QOTD: Have you made something because you saw it here?

I have been wondering have many people have gotten their inspriation to make a project because they have seen it pictured or discussed on this forum.

I know that I have had several, especially the disappearing 9 patch quilt, crumbs, 4 to 9 patch (my favorite), and rag quilts.

Disappearing 9 patch was definitely from this site, as I'd never seen one before - and I've made several.

4 to 9 may possibly happen, but I don't like that one as much.

For me it's the disappearing 9 patch and the use of 1930s fabrics. And using a small accent border between the pieced top and the larger outer border. And using different threads.
Oh yeah, and it was here that I was inspired to first try free motion quilting!!! Wow, looking back I would have to say you quilters are a bad influence! I wouldn't have spent nearly as much money if you hadn't lead me astray.

I got the "potato tubs" from Pinetree Seeds with my usual seed order back in winter. I liked the idea because they fold back down after use. They're by "Gardman" and you can buy them all over the web. Later, my local Agway had them on deep sale, so I got 2 more. I have 3 for potatoes and 3 that will have sweet potatoes when the s.p. slips come in a day or two. (S.P.s like it hot - let's see if they work at all in New Hampshire.) I'm a total potato newbie since this is my first year, but here's what I know. I think you're supposed to start potatoes really early, so you prolly need short season ones now. Not sure if the ones you've mentioned are - a Google search will help you figure that out. We started ours what turned out to be a couple weeks later than usual for around here. They do grow slowly, and we didn't see any growth above ground for quite a while. I've already added soil 1x like the poster above mentioned doing when they got tall. (Actually, I just did that today.) I put in 5 per container, like the directions I have said. (I think I have an article from the web?) You can cut each potato into parts, so long as each part has at least 2 eyes and is a decent sized chunk - sorry, can't remember how big each chunk needs to be. Don't let them cure like some articles/advice tells you - ours rotted in the 2 days they were curing. Our 2nd batch, which we planted right after cutting, is doing fine. You could use any container, really. I've ordered some "Smart Pots" to expand my garden this year. On the Smart Pots website, it also talks about using them for potatoes. Good luck!

Patty, I wish I'd saved some tins. The Altoids ones made into little scenes, or shrines, are just sweet as can be. I saw some mermaid ones that I'd like to copy. Also saw some memory type tins in memory of a deceased loved one, and I want to make one with the "feather from an angels wing". It's getting harder to find old jewelry these days to use for embellishments. Cute idea for dog treats for small dogs. And tooth fairy tins, I've seen little boxes for sale for big bucks for baby teeth and to save baby curls in.

ice cream in a bag is fun - been there, done that with my gs ice cream in a bag 1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 cup milk or half & half 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 6 tablespoons rock salt **** can use regular table salt, I have 1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc) 1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag Ice cubes How to make it: Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully. *****I PUT THE BAGS IN FREEZER FOR A BIT TO MAKE THE ICE CREAM FIRMER Tips: A 1/2 cup milk will make about 1 scoop of ice cream, so double the recipe if you want more. But don't increase the proportions more that that -- a large amount might be too big for kids to pick-up because the ice itself is heavy.

"Art is one of the few things DH likes to "shop" for"-how similar..and how lucky I must say, as most of our art was also found while traveling together, and oh, each time is so wonderful..frankly wonderful whether we actually can buy something or not. I still remember everyhing we admired together but couldn't afford..and yes we both regret things we could afford but didn't buy..:) and yes, art, ceramics, netsuke-yes I simply need them in my life. Add books to that too. My DH is an extremely savvy person-yet he'll never say "no" to a book..he understands this. Do I feel guilty? no, not at all if I'm up and leave again-that's what I'll take with me, after all..Well besides my husband:) and kids if they'll want to.. one smart person-actually my boss, one of several..I was blessed with very smart work supervisors all my professional life...he said "The feeling of home comes from these very things you don't exactly need to survive" There are levels of need..and the basics, we all know them, and they should be there since without them it's obviously really hard to strive for something else. Even just wanting, dreaming, wishing for, admiring-you already have something extremely important. You might not realize it until you don't.. You might meet people that don't have it. They don't have it. Sometimes not at the moment, sometimes not for years. They're so deeply buried inside, so hurt, that outside doesn't touch them. It's not how we're intended to be. It's awfully sad. It's also extremely scary when one doesn't feel himself..as somebody existing and separate you know?.. you're also not exactly into wishing for things while in that state.. so, yes, in my mind -even to want to buy somethiing you "simply need in your life", it's a blessing..it's a star in the sky..it seems so little amongst other stars, you don't know its name and its meaning..but the meaning is actually there and it's huge..you're alive, you're connected, and you want to continue to be.

Don't forget Quilts for Kids organization! Love them and love to do quilts for them. I told my LQS owner about them and she had me stand in front of two of her classes and talk about the organization and show them the quilt kit that is sent. It spread like wildfire among her customers. She also donates her long arm quilting and batting to anyone who brings a QFK quilt to her. I believe she did around 75 quilts last year.

This was the first forum I was ever on and it started with a question to see if anyone could help me find specific quilt block patterns for a memory quilt my friend wanted me to make for her. Someone pointed me to a tennis racket pattern! I ended up having to make up many of the patterns like for a telephone, bowling, stethoscope, etc.!

I' m working on crumb quilt. I never thought about saving scraps until I saw the thread here. Also scrappy quilts. I over plan and get stressed about where everything should go. I love looking at other people's work.

Oh my gosh! I have gotten so much inspiration from seeing everyone's work, the ideas shared and the patterns with instructions that everyone shares. My list is very, very long of the things I have made because of either reading or seeing what others have done. I have adapted many of the ideas in my quilts.

I have tried many new things thanks to the Birthday Block swaps. But the D9P was the first quilt I made because I saw it here.

Yes, I made a bow tie quilt out of batiks when I saw on here. I'm sure there have been others but I can't recall right now.

Oh yes! I don't remember all of them but there are a few I can think of to lay blame to! Gwen for the crumbs, Toolgranny Linda for Homespun Stars, Caroline for all those tablerunners and her tute on lattice, Teresa for the Shooting Star and getting me started on scrappy quilts, Mary_c for getting me started making tops for QOV, LindaOH for that thread on Wonky Pinwheels, Rosa is a troublemaker with all the neat things she makes, Vicky's Carpenter's Square and of course the D9P and jars.

These are not all of them by far! Ya'll are a bunch of enablers! @:) And I love it!!!! lol

I agree I have gotten so much inspiration from this forum over the years. I love looking at all of the pics and posts of different techniques, tools, and patterns.
My quilting life has been touched by every member here. I get excited when I find something to share here and I know yus guys do too. My biggy from this forum is going scrappy! I was very planned before and now I love scrappy quilts.
