Ideas for whimsical boardwalk/beach bedroom?

Back in January, I asked for thoughts on what color might have been used in this bedroom:

I eventually found out the color is Benjamin Moore's Pre-Dawn Sky.

I never did get down to our local BM store but found what I think turned out to be a nice substitute in Valspar's "Beet".

I recently acquired this canvas by Colleen Karis that I am planning to use as a "theme" for my daughter's room. She's not yet in it (3 yr old sharing with her twin brother in the "nursery") so for now it's being used as a guest room (rare) but I'm slowly putting her stuff in there - mostly in the dresser, though.

It's a work in progress but I'm kind of stumped on what to add without making it too kitschy. The strand of white Christmas lights along the dresser mirror will be coming down. I'm planning on painting the border of the mirror something to contrast with the Beet.

Along the wall (painted Valspar's Helio Prism - a pinkish-lav) with the windows, I'm planning on hanging colored strands beads from Mexican paper flowers. The ones up there now were my trial run. I need to get more colors. I have 4 strands of beads but may pick up some more.

I found a couple of bird pillows that reminded me of the red bird in the upper left-hand corner of the canvas.

Any other ideas?

Love the canvas and the Mexican paper flowers!

Don't know if this is kitschy or not, but how about an upside down (small) beach umbrella hanging from the ceiling to hold her stuffed animals?

Nancybee - that is actually a great idea! I can probably try to do a pulley system for it and look for an umbrella similar in color to the one in the canvas. Maybe I can even edge it in glitter like the painting's.

FYI in most of FL, concrete block exerior walls and concrete piers is the norm. You really don't see those telephone pole looking wood stilt structures. Those are older homes mostly or on islands where they can't transport concrete blocks...I really only see those stilt homes on wood pilings on TV so they must be common somewhere. For the concrete block structures...They looks like a standard 2 story from the road. To handle potential flooding, you have breakaway walls on the lower level if in a V zone(the beach, usually and the open bays). When the walls break away, the structure is held up by concrete piers that stay. Waterfront areas that are not V zone(often rivers and canals and creeks and some bays)...you can have concete block walls with open holes at the bottom 12" of the wall. There is a FEMA calculation of how many sq inch of open holes you have per sq foot of exterior wall. They are called flow through vents. They are designed to allow the flood waters to flow into the stucture and out of the structure without putting too much water force on the exterior walls. Break away walls are similar...but instead of allowing water the flow through those vents...the entire wall is designed to break away given the force of the water. I have one of these encluded structures directly on the water and flood insurance is approx $250/year. You cannot tell that it is a elevated home from seeing it from the outside. It looks like a typical 2 story home.

Thanks everyone for your input! I think I will do the following this spring: -Install a paving stone border -Plant something bigger in the planter ? Armeria I will ask local landscape for recommendations -Update mailbox/House number with a pop of color: there were a lot of comments about the mailbox but since this is a beach house, we barely get any mail! Maybe 1x month -FIND driftwood to make the pile bigger…did you know driftwood sells for $250 for a two foot piece! I hope to share and updated photo. Also, stayed tuned for photos of the interior! In the future: Painting the trim…my contractor/handyman/painter aka DAD just repainted the white…so we won't be touching that for a few years. Plant hydrangea bushes or, various plants on the whole front year, or replace the small planter with two larger Dig Doug: I love your renderings, especially the trellis! Additional comments: House is in Lavallette (good eye Dig Doug!) Won't widen the boardwalk…it would expand into the driveway Won't paint or stain the shingles…too much upkeep. Yes, the front room is a porch. The "real" front door is inside there. Creating a patio/porch: I like the idea and the look but the front room is a porch and we have outdoor seating out back. Town rule we cannot pave (or paving stone) the whole yard=drainage issues during storms Not sure about termites…will look into this. Thank you for the warning!

Are you going with a coastal theme as the bed cover is coastal. As you don’t want to paint the furniture I would paint the walls. I think a coral would be nice. Would the settee fit in the space where you have the dresser now as I would switch out those two items. I don’t think you need the white bench. A nice room size rug and some art work and a plant would pull the room together.

I love the look of your home to be! I hope you post pictures as your build progresses. Here's a link to another home that I think is by the same builder I posted above; I'm including it for the shingle style (I think?) and some of the features like the cupola and exterior details. I walked through this house several years ago; some things seemed impractical but I like the octagonal dining space and the exterior (although some might say it's too busy) and love the landscaping. The link is to a listing that's 4+ years old, but still has pictures up.

I'm glad you like the idea, binsd. The pulley thing would be cool.

My other thought was using sandpails to store small stuff in-

I love the painting (I have some by the same artist in my daughter's room). I also thought of sand pails. Surfboards also come to mind.

Such a cute idea!

Homegoods has a lot of beachy stuff right now--maybe see if anything there gives you more ideas.

Thanks for all the ideas!

I haven't done much with DD's/guest room because we just came out of a challenging escrow on this house. We closed this past Monday so you can imagine how my creative juices are just flowing!

As soon as I can, I'll stop in at Home Goods. BTW - I actually first saw that painting at a Home Goods. Y'all are right - lots of good beachy ideas there!

I would be nervous about a pulley system in such a small child's room. I like the idea of incorporating a beach umbrella though.

When I read "broadwalk" I thought wains cotting. Framed out chunky it could be her headboard, but along the window wall could be nice too.
