A few questions....
Comments (7)"Umbrella sleeve on sunshelf (baja shelf to some)in the water? Is it better to have the sleeve actually on the concrete deck? I'm concerned that umbrella movement might damage the plaster." Our PB will not install umbrella sleeves underwater for this reason. We can have some REALLY high winds here in north central TX and the PB said if someone forgets and leaves their umbrella open during high winds that it can indeed tear up the plaster around the sleeve. We put a deck sleeve in right next to one of the benches and it provides plenty of shade in the pool and on part of the deck. ==And last, any idea of the price difference/upgrade to go with a 2 speed or variable speed pump from a 2 h.p.? Slightly worried about electric cost w/ the 2h.p.== I don't know the cost, but you should most consider it. 2 hp pumps can really draw some juice!...See MoreDecking Questions...
Comments (19)Michelle16: Thanks for getting back to me. That is a pretty good deal for the Inca. Everyone I talked to around here said it was really hard to install (the cost for the Inca itself isn't that much more then the other products in the grand scheme of things) due to the varying heights of the pavers. In fact, almost everyone I talked to tried to talk me out of using it, even though they have installed it many times. We had a chance to see Blu installed and to see various pool installs with it and really like it (we are going to go with a mix of shale grey and champlain)...Also, we are getting a really good deal. BTW, as an update to this whole thread: We chose to not go through the pool builder for decking. The reasons where as following: We didn't really know what product we wanted (we knew we liked Inca, but didn't see anything else we liked). Our PB has been great about pool stuff, but as far as decking, we just didn't get the sit down time for going over decking options (and pricing)...Even after excavation (before gunite), I hadn't gotten a single price even on INCA. We go to the point where we were really frustrated. Didn't know what the project was going to cost and didn't have a good idea what the complete thing would look like (other then the pool). When I got wind that Inca could cost me $31k for the decking alone, I was pretty worried. One of our good friends is friends with the owner of Triad Associates (they do decking, walls, pool finishes, etc) and kept telling us to just give them a call and ask them for ideas (and pricing). It turns out that we had met the owner at a Super Bowl part earlier this year. Either way, we also found out that our favorite pool done by our PB (in Inca no less) had Triad do the deck work (and the pool finish). Once we figured that out, it made us realize that our two companies work together all the time and it wouldn't be as much as an issue as I thought. So, in 10 minutes with Triad, we had seen all the different materials installed (so we could walk on it, etc) and had the different pricing options. Now we have a great design and our "Pool Studio" designs have been updated to reflect the exact materials we will be using (for the most part). I know it is more of a pain for our PB, but having a middle man when deciding one something expensive as this for our backyard really gets in the way. We saw samples, had pricing, got to see all the different products all in one stop and my wife went from being worried about what things would look like in the end, to being very happy about what it will look like (if things look like the plans). I am sure we are saving money, but I can't say how much because I never got a price for the decking from our PB (just ranges for the different product types). I am not un-happy with the pool builder, but IMHO, they are good at pools (and overall design) and the people that do decking (and will be doing our retaining walls and River Rok finish) do that all the time, so they are good at that....See MorePool/spa specs - Please comment! Comments (13)Now that we have the pool, a few things I wish we did differently. 1. Direct pool filler line from water source. (ours is a private well) During the summer, we have evaporation and need to top off the pool. It is a pain dragging the hose. 2. More lights. They gave us one, and wouldn't do LED. I would put more than one make it LED color changing. Would look great at night. 3. Yes, the Pebble tec looks cool. Yes the Pebble tec is rough on the feet. You get used to it, but guests are confused by it. If pebble sheen is smoother, I would go with it. 4. Make the pool deep enough for diving. Even though you may say no diving, kids will. You don't want any terrible accidents. 5.The deck...We did exposed aggregate too. Looks great, a little rough on the feet to get used to, but I think it is the nicest choice for the long run. It will look good forever. BUT, we expanded what they gave us in the contract, and it really could still be bigger. You want to gather around the pool, have enough room for tables, chairs, and chaises. They nickeled and dimed us to death on the measurements for the deck. Make it bigger than you think you will need. 6. Wish we did a spa. Even though we are not spa people, I think guests really like them, and they complete the backyard oasis theme. We did a small waterfall instead. What are you doing for a fence? We have the Jerrith surrounding the pool with 2 gates. We think they built us a nice pool. It was stressful, though. Expect to go overbudget on it. We went over on the electrical, fence, stone, and gravel. We also spent a lot on landscaping, outdoor furniture and outdoor lighting after the pool was done Also, fill it yourself unless you are on very expensive municipal water. Trucked in water was overpriced, but I think they push it so they can just call the pool totally finished quicker. Also, we are happy with the in floor system....See MoreNew Pool Build in Pasadena, CA - June 16, 2015
Comments (67)Hi Frank. Masterpiece did the design too, which ended up having approximately 3 revisions before it was perfected. This was done during the vendor evaluation phase before we signed a contract. I was glad they understand customers want to have the design and approve it before making a choice on the builder. Besides, how are builders supposed to give you a bid without having a design to price out? Most of the vendors we met with did this, except 1 fancy-pants builder who wanted us to pay him $500 to come up with a design. That didn't appeal to us. For the landscaping side of the project, it was done by a company that is owned by an employee of Masterpiece, Ron Bond. Ron is the designer and salesman for Masterpiece so we put in a lot of hours with him and knew him well. Technically the landscaping was done by a different company, but in reality it was seamless and is easier for me to say the whole project was done by Masterpiece due to the relationships. I paid Ron's company directly for the landscaping work and he has good prices and of course intimate knowledge in the entire project scope. Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you. We are really happy with our pool, spa, landscaping and the whole build process (minus the city inspectors... LOL). There are 3 other families in our little group who have signed with Masterpiece too and are in varying stages of their builds (we got to know 2 of these families through Houzz - 1 during our vendor eval process & the other from this specific blog -- Houzz is so helpful!). I'm very happy for them and for Masterpiece because our new friends are in good hands with Masterpiece, and Masterpiece has earned my respect and appreciation so I'm glad to see a healthy backlog for them too. Good luck with your project! I'd love to follow you so please let me know when you get started....See MoreMPK 09
