Bubblers flailing on baja shelf

We are swimming in our new pool build now. There are still some outstanding punch list items. I recently talked to our sup. about how our 2 bubblers on our baja shelf seem to start flailing around crazy after being on for a little while. He said it's due to water turbulence and that the bubblers are having a hard time pushing up straight once the water gets churned up and the wave action is really good. His solution was to drop the water level in the pool. He suggested 1-2". That seems like a lot, since we only have 5" our our baja shelf as it is!! (We originally wanted 8" depth on the shelf, and that was something that didn't happen in the pool build.) Are there any other solutions?

They have already adjusted the bubbler nozzle size to a smaller size. I really don't want to drop the water level. The bubblers seem to work fine for about 30 minutes when the pump is on high. I'm not sure if it's the wind combination or what. Our baja shelf is 17' wide and approx 5' long. We have a rectangular pool 17x34.

What type of bubbler cover are you using? Is there an actuator devoted to the operation of the bubbler?

I believe they have tried 1" bubbler covers and 1/2" covers. The 1" bubbler covers don't do much when the pump is on low speed, which is most of the time it is running. The 1/2" bubbler covers result in a higher bubbler feature, but the flailing around (turbulence).
I don't believe there is an actuator devoted to the bubbler. I"m not quite sure how to get a straight answer. The bubblers bubble when the pump is on, always.

Two people from the pool company told us they have never seen this before. Our pool is 17' wide and the tanning ledge is the width, then 5' across. There are 2 bubblers on that tanning ledge. Could it be that people normally only have one bubbler?? I'm very disappointed in the look of the bubblers. 1) they don't operate very high unless pump is on high speed. 2) when they are a decent amount high, they flail around like crazy. Regardless of the pump on high or low speed.

Not sure if this matters -- we have 2 bubblers, 2 deck jets, and 2 aerators. We only want to operate the aerators at times when the water is too warm, so we don't mind doing that manually (not via the remote). They are telling us that the remote is full already and there is not room to have the bubblers turn on. The pump primes at high speed for 3 minutes, then goes to low speed. It's such a pain on the remote to go through the long menu path to get to the place to change the pump to run at 3450 rpms. And that's the only way I can have the bubblers run at the higher level. :(

We are about to remodel our pool and have these "wedding cake" type steps that I want to replace with a larger "Carribean shelf/Baja shelf" as well. The sleeve for an umbrella seems like a must. With regard to kids using it, my two are now teenagers and they don't seem to like anything we, as their parents, decide to do.....so I'm making my decision independent of their likes or dislikes. However, one big reason I would like to have this in the pool is for our labrador retrievers. If you let dogs use your pool, it's a bonus for them.

My builder put in 3 bubblers on our sunshelf for free. The water turned out to be too deep for them to do much without adding risers, but not really a big deal since we didn't pay extra for them. We have 2 umbrella sleeves on our sunshelf as well, but don't have a thatched umbrella so I can't offer any advice there.

I am by no means a pool expert like David and ricerocket, just a person in the middle of a pool build. I can tell you they are 100% correct. When I told my PB I wanted a sun shelf/tanning ledge his only question was "how big do you want it?". He never even mentioned that I had to get an in floor cleaner. We are getting the Polaris 3900 Sport and one of the 3 returns will be in the tanning ledge. Simple as that. For $5200 I would say i am going to take the pool brush and brush off the shelf myself. AND I will be adding a 7' raised spa (raised 18") with 2 spillovers and it is only costing me 11K. I had 5 PB's in to get quotes and the one that sold the in floor system pushed it really hard (annoyingly hard). The other guys weren't as sold on it. It's not that they said ti was bad-it was just a lot of money for what it is. BTW-I live in MD and I think pool prices are VERY high here compared to other parts of the country (TX, AZ, FL) where there is more competition.

pooltile cleaner, Welcome to the board, I'm certain your link would be of some value to the OP if the question was about how to properly address mineral buildup on the waterline. But with the topic being sunshelves it came across to me as SPAM. However the info in your paragraph was good info for the OP. I had been on this board as Huskyrider for a long time before they booted me off for having my E-mail address visible on a reply. They allowed me back on again under my new name. I'd hate to see the same happen to you. There's no doubt in my mind that you have a lot to offer the membership with your insight. Marta, I always charge extra for a sunshelf or baja ledge. The extra costs come from the excavator who must sculpt the sunshelf as he digs, the steel man who places rebar on the rise and tread of the shelf, the guniter who shoots and trims the concrete, and the plaster guy who plasters it. A shelf of your size costs me about 400+- additional on my construction costs and resells to the customer for 500. For a buyer I'd call them a must have item on a new concrete pool. DIYpoolpro is correct about the importance of the steel reinforcement, especially in expansive soil like Fighting Irish described. On the additives he described my preference is fiberglass mixed into the matrix. Congrats on the new pool!!! See ya, Kelly

The pool school tech changed the bubbler fittings to 1/4" and they seem to be doing much better!!

And no, we definitely do no have an actuator for the bubblers. When the pump is on, the bubblers are on. While the cleaner or deck jets are on, the pump would operate in high speed and therefore the bubblers would also. Otherwise, I have to adjust the pump speed on the pump.

Hey, I hope im not too late, but I had this same problem recently. I found out that its actually due to the turbulence of the water rippling back from the walls... Check out this video, it looks like this company just came out with a replacement bubbler that pops out and fixes this issue.
