Granite Island Overhang - Non-Standard Shape
Comments (36)It seems that you've found a cool solution here without posts. In case anyone else is looking at this, our island is 8' long and we have a 14" overhang. We have posts supporting each corner which are quite substantial in size and fastened to the floor. I love having the aprons as well but be careful when you decide to go that route since it will inhibit the amount of room people have for their lap space when sitting at it. In our case, we only did an Apron around the sides. If you want an apron where people sit, you would either need to raise the island or somehow make the stools a bit shorter. Here is a pic of ours when the counters were being installed. Since our posts are hollow, we had power run up into them through the floor with outlets inserted and facing inwards towards the stools on each side. They are totally hidden yet really accessible! Btw, a longer overhang is totally worth it and makes sitting at the island WAY more comfortable! Comments (18)Now, ask if someone used to have 12" but now has 15"... If you don't have anything to compare with, it will seem fine... But, we have friends w/a 12" overhang (counter-height) and I find it uncomfortable to sit at. My DH won't sit at it at all b/c it's too little. I'm 5'10" and DH is 6'5"....but my DD is 5'11" & DS is approaching 6'6". So, I wholeheartedly agree w/the National Kitchen & Bath Association's (NKBA) recommendation of minimum overhangs... Table-height (30"): 18" Counter-height (36"): 15" Bar-height (42"): 12" I have found the NKBA minimum recommendations for various things to either be right on or too little, but never too much. Comments (15)It's going to be hard to get the required receptacle(s) in there - I'm not up on latest code, you might need 2 b/c of the size of the island. Used to be no more than 12" below the countertop with no more than 6" overhang. Of course, the higher the receptacle and the less the overhang the safer and more convenient it is to use. No face-up receptacles (I'm not sure how Sill-lites qualify - are they pop-up?) on the countertop. Edit: Sorry, just saw you said 12" overhang on 2 sides. If you can cut the pantry side down to 6" you could put one there. I originally thought you had drawers on that side too but now I can see blue so that's all open. If you don't actually need seating (knee room) there that would be perfect solution, I'd run Plugmold the whole length and you can use that side for buffet serving (though personally I don't like cords hanging over the edge of counter, if they were close and you secured the excess with a rubberband or twist tie it would do. AFAIK, once you have the required receptacle(s) (check if it's 1 or 2 for that size), you may have as many other receptacles as you want in the island. I have 1 (that serves as junction box for my Plugmold) at regular "wall height" on the pony wall that my countertop extends over for seating, I don't use that for small appliances but do find it convenient when vacuuming. Comments (13)I know this is not going to help the original questioner posted in 2007 and I sure wish I had found this question back then... But for those of you looking for "THE" answer... hear you go. The Amastin Company, Corryton TN, has been providing steel support bars in supporting hard surface counters to the East TN market since 1995. In this particular case, which is a common one, Amastin offers a 31" long x 2-1/2" wide x 1/2" thick steel support bar that would bump and mount into the back of the front face frame, notch and recess flush across the back cabinet mounting strip. This support would overhang 8" leaving it approx 4" from the counter edge making it virtually hidden. Amastin has the overhang support thing figured out and if you have any questions or in need of custom support advise... Amastin is place to find the answers.
