain it. Hope this helps....something so simple is something I could not live without.... Pics later...

If wood can swell and get stuck in the sleeve and Aluminum can carrode in the salt water solution, what material do you reccomend for the umbrella pole and where can I find it.

Our local pool store has a pole made of a resin, which will not corrode. I imagine that there are fiberglass poles out there too. The resin is a very dense type of plastic.

Do you know the brand of the umbrella with a resin pole?

I did find one company that makes some umbrellas with fiberglass poles. The company is called Tuuci. Their DuraTeak model has a fiberglass pole: www.tuuci.com/collection_durateak.html. From what I can find on the web, it's extremly expensive.

You might also be able to just clear coat epoxy your wooden pole....thus making it water proof.

My wood umbrella has worked fine for 7 years but it just broke and the base is stuck in the hole. And recommendations on how to get it out? Drain the pool down and drill it?

Just drill the wood out. Use a slightly smaller drill bit than the hole. You can use extensions, or drain the pool a little. After you drill it you can use chisel to break it up and pull it out in pieces.
