Installation Costs? Ikea

I have drawn up a nice little kitchen for my Mom & Dad's (elderly folks) house using the Ikea software. (I'd post it if I could figure out how to do that from the Ikea software.)

They need the old beaten down kitchen removed, including an very yucky broken down Roper stove (heavy and disgusting underneath) built in cabinets (too difficult for handicapped old folks to reach/use). They need the subfloor replaced due to water damage over the past 50 years as well. Then, new inexpensive floor (possible black VCT, Ikea cabinets assembled and installed, installation of a dishwasher & new stove, some new electrical outlets pulled, exhaust hole cut for fan. Probably a simple tile backsplash. The job includes five base cabinets and seven wall cabinets, ikea laminate counter top. Dad would buy the materials.

A very good friend has offered to do this work, what would be a reasonable hourly labor price to pay for his 'handy-man' work? He is very experienced, talented with plumbing, and only available due to the economy at this time.

We are in Illinois, Chicago suburb.

This is what the Ikea installers in Toronto charge:

Assemble and install cabinets
- $45.00 per linear foot

Haulout old kitchen
- $200.00

Install Dishwasher
- $150.00

Install sink
- $150.00

Install vent hood
- $ 50.00

Myself, for carpentry work I have paid $20.00/ hour cash (US), and let the carpenter decide whether or not he wants a 1099 for his taxes. I think in this economy with so many out of work, that's a pretty good wage. On the other hand, since my last guy was soooooooo sloooooow (see my post long ago) next person I hire will be by the job, not by the hour. But you say he's a friend, so I think $20.00 cash would be fine (depending on his skill--if he's not even close to a professional, maybe more like $15, because it will take longer?)

Hi Nora New, the kitchen planner that came out was Jenny I think and the contractor I ended up using was Michael Early construction. He is on houzz, just search under pros, you can see his previous projects. I'm not sure he's still a designated Ikea installer still, but I'm sure he can tell you. What I heard was that Ikea grossly underestimated the demand and that they were having major out of stock issues and therefore projects being delayed. Not sure what the situation is now. I also had good experience at the kitchen department in San Diego, they were really helpful. BUT this was my experience, I don't know anyone else personally who's gone through Ikea so I can only tell you my own experience. I have not used Ikea for bathrooms, my kitchen was the last project that I was dreading to start, I had already done bathrooms with other contractors. ikea installer vs. outside contractors, I think it's your personal choice. There are a few contractors that don't like to work on Ikea cabinets so I think you just have to do your research. I'm happy with the result. Feeling a bit frustrated. I went to IKEA to get some ideas for my workspace. I am converting two rooms in my house for an art studio. I was willing to pay them for concept drawings and installation and was told "We can install kitchen cabinets but no installation in any other type of room. If it doesn't have a sink and stove, we can't install it for you due to liability issues." Really? I would think there are more liability issues when there is a sink and stove. Just wanted someone to install what we purchased - willing to pay for installation. Disability limits what I can physically do and installation is definitely out of the question. Have others had the same issues with installation?

Here in LA Ikea is open for delivery. As are all my other suppliers because they fall into a category that is exempt here. Everyone should limit there exposure and exposure to others as much as possible but working alone or with one or two other people in my shop is a lot safer than going to a grocery store with dozens of people which is something we do every few days. Planing a kitchen or remodel doesn't effect anyone and saying prices are going to double is not fact based and others are saying the opposite. Nobody knows just like nobody knows when this will be over. As for your question demo depends on a lot of variables so couldn't say. Installation price is based off a plan but in general a small kitchen like that could be 2 k or less. i could give you the name of someone we have used (we make custom doors for Ikea) that was more reasonably priced than others. Without a plan to bid from dont know if they will quote a range.

I agree that using RTA cabinets makes no sense if one is having a GC do your kitchen. As I posted, the savings for RTA is when a homeowner is doing the assembly since they are saving on labor costs. If your GC is assembling them you are paying a lot of money for that and you would be better off purchasing a better middle of the road cabinet line, In my experience, the factor that drives up remodeing costs especially in a high cost of living area like New York City area is LABOR. With a small kitchen or bathroom the cost of the materials is less significant and is one of the positive aspects of having a small space - one can splurge on higher end finishes because the incremental cost is relatively insignificant and labor is more or less the same for nicer or even luxury finishes. I realized this when I priced out tile and the cost between the tile I loved and the tile that would have been a compromise was minimal and the cost of labor remained constant. Also as I posted the cost for doing a small kitchen in a multi-family condo is going to be vastly more expensive than doing the identical kitchen in a single family home even in the same area because there are all kinds of costs that are added. Not to mention that many GC will not work in a condo/coop although there are probably more with that kind of experience in a place like NYC where there are more multi-family condos.

lauren - i'm in Minneapolis and am having a general contractor install an ikea kitchen (not an ikea installer) he charges $65/hr and is planning on 12 hours or so to install 21 cabs (we're doing the demo and assembly). Flooring is hardwood naildown $500. Plumbing is around $75/hour for 3 hours to install sink and new install of dishwasher. Electricity is by the item done, not hourly, so wouldn't help you. I would imagine our rates are similar, since we're both midwestern metro areas.

In S. Ca, my handyman is excellent with wood but a little slow. He charges $12.00 an hour. My plumber is $85 an hour and my electrician is $45 an hour and/or $65 per recessed light, including the light fixture. On large jobs, I prefer that they bid the job and not the hourly rate.

My opinion: hire someone experienced in Ikea cabinets, OR put them together yourself. In our last kitchen, I put all the cabs together with the help of a young friend/kid we paid like $10/hour (but I was right there with him.) The carpenters hung the boxes. Since they'd never worked with Ikea cabinets before, they did not use the Ikea wall hardware, and they swore and cursed over the (foreign to them) legs and toekicks. Ikea cabinets are different from standard ones, and these guys didn't take the time to read the directions and do it right. So they just screwed the boxes to the walls. Thanks goodness I put the boxes together, they probably would have just screwed those too!!!

I think it would be worth your while to find an experienced installer who knows Ikea cabs. Especially if you choose not to put them together yourself. But it's kind of fun, actually!! get 2 or three friends and a couple bottles of wine and make a party of it!

You should be able to get recommendations for installers from your local Ikea. Or search "Ikea" in the labor section of craigslist.

Yes, it's very important that the cabinets be installed properly, for their stability, and ikea cabinets are definitely not meant to be installed like other cabinets. It's not a terribly hard job to do them yourself, if you're handy and have the time, but if you don't want to do it, make sure you get someone who's familiar with ikea.

me again! I definitely agree with staceyneil! The GC I'm using has experience with ikea kitchens - he and his design partner actually talked a friend of mine INTO using them (she was planning on something a little more spendy). I find his rates reasonable, and will LOVE having someone else (with tools) do the trim work, heavy lifting, leveling and fiddling with hinges.

We are doing the assembly ourselves, which he is fine with, but he did mention to be sure, sure, sure that the boxes are square when we nail on the backs.

Thank your lucky stars you are in chicago and not nyc.
Here everything is a fortune and the kitchen installers are rotten. It is one reason everything is expensive,

Thanks for all these good responses!

We want to do Ikea for price of course, but also because my brother installed one of the first Ikea kitchen when they arrived in the US (about 20 years ago?) and its still looking/functioning great. Actually, the assembly and installation of the ikea is the one thing we might do ourselves whereas its the rest of the work we definitely need help with. I think brother can help assemble them, and friend would do the gutting/installation/electrical/plumbing/flooring.

Really appreciate any and all input!
